There is no single capture that preserves every layer of a live web page. For the HTML after scripts have run, use Chrome Headless --dump-dom. For an offline bundle of a page and its resources, use Chrome’s MHTML extension API. For requests and responses, export a HAR; for DOM structure plus selected computed styles, use the Chrome DevTools Protocol; for appearance, take a screenshot or PDF. Choose by the evidence you need, and combine outputs when one artifact is not enough.

What “capture the rendered page” can mean

A browser begins with an HTML response, parses it into a document, fetches referenced resources, applies styles, and runs scripts that can change the document. “Rendered HTML, CSS, and JavaScript” might therefore mean any of several things:

  • Post-script document: the DOM after scripts have modified it.
  • Source resources: the HTML, stylesheets, scripts, images, fonts, and other files the page references or loads.
  • Network record: requests and responses exchanged while the page loaded.
  • Computed presentation: layout and selected style values calculated by the browser.
  • Visual evidence: pixels or a print-oriented document showing what a visitor saw.

These are different deliverables. A DOM dump is not a source archive, a HAR is not an offline web page, and a screenshot does not expose the underlying markup. No method documented below promises to capture all source files, runtime state, and visual appearance in one universally replayable package.

Choose the right capture method

What you need Use What it records Important limitation
Page bundle for local reference Chrome extension chrome.pageCapture.saveAsMHTML() MHTML containing a page and its resources Chrome says MHTML can be loaded only from the file system and only in the main frame.
HTML structure after scripts run Chrome Headless --dump-dom or a browser automation content API Serialized document structure after browser parsing and script execution It does not guarantee embedded styles, resources, or runtime state.
Requests and resource investigation Chrome DevTools Network HAR export Captured network request data in a portable JSON-based archive HAR is not a complete rendered-page archive; sensitive headers are excluded in sanitized exports.
Structured DOM, layout, and selected styles Chrome DevTools Protocol DOMSnapshot.captureSnapshot Flattened DOM plus layout and caller-selected computed styles It is structured protocol data, not a screenshot or packaged page.
Visual appearance Playwright screenshot or PDF Image or PDF output Playwright PDF uses print CSS by default; select screen media first if that is what you need.

For debugging missing CSS or JavaScript, a useful combination is a post-script DOM capture plus a HAR. For a visual defect report, add a screenshot. For preserving a page as a browser file, use MHTML, while accounting for its loading restriction.

Capture the post-script DOM with Chrome Headless

Chrome Headless --dump-dom loads and parses the page, runs scripts that may change the DOM, and serializes the resulting DOM. That makes it appropriate when you want to inspect the document the browser constructed rather than only the original HTML response.

  1. Install or locate a current Chrome executable that supports Headless mode.
  2. Run Chrome with --headless, --dump-dom, and the target URL.
  3. If the page needs additional time, set a bounded --timeout in milliseconds.
  4. Inspect the resulting output and confirm the content you care about is present.

For example, on a system where the executable is available as google-chrome:

google-chrome --headless --dump-dom --timeout=10000 'https://example.com' > rendered.html

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Replace google-chrome with the Chrome executable name or full path on your system. The command writes the serialized document to rendered.html. The timeout bounds waiting; it is not a guarantee that an application-specific asynchronous task has finished. If a page populates content after a user action, a timer, or a particular API call, check the output for that content rather than treating a fixed delay as proof of completion.

A DOM dump is useful for examining generated elements, text, and attributes. It is not a guarantee that stylesheet and script files are embedded, that linked resources will be available later, or that JavaScript variables and other in-memory runtime state can be restored. If you need those layers, capture them separately.

Save a page and its resources as MHTML

Chrome’s documented single-file archive route is its extension pageCapture API. The extension must declare the pageCapture permission, then call chrome.pageCapture.saveAsMHTML() for the selected tab. Chrome describes MHTML as packaging the page and its resources into one file.

At a high level, the extension manifest includes the permission:

  • THE PERFECT VIEW: The 178/178 degree extra wide viewing angle prevents the shifting of colors when viewed from an offset angle, so you always get consistent colors

The extension then invokes the API for a tab, for example from an extension context that has the relevant tab ID:

chrome.pageCapture.saveAsMHTML({ tabId }, (mhtmlBlob) => { /* save the returned Blob */ });

The callback supplies the MHTML data as a Blob; your extension needs to save or otherwise handle that Blob. Consult the Chrome pageCapture API reference for the exact API contract and extension context details.

MHTML is a browser archive, not an export of source code in its original project layout. Chrome documents a security restriction: an MHTML file can be loaded only from the file system and only in the main frame. The API reference does not establish that every authenticated page, dynamic resource, or cross-origin frame will replay perfectly, so verify the archive against the specific page and purpose.

Export a HAR to see what the browser requested

Use a HAR when the question is about which requests occurred, which resources failed, or what the browser received from the network. In Chrome, open DevTools, select Network, record the relevant page load, then use the Network panel’s HAR export option to save the captured request list.

Chrome’s default sanitized HAR export excludes sensitive headers such as Cookie, Set-Cookie, and Authorization. To include sensitive data, enable “Allow to generate HAR with sensitive data” in Network preferences and choose the sensitive-data export option. A HAR produced that way may contain credentials or session information: protect it, inspect it, and remove sensitive material before sharing unless it is specifically needed.

A HAR helps explain why a stylesheet, script, or image did not load, but it is not a self-contained copy of the rendered page. Pair it with a DOM dump or visual capture when you also need to show what the browser constructed or displayed. See Chrome’s Network features reference for the export and sensitive-data controls.

Capture DOM structure and selected computed styles

For machine-readable structure that includes layout and selected computed style properties, investigate the Chrome DevTools Protocol method DOMSnapshot.captureSnapshot. Its documented snapshot contains a flattened DOM tree and layout data, with computed styles selected through a caller-provided whitelist.

The protocol documentation says the snapshot covers iframes, template contents, and imported documents, and that shadow DOM is flattened. This is useful when you need to process a structured representation programmatically—for example, to inspect text and layout-related values across a page—rather than view a screenshot or reopen an archived page. It remains protocol data, not an MHTML file or a record of every original CSS declaration. See the DOMSnapshot protocol reference for method parameters and returned fields.

Use Playwright for screenshots, PDFs, and page content

Playwright’s Page API can retrieve page content, take screenshots, and generate PDFs. Use a screenshot when the deliverable is visual evidence; use a PDF when a document-like output is more useful. Playwright’s PDF generation uses print CSS by default. If you need screen styling, call page.emulateMedia({ media: 'screen' }) before page.pdf().

A minimal Node.js example using Playwright to save a rendered page’s DOM and a screenshot is:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

const { chromium } = require('playwright');
(async () => {
 const browser = await chromium.launch({ headless: true });
 const page = await browser.newPage();
 await page.goto('https://example.com');
 const html = await page.content();
 require('node:fs').writeFileSync('rendered.html', html);
 await page.screenshot({ path: 'page.png', fullPage: true });
 await browser.close();
})();

For a PDF that uses screen media, set the media before generating the file:

await page.emulateMedia({ media: 'screen' });
await page.pdf({ path: 'page.pdf' });

page.content() gives you the page’s current document content; it is not a packaged copy of all external files or a restoration of browser runtime state. Choose the artifact based on whether you need structure, appearance, or network evidence. The Playwright Page API documents content, screenshot, and PDF behavior.

How to account for CSS and JavaScript explicitly

  • Original files or loaded responses: use network evidence such as a HAR to identify requests and investigate their responses. Keep in mind the HAR is not a standalone archive.
  • Styles applied to rendered elements: a DOM snapshot can include selected computed styles, but those values are not the same as all original stylesheet source.
  • Page plus resources in one browser file: use Chrome’s MHTML extension API, with the documented file-system/main-frame loading restriction in mind.
  • Markup after scripts have run: use Headless --dump-dom or a browser automation content method.
  • Visual result: capture an image or PDF, recognizing that PDF output may use print rather than screen styling.

For a thorough investigation, keep artifacts distinct and label them accurately—for example, “post-script DOM,” “HAR network log,” and “screenshot”—instead of calling all of them a complete copy of the page.

Timing, reliability, and handling

Wait for content that matters

Modern pages may continue to change after the initial document load. Chrome Headless offers a timeout for DOM, screenshot, and PDF capture; it limits waiting, but does not establish that a site’s own asynchronous work is complete. With automation for a known site, wait for a meaningful condition, such as the element or content your task depends on, then inspect the output. A delay is a maximum wait, not a page-specific readiness signal.

Verify the actual output

  • Check that the expected text or element appears in the DOM dump.
  • For a screenshot or PDF, inspect the resulting file for missing sections or unintended print styling.
  • For resource problems, review HAR entries and statuses alongside the rendered result.
  • For an MHTML archive, test the file in the intended Chrome context rather than assuming it behaves like an ordinary HTML file.

Protect captured data

Sanitized HAR export is the safer default for sharing. A sensitive-data HAR can expose authentication-related headers; restrict access and inspect the file before sending it. DOM captures and screenshots can also contain private page content, so treat them according to the sensitivity of the source page.

Common problems and fixes

The DOM dump misses content that appears in the browser

The page may populate that content after the capture timing, or it may require an interaction. Increase the bounded wait as a first check, then inspect whether the page needs a site-specific readiness condition or user action. A larger timeout alone does not prove the page finished rendering.

The HTML file opens but looks unstyled

A DOM serialization does not necessarily embed linked CSS. Capture resource/network evidence or use MHTML when you need a bundled browser archive. If the goal is simply to show the appearance, use a screenshot or PDF.

The PDF differs from the screen

Playwright PDF output uses print CSS by default. Call page.emulateMedia({ media: 'screen' }) before page.pdf() when screen styling is the intended output.

An MHTML file does not open like a regular page

Chrome documents that MHTML can only be loaded from the file system and only in the main frame. Open it from the file system in the supported context; do not expect ordinary web hosting or embedding behavior from that format.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A shared HAR exposes more than expected

If the export included sensitive data, it may contain cookies or authorization headers. Prefer sanitized export for routine sharing; if sensitive export was necessary, inspect and secure the file before distribution.

If you need a visual capture rather than the underlying DOM or network record, ScreenshotNeo is a screenshot API and MCP server for developers. One GET request returns an image or PDF. For example, save a WebP capture with cURL:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://example.com -o shot.webp

See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for request options. It accepts consent banners before capture and removes 60+ known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; those steps can be turned off. Bot checks/CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers identify the page verdict and whether the request was billed. An MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents and MCP clients. Which capture should you keep?

Keep the artifact that answers the question you need to revisit: a DOM dump for post-script structure, MHTML for a bundled browser page, HAR for network activity, DOMSnapshot data for selected structure and computed styles, or a screenshot/PDF for appearance. If the question spans several layers, combine the relevant artifacts and record which is which.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a rendered DOM dump include the original CSS and JavaScript files?

No. It serializes the post-script document structure; it does not promise to embed external resources or preserve runtime state.

Can I use a HAR file as an offline website copy?

No. HAR records network activity; it is not a self-contained rendered-page archive.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is MHTML ordinary standalone HTML?

No. Chrome describes it as a bundled page archive and documents that it can be loaded only from the file system and only in the main frame.
