To capture a whole web page, use the browser’s full-page screenshot option. To get more image pixels for the same page layout, increase the device pixel ratio (DPR). These solve different problems, and you can use both: in Chrome, set a DPR in Device Mode and choose Capture a full size screenshot; in Firefox, run :screenshot --fullpage --dpr 2 in the Web Console. Check the saved image’s dimensions and content rather than assuming a particular output size.

What “high resolution” means for a web page screenshot

A screenshot is a raster image made of pixels. Two separate choices affect what you get:

  • Page coverage: a viewport screenshot captures only the part currently visible in the browser. A full-page screenshot also captures content beyond the viewport.
  • Pixel density: device pixel ratio (DPR) controls how many screen pixels are used to draw each CSS pixel. A higher DPR can produce more image pixels for the same CSS layout.

A tall full-page image is not necessarily a high-density image. Likewise, raising DPR does not make a viewport capture include the rest of the document. Chrome defines DPR as the ratio between physical hardware-screen pixels and logical CSS pixels; see Chrome DevTools Device Mode. Firefox’s screenshot command also accepts a DPR value, described in Mozilla’s DevTools screenshot documentation.

How to take a full-page screenshot in Chrome

Use Chrome DevTools for a one-time capture

  1. Open the page and put it into the state you want to capture. If content appears only after a click, scroll, or other interaction, make it appear first.
  2. Open Chrome DevTools and turn on Device Mode.
  3. In Device Mode, open More options and choose Capture a full size screenshot for the entire page. Choose Capture screenshot if you want only the emulated viewport.
  4. Open the downloaded image and inspect its top and bottom, detail, and dimensions.

Chrome documents the full-size and viewport options in its Device Mode guide. Device Mode can also emulate viewport dimensions and device types, which is useful when you need a mobile layout rather than a desktop one.

Increase DPR in Device Mode

If the capture needs more pixels for the same layout, add and select a DPR value in Device Mode before taking the screenshot. Use the smallest value that satisfies the intended display or print use, then inspect the saved file. The cited Chrome guide does not establish a universal maximum or guarantee exact output dimensions for every page and capture path.

How to screenshot a full webpage in Firefox

Use Firefox’s screenshot interface

Firefox’s screenshot interface offers Save full page and Save visible. Choose the former for content beyond the current window or the latter for only the visible section. You can save the result as an image or copy it to the clipboard. See Mozilla Support’s Firefox screenshot instructions.

Set full-page coverage and DPR from the Web Console

For a full-page image at DPR 2, enter this in the Firefox Web Console:

:screenshot --fullpage --dpr 2

Replace 2 with the DPR you need. The --fullpage option includes parts of the page outside the current window bounds. Firefox documents DPR values above 1 as zoomed-in images and values below 1 as zoomed-out. Its screenshot command can also accept a filename, a delay, and a CSS selector. For example:

:screenshot --fullpage --dpr 2 page.png

When capturing batches, use a unique filename for each image: reusing a filename overwrites the previous capture. Full command details are in Mozilla’s screenshot documentation.

How to capture a page repeatedly with Chrome Headless

Chrome Headless supports --screenshot and --window-size for repeatable captures of a chosen viewport. The documented simple flag writes screenshot.png in the current working directory. For example, a command in the documented format is:

chrome --headless --screenshot --window-size=1280,900 https://example.com

Use the Chrome executable name and invocation appropriate to your installation. The cited Headless documentation describes the basic screenshot flag as a viewport capture; it notes that full-page screenshots require more than the simple flag. Do not assume this older documentation’s exact command example is guaranteed unchanged across Chrome releases. See Chrome Developers’ Headless Chrome documentation.

How to get a sharper result without capturing the wrong page

  1. Load the intended state. Wait for the page and trigger any content that only appears after an interaction. Official browser documentation does not guarantee how every dynamic page behaves.
  2. Choose viewport or full page. Use the full-page setting only when you need content outside the visible window.
  3. Choose DPR for pixel density. Increase it only when you need more raster pixels for the same CSS layout.
  4. Capture and inspect. Check the actual dimensions and file size, then review the top, bottom, text, and fine detail at the size at which the image will be used.
  5. Adjust if necessary. If content is absent, duplicated, or unexpectedly unloaded, change the page state or capture approach and take another image.

Very tall pages at high DPR can create large images. The browser documentation cited here does not publish a universal dimension limit, memory limit, or quality benchmark, so avoid assuming one setting will work identically on every page. Sticky headers, animations, lazy-loaded content, and embedded frames may affect the result; inspect the image rather than treating a successful save as proof that every element was captured correctly.

Troubleshooting common screenshot problems

The image shows only the current screen

You likely used the viewport option. In Chrome choose Capture a full size screenshot, not Capture screenshot; in Firefox choose Save full page or use :screenshot --fullpage.

The file is tall but text still looks soft

Page coverage and pixel density are different. A full-page image can be tall at ordinary DPR. Raise DPR in Chrome Device Mode or use Firefox’s --dpr parameter, then check the saved pixel dimensions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Some content is missing or repeated

Dynamic content, lazy loading, animations, sticky elements, and embedded frames can behave differently during capture. Put the page into the desired state first, allow needed content to appear, and inspect the result. The official documentation cited above does not guarantee compatibility for every site.

The image is unexpectedly large

A full page combined with a higher DPR can produce a large raster image. Reduce the DPR to the lowest value that meets your need, or capture only the viewport if you do not need the entire document.

A Firefox batch capture replaced an earlier image

The screenshot command overwrites a previous capture when the same filename is reused. Assign a distinct filename to each capture.

A simple Headless command does not produce a full-page image

The documented --screenshot and --window-size approach is for a chosen viewport; Chrome’s Headless documentation says full-page capture takes additional work. Use Chrome DevTools for a one-time full-page image, or build a more involved automation workflow.

Frequently asked questions

How do I change screenshot DPI?

For browser screenshots, the relevant control is usually DPR rather than a printer-style DPI setting. Chrome offers a DPR control in Device Mode; Firefox supports --dpr N with :screenshot.

Is a screenshot a reliable record of page text and links?

A screenshot records visual appearance as an image. If you need searchable text or link data, an image may not meet that requirement.
