For a one-off screenshot, use Chrome Headless: chrome --headless --screenshot --window-size=1280,900 https://example.com/. It saves screenshot.png in the current working directory. For a repeatable script, use Playwright; choose a viewport, full-page image, or a specific element to match what you need. A timeout sets a capture deadline, not proof that a page’s dynamic content is ready.
Choose the quickest method for the screenshot you need
The practical choice is between a direct browser command for a single capture and browser automation for a repeatable workflow. Decide first whether the screenshot should show the visible viewport, the entire scrollable page, or one component. Those are different capture scopes, not interchangeable settings.
| Need | Use | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| One quick capture of a URL | Chrome Headless command line | A single command writes screenshot.png to the current working directory. Set a viewport size if the visible layout matters. Chrome Headless documentation |
| Repeat captures from a script | Playwright | The screenshot API writes to a chosen path and supports full-page capture. Playwright screenshots documentation |
| Only one component | Playwright element screenshot | Target the relevant element rather than saving the full viewport or page. Playwright screenshot tools |
Neither method is guaranteed to be fastest on every machine or site. Browser installation, page weight, network conditions, and how much of the page you capture affect the practical wait and output.
Capture one URL with Chrome Headless

chrome --headless --screenshot --window-size=1280,900 https://example.com/
Chrome saves the screenshot as screenshot.png in the current working directory. Change https://example.com/ to the full page URL you want to capture. The window-size argument sets the viewport used for the visible layout; the example dimensions are a starting point, not a universal standard. Responsive sites may render a different arrangement at another width or height. See the Chrome Headless command-line reference and check it against the Chrome version installed on your system.
Set a maximum wait when needed
You can add a timeout in milliseconds:
chrome --headless --screenshot --window-size=1280,900 --timeout=5000 https://example.com/
--timeout=5000 means Chrome proceeds to capture after a maximum wait of 5,000 milliseconds, even if the page is still loading. It is a deadline, not a signal that images, animations, or other asynchronous content are ready. If a page needs a particular piece of content to appear, a scripted workflow with an appropriate readiness condition is more suitable than simply increasing the deadline. Chrome flag behavior can vary with installed versions; consult the official reference if a command is rejected.
Find the output file
The output path is relative to the shell’s current working directory. If you cannot find screenshot.png, check where the terminal was positioned when the command ran. If you want an organized set of captures, run the command from the intended output folder or use the output-path option supported by the Chrome version you have installed, after confirming its syntax in the documentation.

Use Playwright for repeatable captures
Playwright makes sense when a capture belongs in a script, needs to be repeated, or should target more than the initial viewport. Install Playwright in a JavaScript project and install its browser before running a script:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
npm init -y
npm install playwright
npx playwright install chromium
Save this as screenshot.js, then run node screenshot.js:
const { chromium } = require('playwright');
(async () => {
const browser = await chromium.launch({ headless: true });
const page = await browser.newPage({
viewport: { width: 1280, height: 900 }
});
await page.goto('https://example.com/');
await page.screenshot({ path: 'screenshot.png' });
await browser.close();
})();
The default screenshot call captures the viewport. The script chooses the viewport explicitly so the page’s responsive layout is reproducible at that size. Playwright’s screenshot API and its documented full-page option are described in the official screenshots guide.

Capture a full page
Set fullPage: true when you need one tall image of the scrollable page rather than only what fits in the viewport:
await page.screenshot({ path: 'full-page.png', fullPage: true });
Use full-page capture for an overview or a visual record of the whole page. It can produce a very tall image, so it may be less convenient to inspect, share, or compare than a viewport image. Playwright’s CLI also documents a --full-page option; see its screenshots and PDF command reference.

const card = page.locator('.target-card');
await card.screenshot({ path: 'card.png' });
Replace .target-card with a CSS selector that identifies the intended element on the target page. If the selector matches nothing, the capture cannot target the component; if it identifies multiple elements, make it specific enough to select the one you mean. The Playwright screenshot tools documentation describes targeting an element.
Make the result match your purpose
Pick a viewport deliberately
A screenshot records a rendered layout at a particular viewport, not an abstract, device-independent version of a website. If you need to show a desktop layout, choose a desktop-sized viewport; if you need to document a narrow responsive layout, choose that size instead. Keep the dimensions consistent when comparing captures from different dates or pages. The documented Chrome command uses --window-size, and Playwright lets you set a viewport when creating a page.
Choose viewport, full page, or element
- Viewport: Use it for a quick record of the first screen or a specific visible state.
- Full page: Use it when one tall image of the scrollable page is more useful than a viewport image.
- Element: Use it when the page contains a single component you need to isolate.
Before capturing, consider whether a very tall full-page image will be usable for your purpose. If not, a viewport capture or a targeted element may make the result easier to inspect.

Allow for pages that load dynamically
A page may continue fetching or changing content after navigation begins. A fixed timeout only establishes how long the browser waits before it proceeds; it does not verify that the page’s own asynchronous work is complete. For a repeatable script, identify a page-specific readiness condition—such as a known element appearing—and wait for that condition before capturing. Do not assume that a single delay works for every URL. The Chrome reference specifically describes its timeout as a maximum wait even if loading continues.

| Symptom | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
The command reports that chrome is not found |
The Chrome executable is not available under that name in the command-line environment. | Check that Chrome is installed, use the executable name or path appropriate to your operating system, and consult the documentation for your installed version. Executable names and setup vary by operating system. |
| The screenshot is not where expected | The command wrote the default screenshot.png in the terminal’s current working directory. |
Check the directory from which you ran the command, or run it from the folder where you want the file. |
| The page looks cut off | A viewport screenshot includes only the visible viewport. | Use Playwright’s fullPage: true or its documented CLI full-page option if you need the scrollable page in one image. |
| Images or page content are missing | The capture may have started before that content finished loading; a maximum timeout does not certify readiness. | In an automation script, wait for a suitable page-specific condition before taking the screenshot. Verify that the condition represents the content you actually need. |
| The layout differs from another capture | The viewport dimensions may differ, causing a responsive layout change. | Set and reuse explicit viewport dimensions for comparable captures. |
| The element capture fails or shows the wrong component | The selector may not identify the intended element, or may identify more than one. | Inspect the page’s markup and use a selector specific to the component you want. |
| Playwright cannot launch Chromium | The browser may not have been installed for the project, or setup may not match the installed environment. | Run npx playwright install chromium in the project and review the Playwright installation guidance for your environment. |

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. Make one GET request with the target URL to return an image or PDF. For a WebP capture, replace the example URL with the page you need:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for API details. Before a capture, it accepts cookie or consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each of those steps can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers report the page verdict and whether the capture was billed. Its MCP server offers take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for AI agents and MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 shots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I capture a screenshot of a public webpage without opening a visible browser window?
Yes. Chrome Headless and the Playwright example both run headlessly, so they do not require a visible browser window for the capture.
Does the Chrome timeout guarantee that every image on a page has loaded?
No. It is a maximum wait before capture, even if loading continues; it does not guarantee that asynchronous page content is ready.
