The fastest way to capture a website as a video is to use a screen recorder such as Loom: select the browser tab, window, or full screen, choose a microphone if you want narration, start recording, perform the walkthrough, then stop and edit or share the result. For a custom workflow, Chrome’s getDisplayMedia() and tabCapture APIs provide browser video streams that your code can save with MediaRecorder. Chrome DevTools Recorder is different: it records structured interactions for replay and performance checks, not a conventional tutorial video.

Decide first whether viewers need a watchable MP4/WebM-style demonstration or whether your team needs a replayable test. That single choice prevents using DevTools Recorder when a screen recorder is required, or writing custom capture code for a job a browser recorder already handles.
Record a website without coding
1. Prepare the page and the script
- Open the exact page you want to demonstrate and close unrelated tabs or notifications.
- Set the browser zoom, window size, and scroll position before recording. A consistent viewport makes the final video easier to follow.
- Write the actions in order: navigation, clicks, form entry, scrolling, and the final result. Do one dry run so pauses and loading time are intentional.
- Hide private information. Screen capture records everything visible in the selected surface, including notifications and autofill suggestions.
2. Select a recorder and capture surface
Open a screen recorder such as Loom and sign in or install its current browser extension or app. Start a new recording and choose one of the available surfaces:

- Browser tab: records the selected tab, which is usually the cleanest option for a website walkthrough.
- Window: records the entire browser window, including browser chrome and any tab you switch to.
- Entire screen: records multiple windows and system activity; use it only when the demonstration requires them.
Read the browser’s sharing dialog carefully before confirming. Selecting the wrong tab is a common cause of blank or irrelevant footage.

3. Configure microphone and camera
Turn on the microphone when you are narrating. Loom lets you choose any connected microphone; a USB microphone can improve clarity but is not required. Enable a webcam only when your face adds context. If you do not need narration, disable the microphone to avoid room noise and accidental conversations.
4. Record the walkthrough
- Start the recording and wait for the countdown to finish.
- Follow the prepared sequence at a steady pace. Pause after clicks so viewers can see the result.
- Explain loading delays or errors rather than talking over them.
- Stop the recording when the final state is visible.
5. Review, edit, and share
Play the recording from the beginning. Trim dead air, remove failed attempts, and check that narration matches the cursor and page state. Add annotations or cursor emphasis when the recorder supports them. Loom creates a shareable link after stopping; download or export according to the tool’s current options if you need a local file. Before publishing, open the link in a private window to verify that viewers can access it.
Record a browser tab with Chrome APIs
For a developer-built recorder, Chrome’s official extension guidance uses navigator.mediaDevices.getDisplayMedia({ audio: true, video: true }). The call opens a permission dialog where the user chooses a tab, window, or screen. The returned MediaStream can be passed to MediaRecorder and assembled into a downloadable WebM file.

</script>The browser controls the permission prompt; your page cannot silently select a tab or bypass the user’s choice. Audio availability also depends on the selected surface and browser/operating-system rules. Test the resulting file before building editing or upload logic around a particular codec.
Handle navigation correctly
When getDisplayMedia() is called from a content script, Chrome documents that recording automatically ends when the user navigates to a new page. If your extension must keep recording across navigations, use an offscreen document for the recording work. Keep the capture state, recorder, and stop handling outside the page that is being replaced.
Capture a specific tab in an extension
Chrome’s tabCapture API is designed for extension developers who need to target a known tab instead of asking the user to pick any surface. Starting with Chrome 116, an extension service worker can obtain a stream ID after a user gesture and pass that ID to an offscreen document, where recording can continue. Design the flow around an explicit click on your extension UI, request only the permissions you need, and show a visible recording state.

Use tabCapture when tab targeting and extension integration matter. Use getDisplayMedia() for a regular web app or when the user should choose the tab, window, or screen interactively.

Use DevTools Recorder for repeatable flows, not video
In Chrome, open More options > More tools > Recorder and create a new recording. DevTools Recorder can capture clicks, navigation, and form entry; replay the flow; let you edit steps and add assertions; and measure performance. That output is useful for QA documentation and regression checks, but it is not documented as a conventional screen-video exporter. If stakeholders need a visual tutorial, run the same flow while using a screen recorder.
Audio, privacy, and quality checklist
- Microphone: select the intended input and make a short test recording. Narration is optional.
- System audio: the sharing dialog and operating system determine whether tab or system sound is available. Do not assume that microphone audio includes website audio.
- Camera: enable it only when it supports the explanation; otherwise it reduces the page area.
- Notifications: enable focus or do-not-disturb mode and close messaging apps.
- Credentials: never record passwords, API keys, private dashboards, customer data, or browser autofill.
- Pointer clarity: move slowly, pause after actions, and use cursor emphasis or annotations when available.
- Loading: wait for asynchronous content, images, and menus before advancing. A fast cursor over an unfinished page is difficult to understand.
- Accessibility: narrate what changes on screen and keep text large enough to read at the final playback size.
Troubleshooting common failures
The recording is black or shows the wrong page
Stop and restart the capture, then select the intended tab or window in the sharing dialog. A recorder cannot show a surface that was not selected. Check whether a protected page or operating-system restriction prevents capture.
There is no audio
Confirm that the microphone is enabled, the correct input device is selected, and the browser has microphone permission. If website audio is required, select a surface and operating-system option that exposes tab or system audio; otherwise record narration separately and add it during editing.
Recording stops after a link or form submission
A content-script capture ends when the user navigates. Move recording into an extension offscreen document, or capture the browser surface from a context that survives navigation.

Inspect the recorded blob’s MIME type and test it in the target players before deployment. Browser support for codecs and containers varies. If you need a different delivery format, transcode the WebM output in your post-production pipeline.

The page is slow or unfinished
Perform a dry run, wait for network requests and lazy content to complete, and avoid clicking while the interface is still changing. For a repeatable technical test, use DevTools Recorder’s replay and performance measurements instead of relying on timing from a human video.
