To save one page, use your browser’s Save or Web Archive feature. To browse a linked, mostly static site offline, mirror it with HTTrack: set a starting URL, choose a local project directory, limit the crawl to the pages and files you need, then open the generated index.html. A mirror is not a working copy of every online feature: JavaScript-driven content, streaming media, and server-side interactions may not survive.
Choose the right way to save the site
The best approach depends on whether you need one page, a collection of linked pages, or an interactive application. A saved page is simplest for a single article; a recursive mirror is more useful for a site with ordinary links and static files.
| What you need | Suitable approach | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|
| One page for later reading | Browser Save or Web Archive, or a single-page capture tool | A saved page may not include resources or interactive behavior that depend on the live site. |
| A mostly static site or documentation section | HTTrack or a command-line mirror | HTTrack does not execute JavaScript; runtime-built links and some lazy-loaded assets can be missed. |
| Pages reached through forms or scripts | Browser-assisted capture while signed in with authorized access | The capture still depends on an authorized session and may not reproduce server-backed features offline. |
| A JavaScript-heavy web application | Browser-based archival or browser-assisted capture | Even a browser capture cannot make server-side behavior or streaming services work without a connection. |
HTTrack describes its purpose simply: “HTTrack copies a website to your disk so you can read it offline.” Its official product page lists version 3.50, dated 09/01/2026: HTTrack.

HTTrack downloads pages and their retained resources into a local directory, then rewrites links it has kept so they point to local files. The result is a directory-based mirror, not a single self-contained file. The usual starting point for browsing it is the project’s index.html.

- Install the appropriate interface. Choose the HTTrack version for your operating system from the official product site. The interface and exact labels can vary by platform.
- Create a project. Enter a project name and select a local base directory with enough available storage. The final size depends on the crawl scope and the site’s assets; there is no universal size estimate.
- Enter the starting URL. Use the page or section where you want the mirror to begin. A broad homepage can lead to a much larger crawl than a specific documentation or archive section.
- Constrain the crawl before starting. Set scan rules for host boundaries and paths, exclude irrelevant file types or large media where appropriate, and set connection limits. Keep the crawl within the site and content you are authorized to copy.
- Start the mirror and watch its log. Look for failed requests, excluded resources, and pages outside the intended scope. A finished job does not by itself mean every page or asset was captured.
- Open the local entry point. When the mirror completes, open the project’s
index.htmlin a browser. Follow links to confirm that retained pages resolve to local paths. - Test before relying on it. Check representative pages, images, documents, and navigation with the internet disconnected. This reveals missing resources that may be masked while the browser can still reach the live site.
Set scope to avoid an oversized or incomplete mirror
A crawler follows links. If the starting page links to external sites, deep archives, or large media files, a broad crawl can consume substantial storage and capture material you did not intend to keep. Use the tool’s scan rules to define what belongs in the copy before launching it.
- Keep the crawl on the intended host and paths. Restrict external domains and unrelated site sections instead of relying on the starting URL alone.
- Review file-type limits. Exclude media or formats you do not need, while retaining the images, stylesheets, scripts, and documents required for the pages you intend to read.
- Set reasonable connection limits. Avoid an unnecessarily aggressive crawl; follow the website’s access terms and do not try to bypass access controls.
- Check the log and directory size. The transfer log can show failures and exclusions. The completed directory’s measured size is the useful basis for deciding whether it fits on a USB drive or other storage.
Copy the entire mirror directory, not just its index.html, when moving it to another device. The entry page relies on the local resources and pages alongside it.
What will and will not work offline
Usually suitable: retained static files
Downloaded HTML and resources such as images or documents can be available locally when the mirror includes them. Rewritten links let you move between captured pages. Test the actual pages you need, because the crawl may have skipped linked resources or encountered failures.

Not guaranteed: JavaScript-built pages and lazy content
HTTrack’s command-line guide says it does not run JavaScript. URLs created at runtime can therefore remain undiscovered, and assets loaded only after scrolling or interacting may be absent. A crawler can save the delivered page and files it finds without reproducing the browser’s runtime behavior.
Not an offline substitute: server-side features and streaming
Do not assume that a saved HTML file preserves search, account actions, forms that require a server, paywalled material, or streaming media. Those features depend on remote services or authorization, not merely on the presence of a local page.
Capture pages that a crawler cannot discover
Forms, scripts, and interactive navigation can lead to URLs a crawler does not see by following ordinary links. Browser-assisted capture can reach pages through those interactions, but only use it with a session and permissions you are authorized to use. Preserve the session through the capture tool’s documented cookie or browser workflow; do not treat an authenticated capture as permission to redistribute protected content.

For a JavaScript-heavy site, test the browser-assisted result offline as carefully as a mirror. Capturing the rendered view can preserve what was visible at capture time, but it does not make live data, interactive server features, or streaming content work without internet access.

For one page, the browser’s Save or Web Archive option is usually less work than crawling a site. A single-file or .mht output can suit workflows that need one file, but compatibility and file size are trade-offs: verify that the target browser can open the format and that the result includes the content you need.
If the goal is offline reading rather than navigating between pages, a single-page capture may be enough. If you need the page as an image for documentation or a report, a screenshot is useful, but it is not a browsable website mirror.

Or skip the browser setup
For a screenshot of a page rather than a navigable offline mirror, ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API. It returns a screenshot or PDF from one GET request; it does not replace HTTrack when you need a directory of linked pages to browse offline.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. Cookie banners, popups, and chat widgets are removed before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and the response identifies the page verdict and billing status in headers. An MCP server offers screenshot tools for AI agents, and the Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. If that fits your use, sign up for free.
Troubleshoot common offline-copy problems
The local homepage opens, but links go online or fail
The linked page may not have been captured, may have been excluded by scan rules, or may be outside the mirrored host or path. Check the HTTrack log and crawl scope, then rerun the mirror with the needed page paths included.
Images or styles are missing
The relevant resources may have failed, been excluded by file-type limits, or loaded dynamically. Check the log and rules; for dynamically loaded assets, a crawler that does not execute JavaScript may not discover them. Verify the result offline rather than assuming a successful top-level page means all assets were saved.

Some content appears only when online
That content may depend on JavaScript, a remote API, an authenticated session, or a server-side feature. Use an authorized browser-assisted workflow for pages reachable only through browser interaction, and understand that it still cannot make remote functionality available offline.
The mirror is much larger than expected
The crawl may include broad link paths, external hosts, or large media. Stop and narrow the host, path, and file-type rules before repeating it. Measure the completed directory to choose portable storage.

The site changed after it was saved
A mirror is a copy of what the capture process obtained at that time, not a synchronized offline site. Recrawl when you need a newer copy, and retest the pages that matter.
Check the copy before travel or planned offline use
- Open the local
index.htmland navigate to representative pages. - Disconnect from the internet and repeat the checks so live fallbacks do not hide missing files.
- Inspect important images, documents, and page links, along with any section that requires a sign-in.
- Confirm the full mirror directory fits on the storage device, then test the copy from that device if portability matters.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I save a website as one file?
Some browser and archival workflows offer a single-file or .mht format, but it can have compatibility and size trade-offs. For a multi-page site, a directory mirror is generally the more natural format.
Will an offline copy update when the website changes?
No. A saved page or mirror reflects what was captured; capture it again when you need a newer version.
