The reliable method depends on the iframe’s origin. If the iframe and the modal page are same-origin, open the modal, wait for the frame to render, and pass the modal element to html2canvas. If the iframe is cross-origin or sandboxed without allow-same-origin, parent-page JavaScript cannot inspect or redraw its document; use cooperation from the iframe owner or an authorized browser-level capture such as Playwright.
Start with the same-origin check
Two pages are same-origin only when their scheme, host, and port match. A frame at https://app.example.test is same-origin with that exact origin, but not with a different host, scheme, or port. A sandboxed iframe without allow-same-origin is treated as having an opaque origin even when its URL appears familiar.
This distinction controls whether the parent can access iframe.contentDocument and whether a DOM-based library can include the frame. The html2canvas project documentation states that same-origin iframes are rendered recursively, while cross-origin frames cannot be rendered because contentDocument is inaccessible. No client-side library can bypass that browser security boundary.

Capture a same-origin iframe with html2canvas
1. Put the modal and iframe in the rendered document
The target must be visible when capture starts. Do not capture a hidden template with display:none; browsers have no layout to reproduce. Open the modal, set its final size, and wait for the iframe’s load event. If the frame itself loads data after that event, wait for an application-specific readiness signal as well.

2. Load the library
Install or load html2canvas using the version your application has approved. The API returns a promise that resolves to a canvas.
<script src="/vendor/html2canvas.min.js" defer></script>
3. Open, wait, render, and download
const modal = document.querySelector('#modal');
const frame = document.querySelector('#preview');
const open = document.querySelector('#open');
const close = document.querySelector('#close');
const save = document.querySelector('#save');
function waitForFrame(frame) {
return new Promise((resolve, reject) => {
const done = () => { cleanup(); resolve(); };
const fail = () => { cleanup(); reject(new Error('iframe failed to load')); };
const cleanup = () => {
frame.removeEventListener('load', done);
frame.removeEventListener('error', fail);
};
frame.addEventListener('load', done, { once: true });
frame.addEventListener('error', fail, { once: true });
// If it already loaded before the listener was attached:
if (frame.contentDocument?.readyState === 'complete') done();
});
}
open.addEventListener('click', async () => {
modal.hidden = false;
save.hidden = true;
try {
await waitForFrame(frame);
// Optional: wait for a known element inside a same-origin frame.
await new Promise(requestAnimationFrame);
const canvas = await html2canvas(modal, {
scale: window.devicePixelRatio,
backgroundColor: '#ffffff',
useCORS: true,
ignoreElements: element => element.matches('[data-capture-ignore]')
});
canvas.toBlob(blob => {
if (!blob) throw new Error('Canvas export failed');
const url = URL.createObjectURL(blob);
const link = document.createElement('a');
link.href = url;
link.download = 'modal-with-iframe.png';
link.click();
URL.revokeObjectURL(url);
}, 'image/png');
save.hidden = false;
} catch (error) {
console.error(error);
}
});
close.addEventListener('click', () => { modal.hidden = true; });
For an upload instead of a download, pass the blob to fetch or FormData. Use toDataURL() only when a data URL is specifically required; blobs generally use less memory for larger images.
Control the capture area and output quality
Choose the element
Capture the dialog wrapper rather than the entire page when you need only the modal. The selected element must contain the iframe and be attached to the document. An element’s scroll position and clipping affect what is reconstructed.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Scale for sharpness
The documented default scale is the device pixel ratio. Setting scale: window.devicePixelRatio usually preserves the apparent sharpness of the display. A larger scale increases canvas dimensions and memory use; it can trigger browser-dependent canvas limits. Test the largest modal and the lowest-memory target browser.
Crop or set dimensions
html2canvas supports explicit width and height, plus crop coordinates, when the modal’s layout includes extra whitespace or you need a fixed output rectangle. Measure after fonts, images, and the frame have finished loading.
Exclude controls
Use ignoreElements to omit close buttons, selection handles, or other UI that should not appear in the saved image. Add a stable attribute such as data-capture-ignore rather than relying on fragile generated class names.

Images and CORS
useCORS or a permitted proxy can help load certain cross-origin image resources. That solves image-resource loading and canvas tainting; it does not grant access to a cross-origin iframe document. The image server must send an appropriate CORS response, and credentials and cache behavior still apply.
Why html2canvas may not match what the user saw
html2canvas is a DOM reconstruction, not a native screenshot. Its documentation describes the result as a representation built from available DOM and CSS information and warns that it may not be 100% accurate. Unsupported CSS, browser-specific effects, fonts that have not loaded, video, canvas content, animations, fixed positioning, filters, and unusual stacking contexts can differ from the visible browser pixels.
- Wait for web fonts with
await document.fonts.readywhere supported. - Pause CSS animations and transitions before capture.
- Wait for images and application data, not merely the iframe’s initial load.
- Capture after the modal has reached its final dimensions.
- Compare output in every browser you support; large canvases have browser-dependent limits.
If pixel fidelity is a requirement, use a controlled browser screenshot instead of relying on DOM redraw.
Cross-origin frames: what you can and cannot do
Parent JavaScript cannot read the frame
Accessing iframe.contentDocument, querying inside it, or asking html2canvas to recurse into it fails when the frame is cross-origin. A proxy is not a general workaround: moving bytes through a server does not automatically make the live document same-origin, and bypassing an owner’s access controls may violate authorization or policy.
Build a cooperative integration
If both applications are yours, define an explicit protocol. The iframe can render its own content, create an approved image or structured representation, and send it to the parent with postMessage. Validate event.origin, restrict accepted message types, and never accept arbitrary capture commands from unknown origins.
// In the iframe, after its own content is ready:
window.parent.postMessage({ type: 'preview-ready', imageDataUrl }, 'https://app.example.test');
// In the parent:
window.addEventListener('message', event => {
if (event.origin !== 'https://preview.example.test') return;
if (event.data?.type !== 'preview-ready') return;
// Validate size and format before displaying or uploading.
document.querySelector('#result').src = event.data.imageDataUrl;
});
A safer variant has the iframe return a server-generated, short-lived asset URL rather than a large data URL. The owner decides exactly what is exposed.

Use Playwright for an authorized browser screenshot
Playwright runs a real browser and exposes page and frame APIs. It is a better fit for rendered-pixel screenshots, automated tests, and server-side jobs when you control the session and are permitted to capture the page. It still does not turn parent JavaScript into a cross-origin DOM reader.
import { chromium } from 'playwright';
const browser = await chromium.launch();
const page = await browser.newPage({ viewport: { width: 1440, height: 1000 }, deviceScaleFactor: 2 });
await page.goto('https://app.example.test/dashboard', { waitUntil: 'networkidle' });
await page.getByRole('button', { name: 'Open preview' }).click();
await page.locator('[role="dialog"]').waitFor({ state: 'visible' });
await page.screenshot({ path: 'modal.png', fullPage: false });
await browser.close();
For a frame-aware readiness check, inspect the frame list and wait for a known URL or selector only when the frame is same-origin or otherwise observable through Playwright’s permitted browser context:
const preview = page.frames().find(f => f.url().includes('/preview'));
if (!preview) throw new Error('Preview frame was not found');
await preview.locator('[data-ready="true"]').waitFor();
Keep credentials, cookies, authorization headers, and captured output in a controlled environment. Do not automate pages you are not authorized to access.

ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API and MCP server. Its capture request can open the target page and return an image or PDF without you managing a browser process. It is most useful when the modal can be opened through the page’s normal state or a capture script, and when you need repeatable server-side jobs.
Cookie banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets are removed before the shot. Bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, timeouts, and cache hits are not billed; the response identifies the page verdict and billing status in X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. Cross-origin iframe policy still applies: an API cannot legitimately expose a frame that its owner or the target page does not allow you to capture.

The iframe is missing from the image
First check the origin and sandbox flags. If it is cross-origin or opaque-sandboxed, html2canvas cannot render its document. Use owner cooperation or Playwright/API capture with authorization.
The capture is blank
Confirm the modal is not hidden, the iframe has loaded, and the capture runs after a render frame. Check for navigation errors, authentication redirects, and a zero-width or zero-height container.
The canvas export throws a security error
An external image may have tainted the canvas. Configure the image server for CORS and use useCORS where appropriate. This does not fix iframe-document access.

Playwright cannot find the modal
Verify the click actually opens it, use a stable role or data attribute, wait for visibility, and inspect the page’s frame list. A cross-origin frame can still be part of a browser screenshot even though parent-page JavaScript cannot query its DOM.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can a parent page capture a cross-origin iframe with html2canvas?
No. The browser withholds the frame document from the parent, and html2canvas documents cross-origin iframe rendering as unsupported.
Does setting useCORS make an iframe same-origin?
No. It concerns external image resources and canvas tainting, not access to an iframe’s document.
Should I use toDataURL or toBlob?
Use toBlob for downloads and uploads in most applications; use toDataURL when an inline data URL is specifically needed.
Can browser automation capture a cross-origin iframe?
A controlled browser screenshot can capture the rendered page when you are authorized, but automation does not grant ordinary page JavaScript cross-origin DOM access.
