To capture every request Chrome makes for a page, open DevTools before the activity starts, select Network, keep recording enabled, turn on Preserve log, reload, and then reproduce the workflow. Inspect individual requests in the Headers, Payload, Preview, and Response tabs. Export the session as a HAR when you need a portable log, and use Copy response or an automation API when you need response bodies as files.

What “all network requests” means in Chrome

Chrome can show document, script, stylesheet, image, fetch/XHR, WebSocket and other traffic generated while the Network panel is recording. “All” is therefore bounded by when recording starts and what the page actually generates. Requests that finished before DevTools opened are not retroactively added. A page can also create traffic after your initial load, so reproduce the complete interaction while the panel remains open.

The Network panel is a live diagnostic view, not a permanent packet recorder. It exposes application-layer details such as URLs, methods, status codes, headers, payloads, timing and (for many responses) bodies. It does not decrypt or replace a packet capture of every lower-level connection.

Capture a complete session manually

  1. Open the page and DevTools first. Navigate to the target page, open Chrome DevTools (⋮ → More tools → Developer tools or Ctrl/Cmd+Shift+I), and choose Network. Chrome records requests while this panel is open. See the Network features reference.
  2. Confirm recording. The round record control at the upper left must be active. If it is stopped, click it to start recording. Use the clear icon only when you intentionally want to discard the current log.
  3. Enable Preserve log. Select Preserve log in the Network toolbar when the flow includes reloads, redirects or navigation. Without it, a navigation normally replaces the previous page’s entries.
  4. Reload with Network focused. Hard-reload or reload the page while the Network panel is visible. This captures the initial document request and the resources requested during page load. Opening DevTools after loading and skipping this reload leaves a gap.
  5. Reproduce the exact action. Sign in (if appropriate), submit the form, open the menu, scroll, trigger lazy loading, or perform the action you are investigating. Keep the panel open until asynchronous fetches and WebSocket activity have settled.
  6. Inspect and filter. Use the filter box and type buttons such as Fetch/XHR, Doc, JS, CSS, Img, and WS. Click a row to inspect its URL, method, status, request and response headers, payload, timing, Preview, and Response. The panel’s overview is documented in Chrome’s Network panel guide.
  7. Save the log. Right-click in the request table (or use the export control) and choose Export HAR. Keep the default sanitized export unless you have a specific need for sensitive headers.

Capture initial-load traffic reliably

Reloading with Network open is the simplest completeness check. If the page redirects to another origin, keep Preserve log enabled so the chain remains visible. For pages that load data only after interaction, leave the panel recording and perform each interaction; a reload alone cannot reveal requests that the application never made.

Understand the Network table

Column or view What it tells you
Name and URL The resource and destination, including query parameters.
Method and status HTTP verb and result such as 200, 304, 404 or 500.
Initiator The script, document or other cause that triggered the request.
Timing Queueing, connection, request, waiting and download phases.
Headers Request and response metadata, cookies and cache information.
Payload Form data, query parameters or a request body when present.
Preview and Response Parsed output and the raw response body when Chrome can display it.

Save response bodies, not just request metadata

One response from the UI

Select a request, open Response, then use Copy response from the context menu. Paste the result into a file or editor. This is useful for JSON, HTML, text and many other body types. Preview is a rendered or parsed view; use Response when you need the actual text Chrome received.

What a HAR contains

A HAR packages request metadata and, when available, exported response content. It is convenient for sharing a timeline with another developer, but it is not a guarantee that every body is embedded. Large, streaming or unusual responses may be represented differently, and extension APIs deliberately omit request content for efficiency. Treat the file as a diagnostic record rather than a lossless archive of every byte.

Sanitized versus sensitive exports

Chrome’s default sanitized HAR excludes sensitive header classes including Cookie, Set-Cookie and Authorization. If you enable the sensitive-data preference, those values can be included. Either way, inspect the file before sharing: URLs can contain account identifiers and query secrets, request bodies can contain personal data, and response content can contain application records. Remove tokens, cookies, credentials and personal information from any copy sent to a vendor or posted publicly. The export behavior and controls are described in the official reference.

Automate collection with a Chrome extension

A DevTools extension can read the known network log through chrome.devtools.network.getHAR() and receive completed entries with chrome.devtools.network.onRequestFinished. Call each entry’s getContent() method to retrieve its response content; the extension-facing HAR itself does not include request content for efficiency. The API reference is at browser.devtools.network.

chrome.devtools.network.onRequestFinished.addListener(request => {
  request.getContent((content, encoding) => {
    console.log({
      url: request.request.url,
      status: request.response.status,
      mimeType: request.response.content.mimeType,
      encoding,
      content
    });
  });
});

chrome.devtools.network.getHAR(har => {
  console.log('Known entries:', har.entries.length);
});

This listener receives requests that finish after the extension is attached. For a page that loaded before DevTools opened, reload first. The extension API documentation notes that doing so generally makes getHAR() align with the Network-panel list.

Use the Chrome DevTools Protocol for repeatable capture

For test runners and custom tools, the DevTools Protocol Network domain emits request and response events, headers, timing and body operations. Enable the domain, record event identifiers, and call Network.getResponseBody after a response has arrived. Read the method and event definitions in the Chrome DevTools Protocol Network specification.

Choosing the right method

Method Best for Main limitation
DevTools UI One-off debugging and visual inspection Manual repetition; easy to miss traffic if opened late.
Extension API Collecting completed entries and content in a Chrome workflow Requires an extension and DevTools context; content is fetched per entry.
DevTools Protocol Repeatable tests, pipelines and programmatic processing You must manage event ordering, body availability and storage.

Why requests are missing

  • DevTools opened too late: reload with Network selected before reproducing the action.
  • Recording stopped: enable the record control and clear the log only when ready.
  • Navigation erased the list: turn on Preserve log.
  • The request is filtered out: clear the text filter and choose All; a type button can hide other categories.
  • The page never made the request: check the Initiator and reproduce the exact state, including scrolling or a click that triggers lazy loading.
  • Service worker or cache behavior: inspect status and timing, and compare a controlled reload; a cached response can look different from a fresh transfer.
  • Body retrieval fails: wait for completion, handle protocol errors, and expect streaming, evicted or restricted bodies to be unavailable through getResponseBody or getContent().
  • WebSocket messages are overlooked: select the WS request and inspect its Messages view rather than expecting separate HTTP rows for each frame.

Performance, reliability and storage considerations

Recording every resource creates a large in-memory log on media-heavy pages. Export or process entries during long runs, and avoid leaving an unbounded capture active in production browsing. For automation, persist URL, method, status, headers, timing and body together with a request identifier so asynchronous events cannot be confused. Redact secrets before writing shared artifacts, and restrict access to raw captures.

Use a deterministic browser profile, fixed viewport and controlled authentication when comparing runs. Repeat the reload and interaction sequence, record timestamps, and distinguish a server response from a cache hit. A HAR is excellent for diagnosis and hand-off; a protocol client is more suitable when you need repeatable extraction or assertions.

Or skip the browser setup

If your goal is a clean image or PDF of a page rather than a diagnostic trace, ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API and MCP server. One GET request can return PNG, JPEG, WebP or PDF. Before capture it accepts cookie or consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets; each step can be disabled. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing result. Its MCP tools—take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf—work with Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

See the complete parameter list and options in the ScreenshotNeo documentation. The API also supports full-page and element captures, 12 device presets plus custom viewports, retina scale, dark mode, lazy-image loading, PDF paper and page-range controls, custom CSS and JavaScript, clicks, waits, blocked ads or resources, headers, cookies, user agents, authorization, timezone, geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, TTL-based caching, signed image links, asynchronous webhooks, bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call, usage data and an OpenAPI specification.

Frequently asked questions

Can Chrome capture requests made before I opened DevTools?

No. Open DevTools first, select Network, then reload and repeat the workflow.

Does a sanitized HAR remove every secret?

No. It omits several sensitive header classes by default, but URLs, query strings, bodies and response data can still identify users or contain confidential information. Inspect and redact the file.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will Preserve log keep requests from a different tab?

It preserves entries across navigations in the page whose Network panel is recording; it does not merge unrelated tabs into one log.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why is a response visible in Chrome but absent from my HAR?

HAR content can be omitted for efficiency or unavailable for certain streaming and large responses. Retrieve the body separately with Copy response, an extension’s getContent(), or the protocol’s Network.getResponseBody when supported.

Are WebSocket frames separate HTTP requests?

No. Inspect the single WebSocket connection and its Messages view to see frames exchanged over it.
