Greenshot’s documented full-page, scrolling capture is for web pages open in Internet Explorer: open the page, then use Ctrl+Shift+Print or Greenshot’s Capture Internet Explorer command. Alt+Print captures only the visible active window; it does not scroll through an arbitrary window or make Chrome and Firefox pages full-length. Greenshot’s official help describes its Internet Explorer mode as creating a screenshot of a web page open in that browser, and its product page specifies complete scrolling pages from Internet Explorer.

Capture a full scrolling page in Internet Explorer

Greenshot’s scrolling-page workflow is a browser capture, not a general-purpose way to stitch together the contents of any window. The documented target is a web page open in Internet Explorer. When that browser and Greenshot can run in your environment, follow these steps:

  1. Open the page in Internet Explorer. Navigate to the page you want to capture and, if required, sign in or load the content you need before starting capture.
  2. Start the capture. Either use Greenshot’s notification-area (system tray) icon and choose Capture Internet Explorer, or press Ctrl+Shift+Print to capture the active Internet Explorer tab.
  3. Select the tab if prompted. With the menu workflow, choose the Internet Explorer tab containing the page.
  4. Let Greenshot finish the page capture. A full-page image can take longer than a visible-window capture because it covers content beyond the initial viewport. Wait for the capture to complete before switching tabs or closing the browser.
  5. Choose what to do with the result. Use Greenshot’s editor or the output destination configured for your installation to annotate, save, copy, print, or export the capture.

Greenshot’s product description calls this capturing “complete (scrolling) web pages from Internet Explorer.” That qualification matters: the documented workflow does not establish a matching one-step full-page mode for Chrome, Firefox, or arbitrary application windows.

What “scrolling window” means in Greenshot

Full-page browser capture

The Internet Explorer command is the relevant option when you want the content of a web page extending below the visible browser area. It is the only scrolling-page mode named in Greenshot’s documentation described here. It is not interchangeable with selecting a window or capturing the screen.

Visible active-window capture

Press Alt+Print to capture the currently active window as it appears on screen. This is useful for a dialog, application window, or the currently visible portion of a browser, but it does not automatically scroll down the page. A result that omits content below the fold is expected when you use this shortcut.

Interactive window selection

Greenshot’s interactive capture can let you select a window. During capture, Space switches between region and window mode. These are selection modes for visible screen content; they are not a substitute for the Internet Explorer full-page command.

Greenshot shortcuts for the capture you need

Shortcut Documented capture Use it when
Print Capture a region You want to draw or select a screen area.
Shift+Print Capture the last region You want to repeat a previous region capture.
Alt+Print Capture the active window You need the visible window, not a page that scrolls beyond it.
Ctrl+Print Capture fullscreen You need the full visible display.
Ctrl+Shift+Print Capture the active Internet Explorer tab You want the documented Greenshot full-page browser capture.

These shortcuts are the documented defaults in the help information summarized here. If a shortcut does not start Greenshot on your computer, another application or a changed Greenshot configuration may be using it.

Browser support and current limitations

Greenshot’s official documentation specifically names Internet Explorer for complete scrolling-page capture. Its standard capture-mode list also includes region, last region, window, fullscreen, and Internet Explorer capture; it does not document an equivalent one-step scrolling capture for Chrome, Firefox, or an arbitrary application window. A historical Greenshot project discussion notes the difficulty of implementing scrolling capture across arbitrary scrollbars and applications. That history helps explain why a normal window capture should not be assumed to scroll, but it does not prove what a particular current build can do.

Internet Explorer is retired in current versions of Windows for most consumer use, and availability or compatibility depends on the Windows edition and environment. The Greenshot material cited here does not establish that its Internet Explorer capture works in every currently supported Windows setup, nor does it confirm a full-page workflow in Microsoft Edge’s Internet Explorer mode. Treat the IE workflow as the documented method, not a guarantee that the browser is available on your machine. If you cannot open the target in Internet Explorer, use the browser’s own full-page capture feature or a separately verified tool suited to your browser and page.

Configure Greenshot’s capture shortcuts

Greenshot’s FAQ identifies configuration entries including WindowHotkey and IEHotkey. If you need to change these manually, exit Greenshot first, edit its configuration file, and restart the application so the settings take effect. The exact configuration-file location and file format are not established here; avoid editing a guessed path or changing unrelated entries. If you only need a different shortcut, check Greenshot’s own configuration options before editing by hand.

Output, annotations, and choosing the right capture

Once the capture is complete, Greenshot can send it to its editor or an output destination, where you can annotate or save, copy, print, or export it. Pick the capture mode before editing: annotations can clarify a screenshot, but they cannot recover page content that was never captured.

  • Use Internet Explorer capture for the documented scrolling web-page workflow.
  • Use Alt+Print for the visible active window, such as an application screen or a browser viewport.
  • Use Print for a selected region, or Ctrl+Print for the visible fullscreen display.
  • For Chrome, Firefox, or another app’s long content, verify that your chosen browser or capture tool explicitly supports full-page or scrolling capture. A normal window screenshot is not evidence of that support.

Or skip the browser setup

If you need a browser-based capture without setting up Greenshot’s Internet Explorer workflow, ScreenshotNeo offers a screenshot API. Its one-request cURL example is:

Troubleshooting Greenshot scrolling captures

Ctrl+Shift+Print does nothing

  • Confirm Greenshot is running in the notification area.
  • Check whether another application has claimed the same shortcut or whether the shortcut was changed in Greenshot’s settings.
  • Try the tray-icon menu and its Capture Internet Explorer command to distinguish a shortcut conflict from a missing browser workflow.

The result shows only the visible portion of the page

Check that you used Capture Internet Explorer or Ctrl+Shift+Print while targeting an Internet Explorer tab. Alt+Print is a visible active-window capture, so it will not produce a scrolling page.

You are using Chrome, Firefox, or another application

The documented Greenshot help does not establish an equivalent scrolling mode for these targets. Use a native full-page capture feature in the browser if available, or select a separately verified alternative that explicitly supports your browser and page type. Do not expect window selection or fullscreen capture to stitch together off-screen content.

The Internet Explorer option is unavailable

The documented command depends on Internet Explorer. Browser availability varies by Windows version and configuration, and the documentation cited here does not establish compatibility with every current setup. If IE is unavailable, switch to a browser-specific full-page workflow or another verified capture method rather than relying on the ordinary window shortcut.

A manual shortcut change did not take effect

Exit Greenshot before editing its configuration file, check the relevant entry (such as IEHotkey or WindowHotkey), save the change, and restart Greenshot. The precise path is installation-dependent and is not specified here, so use the configuration location for your installation rather than assuming one.

Cost and reliability considerations

Greenshot is free and open source, and its capture and annotation workflow is suited to local screen capture when its supported capture mode matches the task. The documented Internet Explorer route has a browser dependency; that makes it a poor assumption for a modern-browser workflow unless you have verified it in your own environment. A native browser capture avoids that specific Greenshot dependency, while a screenshot API is useful when captures need to be requested programmatically. These approaches solve different problems: Greenshot is a desktop capture application, while ScreenshotNeo’s example is a remote API request that needs an API key and a network connection.

For any method, validate the final image before using it as a record: confirm the intended URL or window, that required content loaded, and that the capture includes the needed length of page. For dynamic pages, sign-in flows, or content loaded after scrolling, check the selected tool’s documented support and inspect the output rather than assuming that a successful capture contains every element.
