On Windows, Python can inspect browser content through Microsoft UI Automation (UIA), using pywin32 to connect to Windows APIs and COM. This can retrieve accessible text from a browser window, but it is not a general-purpose way to read the full page DOM. The right method depends on whether you need visible, accessible content from a standalone browser or complete page data from a browser instance you control.

What pywin32 can—and cannot—read from a browser

Microsoft describes UI Automation as a Windows accessibility framework. A UIA client can find interface elements in other applications, inspect their properties and supported control patterns, and interact with them. A browser exposes some of its user interface and page content through an accessibility tree.

pywin32 provides Python extensions for Windows APIs, including COM support. It is the bridge into Windows integration; it does not provide a universal browser-DOM interface. When UIA exposes a page element, a Python client may be able to read its accessible name, value, or text pattern. It cannot be assumed to expose every HTML node, script-generated value, hidden element, or shadow-DOM node. The result is accessible browser content, not a complete DOM dump. See Microsoft’s UI Automation overview and UI Automation model documentation.

Choose the capture method for the content you need

Need Best fit Important limit
Accessible text in a standalone browser window UI Automation, with Python access to Windows APIs Only information exposed by the browser’s accessibility provider is available.
Full DOM, JavaScript state, or predictable page extraction A browser automation or debugging interface on a browser instance you control UIA is not a substitute for DOM/script access.
Capture from an Edge WebView2 embedded in an application you own WebView2 APIs or its supported debugging integration The embedded control is not necessarily a standalone browser window.
A rendered screenshot or PDF without setting up browser automation ScreenshotNeo It captures page output; it does not turn UIA into a DOM-reading API.

Prepare Windows and the browser

Use a Windows environment with the target browser installed and accessible to the Python process. The browser must expose the information you want through its accessibility provider. Browser version, page structure, permissions, and provider behavior can all change what appears in the UIA tree.

#1 Best Overall

Chromium-based browsers have moved toward native Windows UIA. Google announced that, beginning with Chrome 138, Chromium-based browsers on Windows enable native UIA support by default. This removes an older translation layer, but it does not guarantee that every page node or value will be present. The milestone is documented in Google Chrome Developers’ UIA update, dated 2025-08-14.

Install pywin32 in the Python environment that will run the script:

py -m pip install pywin32

pywin32’s COM quick start demonstrates creating registered COM objects with win32com.client.Dispatch and describes makepy for generated static type support. Those capabilities are useful for COM automation, but UI Automation clients still need to connect to the relevant UIA interfaces and patterns. Read the pywin32 COM quick-start documentation for its COM-specific setup and usage.

Build a UIA capture workflow

  1. Start or identify the browser. For repeatability, start a controlled browser instance where practical. Otherwise identify the correct top-level window using a process, window title, or handle. A title alone may be ambiguous when several tabs or windows are open.
  2. Get the UIA root for that window. Use a Windows UI Automation client to obtain the root element corresponding to the browser window, rather than walking unrelated desktop windows.
  3. Traverse descendants. Inspect elements’ control types and properties. Look for supported text-related patterns as well as names and values; different controls expose different information.
  4. Collect selectively. Keep relevant accessible text and attributes, and retain enough context to associate text with its control or location. Avoid treating every descendant as page content: browser chrome, tabs, menus, and toolbars can also be in the tree.
  5. Handle change and absence. Pages load asynchronously, tabs switch, and virtualized content may only exist in the tree when brought into view. Use bounded waits, check the selected window and foreground state when relevant, and log which elements and patterns were found.

Microsoft documents the UIA tree, properties, and control patterns, but does not promise a stable mapping from every browser DOM node to an accessible element. Treat missing text as a limit of the exposed accessibility data unless you have verified another cause.

Account for tabs, loading, and foreground state

Finding the intended page

A top-level browser window is not always enough to identify a tab. Window titles can change as navigation completes, multiple windows may share similar titles, and the active tab can change while capture is running. If the content must come from the active tab, verify the target browser window and tab state immediately before traversal and avoid switching focus during the capture.

Waiting for content

A fixed delay can help with a known, controlled page, but it is not proof that loading has finished. A better UIA workflow uses a timeout and checks for a page-specific accessible element or expected text. If the browser tree is still changing, retry a bounded number of times, then return a clear timeout or incomplete-capture result rather than silently saving partial text.

Virtualized and inaccessible content

Long lists, feeds, and other virtualized interfaces may expose only currently rendered or visible items. Some content may lack useful accessible names or text patterns. Scrolling can cause additional items to enter the accessibility tree, but it also changes the page state and still does not guarantee full coverage. If complete page data is mandatory, switch to a DOM-capable method rather than assuming UIA traversal has found everything.

When an embedded WebView2 changes the approach

An Edge WebView2 control inside a Windows application is different from a standalone Edge window. Attaching to a browser window may target the wrong object or find no suitable top-level browser at all. Microsoft documents WebView2 APIs for script execution, web messaging, downloads, image capture, and other browser functions. For Win32/C++ apps, WebView2 appears in the accessibility tree as a child of its parent HWND by default. If you control the host application, direct WebView2 APIs or its debugging integration can be more deterministic than scraping rendered UI through UIA. See Microsoft’s WebView2 documentation.

Use ScreenshotNeo when the goal is an image or PDF

If you need a rendered screenshot or PDF rather than accessible text, a screenshot API avoids attaching Python to a local browser window. ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. Its clean-shot workflow accepts cookie or consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Only clean shots are billed: bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, with the page verdict and billing status reported in response headers. Its MCP server offers take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.

Here is a one-request cURL example, using the API’s documented endpoint and parameters. Replace the example URL with the page you want and use your API key. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for available options.

Troubleshoot common capture problems

  • The browser window cannot be found: Confirm the browser process is running in the same Windows session and under an accessible user context. Match by a more specific process, handle, or current title rather than assuming a fixed title.
  • The UIA tree contains browser controls but no page text: Check that the target window and tab are correct and that the page has loaded. Then inspect descendants and supported text patterns. If the browser provider does not expose the needed content, UIA cannot recover it as DOM data.
  • Text is missing or duplicated: Browser chrome and page elements share the tree, while accessible names and text patterns may overlap. Filter by control type and expected context, and deduplicate only when the element identity and content justify it.
  • Capture returns partial content: Look for asynchronous loading, virtualized content, or a tab change. Wait for a known accessible marker with a timeout; if the requirement is complete page extraction, use an approach with DOM access.
  • Results differ after a browser update: UIA tree details depend on browser version and provider behavior. Recheck the target window, element hierarchy, and patterns rather than relying on undocumented node positions.
  • A WebView2 host is not found as a browser: Locate the parent application window and use the host’s WebView2 integration where possible; the control is embedded and may be a child of the parent HWND.

FAQ

Can pywin32 read the active Chrome or Edge tab without Selenium?

It can help a Python program access Windows APIs, but the general inspection model is UI Automation. You can read what the browser exposes through its accessibility tree; pywin32 alone does not provide a universal tab DOM.

Does native UIA support in Chrome 138 mean every page is readable?

No. It establishes native UIA support as the default for Chromium-based browsers on Windows starting with that milestone, not guaranteed exposure of every page element or script value.

Should I use UI Automation or Microsoft Active Accessibility?

Microsoft’s Windows Automation overview covers both UIA and legacy Microsoft Active Accessibility. For new code, UIA is generally the target when the application exposes the information you need; keep a legacy fallback only when a target application requires it.
