What “without canvas” means
A browser screenshot is taken after layout, fonts, CSS, images, and scripts have been rendered. The browser copies its rendered output to an image. By contrast, html2canvas walks the DOM, reads styles, and builds a new representation. Its documentation says it “does not actually take a screenshot of the page” and can render only the CSS it understands. That distinction matters for complex layouts, cross-origin assets, animations, and browser-specific behavior.

Playwright: the general-purpose solution
Install Playwright and its browser binaries in your project, then capture the page after navigation:

Chromium’s DevTools Protocol
If your application already speaks CDP, the Chromium Page domain exposes Page.captureScreenshot. It is a lower-level alternative to Playwright’s convenience API. The protocol reference is a rolling “tot” schema, so match the command and parameters to the Chromium version you deploy. CDP is appropriate when you need protocol-level integration; starting a new project is generally simpler with Playwright or Puppeteer.

Puppeteer automates Chrome and Firefox through Chrome DevTools Protocol and WebDriver BiDi, and its documented use cases include screenshots and PDFs. A minimal capture is:

Browser extensions: capture the visible tab
For extension code, the html2canvas FAQ recommends native tab APIs: chrome.tabs.captureVisibleTab() for Chrome, Edge and Opera, or browser.tabs.captureVisibleTab() for Firefox. These APIs capture what is visible in the tab. Do not assume they create a full-page image; consult the current browser vendor documentation for permissions, user-gesture rules and any full-page facility available in your target browser.

- Unsupported CSS: properties the library does not implement may be missing or approximated.
- Cross-origin images: drawing an image from another origin can taint the canvas unless the server and request policy allow it.
- Cross-origin iframes: inaccessible frame contents cannot be read and reconstructed.
- Oversized canvases: browser canvas limits can produce blank or partial output, sometimes without a useful error.
- Browser-only runtime: the library depends on
window,documentand computed styles, so it does not run directly in Node.js.
If fidelity to the actual rendered page is the requirement, these are reasons to switch to a browser screenshot rather than add more canvas workarounds.

Fonts or layout differ between runs
Pin browser versions, set an explicit viewport and device scale factor, wait for fonts and data, and disable animations or mask dynamic locators.
Capture times out
Check the URL from the same network environment, raise the navigation timeout only when justified, and wait on a concrete readiness selector instead of unlimited network idle.
Canvas output is blank or partial
Reduce dimensions and inspect cross-origin images and unsupported CSS. If the requirement is a real browser rendering, replace the canvas approach with Playwright, Puppeteer or a hosted browser screenshot.
