Chrome DevTools can save the visible viewport, a full page, one selected element, or a rectangular area. For a single image of an entire page, open Device mode, choose More options, then Capture a full size screenshot. Use the other workflows below when you need a component, a cropped region, or screenshots tied to page-loading or performance activity.

Choose the capture that matches what you need

DevTools has separate screenshot workflows for different scopes. The most common mistake is choosing a viewport capture when you meant to include content below the fold. Use this table to pick the right one before opening menus.

Your goal DevTools workflow What it captures
Save what is currently visible Device mode → More options → Capture screenshot The emulated viewport as currently shown.
Save the whole page Device mode → More options → Capture a full size screenshot Page content beyond the visible viewport.
Save a component, card, or other DOM node Select it in Elements → Command Menu → Capture node screenshot The selected node as an image.
Save only a chosen rectangle Inspect Element Mode → hold the platform modifier while selecting The selected portion of the viewport.
See visual changes as a page loads Network settings → Capture screenshots → reload with Network focused Thumbnails associated with loading activity.
Pair visual frames with performance data Performance → enable Screenshots → record A screenshot of each frame during the recording.

The first four workflows save a particular view or region. Network and Performance screenshots instead help you inspect when visual changes happen.

Capture the visible viewport or a full-page screenshot

Use Device mode for a static screenshot of the page. Its two capture commands differ in scope: Capture screenshot saves the viewport currently on screen, while Capture a full size screenshot includes content outside it. Chrome’s Device mode documentation describes both options.

  1. Open the page you want to capture, then open Chrome DevTools. If the Device mode toolbar is not visible, enable Device mode.
  2. In the Device mode toolbar, open More options.
  3. For the visible viewport, choose Capture screenshot. For content below the fold as well, choose Capture a full size screenshot.
  4. If you want a device outline in the image, enable Show device frame before capturing.

Choose full-size capture when page completeness matters—for example, when you need to review a long layout without stitching several viewport images together. Choose the viewport command when the visible, possibly emulated screen is the subject. A device frame is a presentation choice; it is not needed to capture page content.

What “full size” means here

It means the capture includes page content outside the currently visible viewport, rather than just the portion on screen. It is not the same as a screenshot of a single viewport with a device outline. If the result looks like only the visible screen, check that you chose Capture a full size screenshot, not Capture screenshot.

Capture one element from the page

For a header, card, image, or another individual component, select its DOM node in Elements and invoke the node-capture command. This avoids saving the entire page and cropping it afterward.

  1. Open DevTools and select the Elements panel.
  2. Select the element you want to capture. If needed, use the element picker to identify the corresponding node on the page.
  3. Open the Command Menu.
  4. Type node, then choose Capture node screenshot.
  5. DevTools downloads an image of the selected node.

Chrome’s Chrome 62 DevTools announcement documents node and area screenshots. It specifically described node capture including content below the fold, but that announcement is historical; do not assume every current Chrome build handles every unusually sized or dynamic node identically. If the output is incomplete, check that the intended node—not a child or parent—was selected and try the capture again.

Capture a selected rectangular area

Use area capture when you want a particular region of the viewport but there is no single DOM element that matches the crop. The modifier is different on Mac and Windows/Linux.

  1. Enter Inspect Element Mode by clicking Inspect, or press Command+Shift+C on Mac or Control+Shift+C on Windows/Linux.
  2. Hold Command on Mac or Control on Windows/Linux, then select the desired region in the viewport.
  3. Release the mouse to capture the selected area; DevTools downloads the result.

Do not confuse the shortcut to enter Inspect Element Mode with the modifier held while selecting the region: the first uses Command or Control plus Shift+C, and the selection uses Command or Control. The documented steps are in the Chrome 62 announcement.

Or skip the browser setup

If you need screenshots in a script rather than manually from DevTools, ScreenshotNeo offers a one-request screenshot API and an MCP server for AI agents. The cURL request below captures a page; see the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for the endpoint options.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie and consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; you can turn each step off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and the response reports the page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server exposes take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.

Capture screenshots while a page loads

For a sequence of visual checkpoints associated with loading activity, use the Network panel rather than taking a single static screenshot. Enable its screenshot capture setting, then reload the page while Network is focused.

  1. Open DevTools and select the Network panel.
  2. Open Network panel settings and enable Capture screenshots.
  3. Keep the Network panel focused and reload the page.
  4. Inspect the screenshot thumbnails associated with loading activity. Hover a thumbnail to mark its capture point on the Overview timeline.

Clicking a thumbnail filters out requests after that screenshot; double-clicking zooms the thumbnail. This makes the thumbnails useful for relating a visual state to network activity. It is distinct from the Device mode command that saves one viewport or full-page image. See Chrome’s Network features reference.

Capture frames during a performance recording

Use the Performance panel when you want screenshots alongside a performance trace, not merely a set of loading thumbnails. Enable the screenshot option before recording so the capture is part of that recording.

Troubleshoot common capture problems

The screenshot shows only the current screen

You likely chose Capture screenshot, which is the viewport command. Open Device mode’s More options menu and choose Capture a full size screenshot to include off-screen page content.

The wrong element was captured—or no node image appeared

Return to Elements and select the intended node before opening the Command Menu. Type node and choose the exact Capture node screenshot command. A nearby child or parent node may have a different size and content from the component you intended.

No screenshots appear in the Network panel

Check that Capture screenshots is enabled in Network settings, then reload while the Network panel is focused. The documented workflow ties the thumbnails to a page reload and loading activity.

The Performance recording has no frames

Enable the Screenshots checkbox in Performance before recording. The option is for screenshots during a recording; enabling it after the recording does not add frames to that completed capture.
