Capture a CSS gradient after its element has reached its final size and rendering state. For a one-off image, inspect the gradient in Chrome DevTools and use the node, viewport, or full-page screenshot command. For repeatable captures, fix the viewport and device scale in Playwright, wait for fonts and application content, then screenshot the element with scale: "css". The gradient itself is not an image file: it is a browser-generated <image> value whose geometry is calculated from the element’s box.

Why CSS gradients change in screenshots

A CSS gradient has no intrinsic width or height. The browser paints it into the box created by the element, so changing that box changes the location of color stops and the apparent shape of the gradient. Viewport width, responsive breakpoints, zoom, writing mode, device scale, and late-loading fonts can all change the box before capture.

Linear gradients

linear-gradient() interpolates colors along an axis. Its angle and the element’s dimensions determine where that axis intersects the box. A narrow responsive card and a wide desktop card can therefore show noticeably different transitions even when their CSS declaration is identical.

Radial gradients

radial-gradient() radiates from an origin. The shape can be circular or elliptical; an ellipse commonly follows the element’s aspect ratio. If the element becomes wider or taller, the apparent center, radius, and stretching change.

Multiple background layers

background-image can contain several comma-separated images, including multiple gradients. The first listed layer is painted above later layers. Inspect the complete list rather than assuming the visible color comes from the first gradient declaration you find.

Choose the capture scope and output

Goal Capture Important setting
Check one gradient component Selected element Record its rendered width and height first
Show the design in a browser window Viewport Fix viewport dimensions and zoom
Document an entire page Full page Wait for lazy content and page layout to settle
Compare pixels in tests Element or full page Use CSS-pixel scale and a pinned environment
Inspect loading progression Network-panel screenshots Enable Capture screenshots, reload, and review timeline thumbnails

Use PNG when you need lossless pixel inspection. JPEG can be smaller, but its lossy compression may add banding around smooth color transitions. WebP is an option when your workflow accepts its encoding behavior; validate the result before using it for strict comparisons.

Manual capture in Chrome DevTools

  1. Let the page settle. Open the page in Chrome and wait for web fonts, images, JavaScript layout, and the gradient’s container to finish changing. If the application exposes a ready state, wait for that state rather than relying only on a timer.
  2. Select the painted element. Open DevTools, choose the Elements panel, and select the node that owns the gradient. It may be a child overlay, a pseudo-element, or a parent with several background layers.
  3. Inspect computed styles. In the Computed pane, record background, background-image, background-size, background-position, background-repeat, and background-clip. Expand comma-separated values so you can identify every layer and its stacking order.
  4. Record the rendered box. Note the element’s actual width and height in the layout overlay or box model. Also record viewport size, browser zoom, and device scale. These values explain most apparent changes in a gradient’s direction or color-stop placement.
  5. Capture the required scope. Use the DevTools command menu’s screenshot actions for the selected node, the current viewport, or the full page. A node capture is best when surrounding content would obscure the gradient; a full-page capture is appropriate for documentation.
  6. Capture loading stages deliberately. To document progressive rendering, open Network panel settings, enable Capture screenshots, reload, and inspect the thumbnails tied to points on the loading timeline. This is different from a final-state screenshot and should not be used accidentally for visual regression baselines.
  7. Save and verify. Prefer PNG for inspection. Open the file at 100% and check the gradient’s edges, transparency, and any smooth transitions for compression artifacts or premature capture.

Repeatable captures with Playwright

Playwright can capture an element, the viewport, or the full scrollable page. The following example fixes a 1440×900 CSS viewport, uses one device pixel per CSS pixel, waits for network activity and fonts, and captures only the element with class gradient.

import { chromium } from 'playwright';

const browser = await chromium.launch();
const page = await browser.newPage({
  viewport: { width: 1440, height: 900 },
  deviceScaleFactor: 1
});

await page.goto('https://example.com', { waitUntil: 'networkidle' });
await page.evaluate(() => document.fonts.ready);

await page.locator('.gradient').screenshot({
  path: 'gradient.png',
  scale: 'css'
});

await browser.close();

Replace the URL and selector with your page. If your application changes after network idle, add an application-specific readiness check, such as waiting for a stable selector or a completed data request.

Element, viewport, and full-page examples

For the current viewport:

await page.screenshot({ path: 'viewport.png', scale: 'css' });

For the full scrollable page:

await page.screenshot({
  path: 'page.png',
  fullPage: true,
  scale: 'css'
});

scale: "css" produces one output pixel per CSS pixel, which is usually the clearest baseline for layout comparisons. scale: "device" uses device pixels and creates a higher-resolution file on high-density settings; do not mix the two scales in a pixel-diff suite.

Make the baseline deterministic

  • Pin the browser version, operating-system image, viewport, device scale, zoom, and color-related settings used by the test runner.
  • Disable animations and transitions, or wait until they complete. A gradient animated with CSS is never a stable baseline at an arbitrary instant.
  • Inject a stylesheet or use Playwright’s screenshot style option to hide clocks, rotating banners, cursors, chat launchers, and other volatile regions.
  • Wait for document.fonts.ready and for images or lazy content that can alter the gradient element’s dimensions.
  • Keep headless and headed runs consistent. Browser mode, hardware, power state, and operating-system rendering can produce small differences.
  • Use the same output format and scaling rule for every comparison. A change from PNG to JPEG can look like a CSS regression when it is only compression.

Controlling transparency and layers

A gradient may be painted over a transparent element or over another background. Check the final composited appearance, not just the declaration. If you need transparent output, verify that the capture method and format preserve alpha. Playwright’s omitBackground option is not available for JPEG, so choose a format that supports transparency when alpha is required. Also inspect pseudo-elements such as ::before and ::after; the selected DOM node may not itself contain the visible gradient.

Why screenshots differ and how to fix them

The direction or color-stop positions changed

Compare the captured element’s width, height, writing mode, viewport, zoom, and device scale with the reference. Linear-gradient geometry is computed from the box and angle, so a responsive resize alone can move the apparent transition.

A radial gradient looks stretched

Check whether the source uses an ellipse or an explicit circle. Confirm the element dimensions and the gradient’s size keywords. An elliptical gradient can legitimately follow a changing aspect ratio; it is not necessarily a screenshot defect.

A gradient layer is missing

Inspect the entire comma-separated background-image value and the order of layers. A later declaration can replace an earlier one, while the first image in a valid list is painted above the following images. Check background-clip and opacity as well.

The capture was taken too early

Wait for navigation, fonts, images, and application-specific readiness. For an intentional loading study, use Network-panel capture screenshots instead of pretending a loading frame is the final page.

Pixel diffs are noisy

Use CSS-pixel scale, disable animations, hide volatile regions, and run the same browser and operating-system baseline. Small differences can come from browser updates, hardware acceleration, power state, or headless mode rather than from the gradient CSS.

Transparency is wrong

Confirm the requested format supports alpha and that the capture API is not supplying an opaque default background. Do not use JPEG when transparent output is part of the requirement.

Performance, reliability, and cost considerations

Element screenshots are generally cheaper to process and easier to compare than full-page captures because they contain fewer pixels. Full-page captures can trigger lazy-loaded images and long layouts, so allow more time and memory. A CSS-pixel baseline reduces file size and avoids needless device-pixel multiplication; use device scale only when the consuming workflow needs high-density output.

For reliable automation, treat readiness as a condition, not a fixed delay. Wait for the selector that proves the gradient exists, for fonts to be ready, and for any data that controls the element’s dimensions. Cache or reuse browser setup in a test worker when appropriate, but isolate tests that mutate global styles. Keep failure artifacts—HTML, console output, and a screenshot—so a mismatch can be diagnosed as timing, geometry, layering, or rendering-environment drift.

const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
if (!res.ok) throw new Error(`HTTP ${res.status}`);
const data = Buffer.from(await res.arrayBuffer());
await import('node:fs/promises').then(fs => fs.writeFile('shot.webp', data));

For a gradient workflow, relevant options include full-page capture with lazy images loaded, a CSS-selector element capture, dark mode, device presets or a custom viewport, retina scale, custom CSS and JavaScript, click-before-capture, selector waits, delay or network-idle waits, hidden selectors, blocked ads or resource types, custom headers, cookies, user agent, authorization, timezone, geolocation, transparent backgrounds, image resizing, and a user-selected cache TTL. You can also submit asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, capture up to 100 URLs per bulk call, use signed links for public <img> tags, query usage, and download the OpenAPI specification. Parameter names used by other screenshot APIs also work, which can simplify migration.

FAQ

Should I screenshot the gradient element or the whole page?

Capture the element when you are validating its pixels or geometry; capture the full page when surrounding layout and scroll position are part of the evidence.

Which scale should a visual regression test use?

Use scale: "css" for a one-pixel-per-CSS-pixel baseline, and keep that choice fixed across runs. Choose device scale only when the expected artifact is specifically a high-density image.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can a screenshot prove that the CSS declaration is correct?

No. It records the rendered result under one viewport, browser, environment, and time. Inspect computed styles and the rendered box alongside the image when diagnosing a mismatch.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I capture only a CSS gradient without surrounding content?

Use Playwright’s locator screenshot for the gradient element, or select the node in Chrome DevTools and run the selected-node screenshot command.

Why does the same gradient look different on two machines?

Browser and operating-system rendering, viewport geometry, fonts, device scale, hardware, power state, and headless mode can differ; pin those conditions for comparisons.
