To capture application traffic with Fiddler, run Fiddler on the device where the app runs, make the app use Fiddler’s HTTP proxy (or use a supported network-capturing mode), enable HTTPS decryption and trust Fiddler’s root certificate when payloads are encrypted, then start a clean capture immediately before reproducing the issue. Stop as soon as the operation finishes, inspect the sessions, and export the trace for analysis.

Fiddler is a local HTTP(S) debugging proxy. It can only see traffic that reaches its listener. An app that uses its own proxy settings, certificate pinning, a VPN tunnel, or a non-HTTP protocol may require a different capture arrangement.

Before you capture: choose the right Fiddler edition and device

Install Fiddler on the device used to reproduce the problem, as Microsoft’s guidance recommends. Fiddler Classic and Fiddler Everywhere differ in operating-system support, capture modes, certificate setup, and default ports.

Prepare a clean, reproducible capture

  1. Close unrelated traffic sources. Quit browsers, update clients, sync tools, chat applications, and other software that could add noise. Fiddler records all traffic sent through its proxy while capture is enabled.
  2. Start Fiddler and clear old sessions. In Fiddler Classic, use the session list’s remove command. In workflows that document the Power Query process, clear Capture Traffic during setup and press Ctrl+X to remove existing traces before reproducing.
  3. Confirm the listener. Note the local host address and port displayed in Fiddler. For a remote device, the device must be able to reach that address; do not use localhost on the remote client.
  4. Configure HTTPS before reproduction. Follow the edition-specific certificate steps below and verify that the certificate is trusted by the same user or application context that will make the request.
  5. Start capture immediately before the test. Perform one controlled reproduction, then stop capture immediately. A short trace is easier to interpret and safer to share.

Configure HTTPS decryption

Fiddler Classic

  1. Open Tools > Fiddler Options > HTTPS.
  2. Select Decrypt HTTPS Traffic.
  3. Accept the prompt to generate or install the Fiddler root certificate, and place it in the trusted root store when Windows asks.
  4. Restart the target application if it cached proxy or certificate state before Fiddler was configured.

Classic Fiddler’s HTTPS decryption is disabled by default. Without it, the list may contain a CONNECT tunnel but not the HTTPS URL, headers, or body inside that tunnel.

Fiddler Everywhere

  1. Open Settings > HTTPS.
  2. Install the Fiddler root CA and follow the platform’s trust prompt.
  3. On a remote client, export the CA and install it into that device’s trusted certificate store before expecting decrypted HTTPS.

Progress Telerik states that capturing and decrypting HTTPS requires installing and trusting the Fiddler root CA through the HTTPS settings. Trusting a certificate gives Fiddler the ability to intercept encrypted sessions, so use it only on devices and accounts you control. Remove the test trust when the diagnostic work is complete if the device is not dedicated to debugging.

Make the application use Fiddler

Applications that honor the system proxy

Many desktop applications read the operating system’s HTTP proxy settings. Set the system proxy to the Fiddler host and the port shown in Fiddler, then restart the app. Starting the app after Fiddler can matter when automatic proxy detection occurs only at launch.

Applications with explicit proxy settings

Enter Fiddler’s host and listener port in the application’s network or proxy preferences. If the app distinguishes HTTP and HTTPS proxy fields, use Fiddler for both unless its documentation specifies otherwise. Keep authentication settings consistent with the app’s proxy implementation.

Applications that do not use a proxy

If no sessions appear, the app may ignore system settings, use a separate networking stack, connect through a VPN, or use certificate pinning. Fiddler Everywhere’s Windows network-capturing mode can capture traffic below the ordinary proxy layer by using Windows Filtering Platform. Linux does not yet support that mode, so Linux users must arrange proxy capture and manual CA export/trust. On platforms without a lower-level mode, check the application’s own proxy flags, launch parameters, or developer configuration. A hard-coded proxy or pinned certificate may require a vendor-supported diagnostic build; do not disable security controls on production users’ devices.

Capture traffic from another device

  1. Run Fiddler on a computer reachable from the client device’s network.
  2. Enable remote-client access in the Fiddler edition’s connections or network settings.
  3. Record the Fiddler computer’s LAN IP address and the actual listening port. The legacy classic guidance commonly references port 8888; the current Fiddler Everywhere Windows quickstart lists 8866.
  4. On the client, set its HTTP and HTTPS proxy to the Fiddler computer’s IP address and port.
  5. Browse to Fiddler’s certificate-installation page or transfer the exported FiddlerRoot certificate, then install and trust it on the client. Mobile operating systems may require a separate user-certificate trust switch, and some applications intentionally reject user-installed CAs.
  6. Clear old sessions, enable capture, reproduce once, stop capture, and export the relevant sessions.

Firewalls must permit the client-to-Fiddler port, and both devices must be on a network where that route is allowed. Never expose a debugging proxy to an untrusted network.

Read and save the trace

For each request, inspect the URL, HTTP method, status code, request and response headers, timing, redirects, and response body where available. Correlate the first failing request with the application’s visible error and check whether the failure is DNS, connection, TLS, authentication, authorization, server response, or client-side parsing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • URLs and methods: confirm the app called the expected host and used GET, POST, PUT, or another method.
  • Status codes: distinguish authentication failures (often 401 or 403), missing resources (404), throttling (429), and server errors (5xx).
  • Headers: look for authorization, content type, cache directives, correlation IDs, and redirects. Remove secrets before sharing.
  • Timing: separate DNS, connect, TLS, request wait, and download delays when the UI hangs.
  • Payloads: compare the sent JSON, form data, or uploaded content with what the server expects. Treat bodies as potentially sensitive.

Save or export the session file after selecting only the relevant requests. Fiddler Everywhere supports saving, sharing, and exporting captured HTTPS sessions. Store traces with restricted access because cookies, bearer tokens, personal data, and passwords may appear in headers or bodies.

Why you see only CONNECT tunnels

HTTPS decryption is off

A CONNECT session establishes a tunnel to the TLS host; it does not reveal the encrypted HTTP exchange. Enable HTTPS decryption and install/trust the Fiddler root CA, then restart the app.

The certificate is not trusted by this app

The operating system may trust the CA while the app uses its own certificate store or rejects user CAs. Install the CA in the store used by that runtime, or use an approved diagnostic build that permits interception.

The app is not using Fiddler

Check the app’s explicit proxy settings, confirm the host and port, and start the app after configuring the proxy. If the app uses a VPN, QUIC, a custom socket protocol, or a pinned certificate, ordinary proxy capture may not work.

Troubleshooting checklist

Symptom Likely cause Fix
No sessions at all Capture is off, wrong listener, or app bypasses the proxy. Enable capture, verify the displayed port, restart the app, and configure its explicit proxy or a supported Windows network-capturing mode.
Only CONNECT entries HTTPS decryption or CA trust is missing. Enable decryption, install/trust FiddlerRoot, and restart the app.
Remote device cannot connect Wrong address, firewall, or remote access disabled. Use the Fiddler host’s LAN IP, enable remote clients, open the port only on the trusted network, and test reachability.
Browser works but app fails Different certificate store, proxy behavior, or certificate pinning. Inspect the app’s network settings and trust model; use its supported debug configuration.
Capture is noisy Other applications generated traffic. Close unrelated programs, clear sessions, and reproduce once.
TLS errors after setup CA is expired, installed in the wrong store, or interception conflicts with pinning. Regenerate/reinstall the CA, verify the application’s trust store, and do not bypass pinning in production.

Performance, reliability, and privacy considerations

A proxy adds a diagnostic hop and certificate interception, so compare timings with Fiddler disabled before treating a delay as server-side. Capture only the shortest reproduction: long recordings consume storage, obscure the relevant request, and increase the chance of collecting credentials. Use filters or selection to export only necessary sessions, redact authorization headers and cookies, and rotate or delete temporary certificates and archives according to your organization’s policy.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can Fiddler capture traffic from an app on another computer?

Yes. Enable remote-client access, point the other device at the Fiddler host’s LAN IP and displayed port, and install and trust FiddlerRoot on that device for HTTPS decryption.

Is Fiddler a packet sniffer for every protocol?

No. It is an HTTP(S) debugging proxy. Traffic that bypasses the proxy, uses unsupported protocols, or is protected by certificate pinning may not be visible.

Why should I restart the application after changing Fiddler settings?

Many applications read proxy and certificate settings only at startup, so restarting ensures the new configuration is used.
