Use Chrome DevTools for agents, the official Chrome DevTools MCP server, to navigate and capture a live Chrome page through an MCP client. Install Node.js LTS and current stable Chrome, configure the client to launch chrome-devtools-mcp, then ask the agent to open the target URL and take a screenshot. The MCP server is the browser integration; the underlying Chrome DevTools Protocol includes the Page.captureScreenshot command.
What Chrome DevTools MCP does—and what it does not
Chrome DevTools for agents connects an MCP-compatible AI client to a live Chrome browser so the agent can navigate, inspect, debug, and interact with pages. The project is distributed as the chrome-devtools-mcp npm package. Screenshot capture is one capability among the browser tools it exposes.
At the protocol level, Chrome DevTools Protocol’s Page domain defines Page.captureScreenshot, which captures an image and accepts a clip describing a region. That protocol command is not the MCP setup command or necessarily the tool name an agent calls: the MCP server mediates between the client and Chrome. Use the current MCP tool reference linked from the project page for exact tool names and arguments.

The official documentation establishes screenshot capability, but the details reviewed here do not establish the exact current MCP screenshot argument schema or guarantee that a particular tool captures an entire page. Confirm the available options in your installed server’s current tool reference before relying on full-page output or other specialized behavior.

Requirements and compatibility
- Node.js LTS and npm: the server runs as an npm package, commonly launched with
npx. - Current stable Google Chrome: Chrome DevTools for agents lists Chrome as a prerequisite.
- An MCP-compatible client: configure it to launch the server and use its browser tools.
The project officially supports Google Chrome and Chrome for Testing. Other Chromium-based browsers are not guaranteed; compatibility and behavior may differ. Package versions, client setup commands, and options can change, so check the official setup guide and repository when adapting these instructions.
Configure an MCP client to launch Chrome DevTools MCP
The project’s generic configuration uses the command npx with arguments -y and chrome-devtools-mcp@latest. In a client that accepts a JSON MCP server configuration, the essential entry is:
{
"mcpServers": {
"chrome-devtools": {
"command": "npx",
"args": ["-y", "chrome-devtools-mcp@latest"]
}
}
}
Client configuration formats and file locations vary. Use your client’s current MCP settings and follow its documentation rather than assuming this JSON can be pasted unchanged into every application. The official Chrome guide also gives a Codex example:
codex mcp add chrome-devtools -- npx chrome-devtools-mcp@latest
After adding the server, restart or refresh the client if its setup process requires it, then check that the Chrome DevTools tools are available. The browser may not start merely because the MCP server connected; the project notes that Chrome starts when the client uses a tool that requires the browser.
Capture a page screenshot
- Prepare the page URL. Choose the exact public page and state whether you need a particular viewport, page state, or output format.
- Connect the MCP server. Start your MCP client with the
chrome-devtoolsserver configured. Confirm the client exposes the server’s browser tools. - Ask the agent to navigate and capture. For example: “Open https://example.com in Chrome, wait until the page is ready, then capture a PNG screenshot of the visible viewport.” The agent should use the navigation and screenshot tools exposed by the installed server. The exact tool-call schema depends on the version and client, so do not copy guessed argument names into an API call.
- Check the result. Verify the returned image, viewport dimensions, and whether the capture contains the content you intended. If the page loads dynamically, ask the agent to wait for a relevant selector or for a suitable delay before capturing, if the installed tool surface supports that option.
This is a natural-language MCP workflow, not a portable command-line screenshot script: the actual tool calls are made by the MCP client. For direct protocol work, Page.captureScreenshot is the Chrome DevTools Protocol command, and its clip field describes a capture region. Consult the live protocol and MCP documentation for exact parameters and behavior.

Choose browser mode, viewport, and image format
The project’s configuration guide documents options that affect the capture. Set them deliberately when consistent results matter.
Headless or visible Chrome
Headless mode runs Chrome without showing its normal window, which suits background automation. A visible browser is useful when you need to observe the session or debug what the agent is doing. Use the mode supported by your current server configuration and client.
Viewport dimensions
Set the initial viewport to the dimensions your use case expects. Responsive pages can change layout at different widths, so a screenshot taken at one viewport is not interchangeable with one taken at another. For reproducibility, keep the viewport fixed across runs and record it alongside the image when comparing captures.
PNG, JPEG, or WebP
| Format | When to choose it | Documented behavior |
|---|---|---|
| PNG | When you want lossless capture and are willing to accept larger files. | The configuration guide lists PNG as the default; its quality setting does not affect PNG. |
| JPEG | When a smaller image is more useful than lossless output. | Quality can be set. The project’s configuration documentation describes JPEG and WebP as approximately 3–5 times smaller than PNG; this is the documentation’s approximate comparison, not a universal size guarantee or independent benchmark. |
| WebP | When you need a compact image and your downstream tools accept WebP. | Quality can be set. The same documentation gives the approximate 3–5-times-smaller comparison noted above. |
The configuration guide also describes maximum dimensions that downscale output. Downscaling can reduce image size, but it changes the pixel dimensions of the delivered capture. PNG remains lossless at the resulting dimensions; JPEG and WebP quality settings apply to those formats.
Options for narrower browser tasks
Use the slim tool surface for basic work
The project documents a --slim option that exposes navigation, script execution, and screenshots for basic browser tasks. It can be a better fit when you need a smaller set of actions than the broader browser-inspection tool surface. Check the current configuration guide for syntax and exact scope.

Choose whether the browser profile persists
The configuration includes an option for an isolated temporary user-data directory. A fresh isolated profile is useful for public-page captures because it separates the task from your ordinary browser state. A persistent profile may be needed when a task depends on saved browser state, but it can also contain cookies or signed-in sessions. Choose based on the task and security boundary; do not assume either profile behavior without checking the current configuration.

The server documents allowed-URL and blocked-URL patterns. They can help constrain intended browsing, but the security documentation explicitly says these are not a complete network sandbox. If you need to enforce a network boundary, use a separate operating-system or virtual-machine sandbox.
Privacy and security before connecting an agent
Chrome DevTools for agents can expose page content and allow browser actions. The Chrome guide warns that an agent can read, inspect, debug, and modify browser or DevTools data; an authenticated browser session can let it act on your behalf. Use a clean or isolated profile for public-page screenshots, and do not connect a session containing credentials, private communications, or sensitive account data unless the agent is trusted and that access is necessary.
Web pages can contain content intended to manipulate an AI agent. The project security document recommends trusted web content or client precautions against prompt injection. Treat page text and instructions as untrusted input, especially when the browser session has access to accounts or tools.
The project’s repository says usage statistics are enabled by default. To disable them, use --no-usage-statistics. It also says collection is disabled when the CHROME_DEVTOOLS_MCP_NO_USAGE_STATISTICS environment variable or CI is set. Review the current project documentation for the precise behavior of the version you install.

Troubleshooting common setup and capture problems
The MCP client cannot start the server
- Confirm Node.js and npm are installed and available in the environment where the client launches MCP servers.
- Check that the command is
npxand the arguments include-yandchrome-devtools-mcp@latest, or use the client-specific setup from the official guide. - Review the client’s server logs for package download, execution, or configuration errors; client configuration paths and syntax are not universal.
The server connects, but no browser opens
Connecting does not necessarily start Chrome. Invoke a browser tool that requires it, and verify that supported Google Chrome or Chrome for Testing is installed and available to the server.
The screenshot is the wrong size or layout
Set the initial viewport explicitly and capture again. Responsive layouts vary with viewport dimensions; maximum-dimension settings can also downscale the output. Check both the configured viewport and the returned image dimensions.
The page is incomplete or still loading
Wait for the page’s relevant content rather than assuming navigation completion means every element has rendered. If supported by the installed tool surface, wait for a selector or delay before capture. Dynamic pages, lazy content, and network conditions can change what appears at capture time.
The screenshot does not include the whole page
Do not assume that the MCP screenshot tool’s default is full-page capture. The protocol reference establishes a screenshot command and a region-clipping parameter, but the reviewed documentation does not establish the MCP tool’s full-page behavior. Check the current tool reference for an explicit full-page option before relying on it.
The browser or agent can access too much
Disconnect sensitive sessions, use an isolated profile, and constrain destinations where appropriate. URL allow/block patterns are not a network sandbox; enforce stronger isolation outside the MCP server if the task requires it.

Performance, reliability, and cost considerations
The documented format-size trade-off is practical: PNG favors lossless output, while JPEG or WebP may reduce transfer and storage size. The project’s approximate 3–5-times-smaller statement is not a guarantee for a particular page or image. Maximum-dimension settings can further reduce output resolution.
For repeatable captures, control viewport, browser mode, format, and page readiness, and use the same profile strategy each time. A dynamic page or transient network condition may still produce different content. The sources cited here do not establish capture latency, uptime, success rates, or a price for using this MCP package; do not treat those as fixed performance or cost figures.
Or skip the browser setup
If your goal is to get a website screenshot rather than have an agent operate Chrome, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. One GET request can return a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. It accepts cookie and consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each of those steps can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, with page verdict and billing information in response headers. Its MCP server offers take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. All features are on every plan; the free plan includes 1,000 shots a month without a card, and paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. See the ScreenshotNeo documentation.
