To capture a webpage that contains Flash, first get the Flash content to render in an emulator such as Ruffle, then take a normal screenshot of the page once the frame you want is visible. Adobe Flash Player is discontinued and is not a safe or supported way to do this: Adobe ended support on December 31, 2020, and blocked Flash content from running in Flash Player beginning January 12, 2021. If you have the original SWF and need an image of the movie alone, Ruffle also documents a command-line exporter. Which route works depends on whether you need the surrounding page, have access to the SWF, and can get the particular content to run in Ruffle.
Choose the capture method that matches what you need
There are two different outputs people often mean by a “Flash screenshot.” A browser or operating-system screenshot preserves the webpage layout around the movie. An SWF export gives you an image of the movie or a selected frame, without the page around it.

If the page context matters, start with Ruffle in the browser. If you only need a still from a movie and already have its SWF, try the exporter. Neither method can recover a Flash file that is missing or make unsupported content render correctly.
Why not use the old Flash browser plugin?
Adobe’s Flash Player support ended on December 31, 2020. Adobe then blocked Flash content from running in Flash Player beginning January 12, 2021, and strongly recommends that users uninstall the player. Installing an obsolete plugin or relying on an old browser build is not a routine workaround to recommend for a screenshot.

For creators rebuilding Flash experiences rather than capturing them, Adobe’s 2017 announcement pointed to open formats including HTML5, WebGL, and WebAssembly. That is a migration path, not a way to retrieve a missing movie for a one-off image.
Capture a live webpage with Ruffle
Ruffle is a Flash Player emulator with desktop and web versions. Its web version can detect embedded Flash content and replace it with the Ruffle player. The exact setup depends on how Ruffle is made available for the page; the project’s repository and web README describe the project and web integration.
- Open the page in an environment where Ruffle is available. Use the Ruffle web version or a page setup that provides the Ruffle player. If you are opening a local HTML page, Ruffle’s user FAQ notes that browser restrictions mean it cannot run directly from a local file; serve the page through a local web server instead.
- Wait for the player and movie to render. Let the page finish loading and check that the expected movie appears. If the player shows a play, unmute, or interaction prompt, click it and wait for the frame you want. Browser autoplay rules can prevent sound from starting until a user interacts with the page.
- Set the page to the state you need. Navigate or interact with the movie if it has controls, then make sure the desired frame is visible. A screenshot taken before the movie renders will show the empty player, loading state, or prompt instead.
- Capture the page with your browser or operating system’s screenshot feature. Use the capture method available on your device. The Ruffle sources explain how its player renders Flash, but do not specify one universal screenshot shortcut for every browser and operating system.
- Check the saved image. Confirm that it includes the intended movie frame and the amount of page context you need. If the result is blank or differs from the expected frame, diagnose the rendering first rather than repeatedly taking screenshots.
This method is best when the page surrounding the Flash element is part of the evidence or presentation. It captures what is visibly rendered; it does not guarantee that Ruffle’s output matches the original Flash Player exactly.

Export an image from an SWF when page context is unnecessary
If you have the SWF file and only need the movie image, Ruffle documents an exporter that can produce PNG captures and select frames. Its repository gives this example:
cargo run --release --package=exporter -- path/to/file.swf path/to/screenshots --frames 5
Replace path/to/file.swf with the SWF’s location and path/to/screenshots with the destination directory. The example requests frame 5. The exporter can run headless, but its documented requirements include hardware acceleration. Consult the Ruffle repository for current build and exporter instructions; project commands and support can change.

This route is useful for a movie-only frame, not a faithful screenshot of the webpage. It does not preserve the site’s surrounding layout, browser chrome, or page state.

What can go wrong, and what to try
- Ruffle does not appear or replace the embedded content. The web player must be available to the page, and the page must expose content Ruffle can detect. Check the web integration guidance in Ruffle’s README and confirm that the page and its movie assets load.
- The player appears but the movie stays blank or behaves differently. Emulation is not complete for every movie. Ruffle’s repository says support for ActionScript 1, 2, and 3 is still unfinished, so a particular title may fail or render differently. Try another available copy of the SWF if you have one; a screenshot cannot fix an emulation limitation.
- The movie shows a prompt or has no sound. Interact with the player and wait for the intended visual state before capturing. Autoplay restrictions can require a click before sound begins; sound itself may not be necessary for a still image.
- The Wayback Machine page shows Ruffle’s likely CORS block message. Ruffle’s FAQ says that for the Wayback Machine this indicates the SWF was not archived. The archived webpage does not guarantee that its Flash assets are present. Look for the SWF elsewhere if you need to try the exporter; otherwise there may be no file to render.
- A local HTML page will not run Ruffle. Serve it from a local web server rather than opening the file directly, as described in the Ruffle user FAQ.
- The exported image does not match a browser screenshot. The exporter captures movie imagery from the SWF, whereas the browser route captures the visible page with its layout. Choose based on the intended output, not on the expectation that the two methods produce identical images.
Reliability and practical limits
Flash emulation is a best-effort route, not a guarantee of fidelity. Results can depend on the particular SWF, whether the file can be reached, the page’s behavior, and Ruffle’s support for the movie’s ActionScript. For archival pages, distinguish between an archived HTML page and an archived SWF: the page can survive while its embedded asset does not.

Frequently asked questions
How do I make Ruffle start playing content automatically when a page first loads like Flash Player?
Ruffle’s user FAQ covers this exact behavior and its interaction model. Browser autoplay policies may still require a user interaction, particularly for sound, so do not assume a page will enter the desired state without a click.
Can a screenshot restore Flash content that is no longer available?
No. A screenshot records rendered pixels. If the SWF is missing from the live page or archive and no separate copy is available, a capture tool cannot recreate the unavailable movie.
Can I capture only the Flash movie without the rest of the webpage?
Yes, if you have the SWF and Ruffle’s exporter supports the content. The exporter produces movie imagery rather than a page screenshot; use the browser route when surrounding webpage context matters.
