The right command depends on your operating system and, on Linux, whether your desktop is using X11 or Wayland. For an X11 desktop, ImageMagick can save the full root window with magick import -window root screen.png. GNOME users can use gnome-screenshot for a screen, window or selected area. Windows offers an interactive Snipping Tool protocol, a .NET screen-copy API for application code, and Microsoft GDK’s wdcapture.exe for documented SDR/HDR command-line capture. macOS syntax is version-specific; use the screencapture manual installed on your Mac rather than copying an unverified flag list.
Choose the capture method before you type a command
A “command-line screenshot” can mean three different things:
- Unattended desktop capture: a command saves pixels directly to a file, suitable for scripts and scheduled jobs.
- Interactive capture: a command opens a selection overlay and waits for you to choose a rectangle, window or freeform shape.
- Application code: a program calls a screen-capture API and writes the resulting bitmap.
Use the following decision table to avoid running a command that cannot work in your session.
| Environment | Best-documented option here | Capture style | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Linux with an X server | ImageMagick import |
Full root window or interactive selection | These commands target X server screens; do not assume Wayland compatibility. |
| Linux GNOME | gnome-screenshot |
Whole screen, active window or selected area | Flags can vary by distribution and release; check the installed help. |
| Windows desktop | Snipping Tool protocol | Interactive rectangle, freeform or window selection | It starts a UI; it is not evidence of a silent file-save command. |
| Windows application | Graphics.CopyFromScreen |
Programmatic pixel copy | Use from application code, such as Windows Forms, rather than as a shell built-in. |
| Windows with Microsoft GDK | wdcapture.exe |
Command-line Windows Graphics Capture | GDK context and availability apply; verify installation before relying on it. |
| macOS | Local screencapture manual |
Version-dependent | Exact current flags were not established here, so do not copy an unverified syntax. |

magick import -window root screen.png
-window root selects the X server’s root window, and screen.png is the output file. The official ImageMagick example uses PostScript, but import writes other image formats when the filename identifies the desired format. Choose a path you can write to, such as $HOME/Pictures/screen.png.
This captures the X screen visible to the process. It is not a universal Linux command: a Wayland session may not expose an X server screen for import to read. If the command reports that it cannot open a display, confirm that the shell is running inside the graphical session and that ImageMagick can reach that session’s X server.
Select a window or rectangular area interactively
Run:
magick import selection.png
ImageMagick prompts you to click or drag a selection. You can also select a window by clicking it when prompted. The resulting file is written when the selection is completed.
What the X11 root-window option actually includes
ImageMagick documents root-window capture through its -screen and root-window options. The result can include portions of other windows that cover the selected window, and independent menus or popups can be captured. That behavior is useful when you need what is currently composited on the X desktop, but it is different from asking an application for its private backing buffer. See the ImageMagick command-line options documentation for the option semantics.
Useful checks when ImageMagick fails
- Run
magick -versionto confirm the executable is installed and identify the build. - Check that the shell belongs to the logged-in graphical session; a remote, service or elevated shell may not have access to the display.
- Try the interactive command first. If it also cannot open a display, the problem is session access rather than the output format.
- If the desktop is Wayland-only, use a capture utility intended for that compositor or switch to an application/API approach; do not present the X11 command as a Wayland solution.
Linux GNOME: screen, window, area and delay
The Debian unstable gnome-screenshot(1) manual describes these modes:
gnome-screenshotcaptures the whole screen by default.gnome-screenshot -wor--windowcaptures the active window.gnome-screenshot -aor--arealets you select an area.gnome-screenshot -d SECONDSor--delay=SECONDSwaits before capturing, where that option is present in the installed version.
For example:
gnome-screenshot -w
gnome-screenshot -a
gnome-screenshot -d 5
The utility chooses a default filename and location unless you provide the output options supported by your build. Because the cited manual is for Debian unstable, run gnome-screenshot --help on your own machine before putting a flag into a script. Distribution packages can expose a different option set or version.

Making GNOME captures scriptable
Use an explicit destination only after confirming its spelling in local help. Keep the command in the same graphical login as the target desktop; running it from a headless SSH connection does not automatically grant access to the GNOME session. For repeatable jobs, record the utility version, desktop session and output path alongside the script.

Windows: interactive Snipping Tool, application code and GDK
Snipping Tool protocol for an interactive overlay
Microsoft documents launching Snipping Tool with the ms-screenclip: protocol. It supports rectangle, freeform and window modes, and the URI requires exactly one mode parameter. Use Microsoft’s Launch Snipping Tool documentation for the current URI spelling and mode values for your Windows release.
This route opens the capture interface and waits for a person to finish the selection. It should not be described as a background command that silently writes a predetermined filename. If your automation requires a file with no UI, use application code or a capture tool designed for unattended operation instead.
Capture pixels from a Windows Forms application with .NET
For software you control, Microsoft’s Graphics.CopyFromScreen API copies pixels from a screen rectangle to a drawing surface. This minimal Windows Forms example captures a 1,920 × 1,080 rectangle beginning at the primary screen’s origin and saves a PNG:
using System.Drawing;
using System.Drawing.Imaging;
class Capture
{
static void Main()
{
const int width = 1920;
const int height = 1080;
using var bitmap = new Bitmap(width, height, PixelFormat.Format32bppArgb);
using (var graphics = Graphics.FromImage(bitmap))
{
graphics.CopyFromScreen(0, 0, 0, 0,
new Size(width, height),
CopyPixelOperation.SourceCopy);
}
bitmap.Save("screen.png", ImageFormat.Png);
}
}
The rectangle must match the display coordinates and dimensions you intend to capture. Multi-monitor layouts can have negative coordinates or a different virtual-screen size, so hard-coding 1,920 × 1,080 is only an example. In production code, obtain the display bounds from your Windows UI framework and handle permission, session and scaling behavior appropriate to the application.
Microsoft GDK’s wdcapture.exe
Microsoft’s Screen Capture (wdcapture.exe) documentation covers a PC command-line utility built on Windows Graphics Capture APIs. Its documented output is PNG for SDR and JXR for HDR. The tool is described in the Microsoft Game Development Kit context, so verify that the GDK and executable are installed before recommending it to a general Windows machine. Use the command syntax and switches in that version’s documentation rather than assuming the executable is part of ordinary Windows.

macOS: verify the installed screencapture interface
The exact current macOS screencapture flags were not established by the documentation used for this article. macOS releases can change command behavior, and a command copied from an older blog may silently fail or capture the wrong target. Open Terminal and read the manual page shipped with your system:
man screencapture
Use the syntax and permissions described there for your macOS version. This is safer than presenting a guessed command as universal. Test the command while logged into the desktop that should be captured; a shell running without access to that user session cannot produce the same result as an interactive Terminal window.

“Unable to open display” or a blank ImageMagick file
The process cannot reach the X server, or the target desktop is not an X11 session. Run the command from the logged-in graphical session, confirm ImageMagick is installed, and identify whether the desktop is Wayland. Do not solve a Wayland mismatch by repeatedly changing the output extension; the display protocol is the issue.
GNOME flags are rejected
Your distribution may ship a different gnome-screenshot release than the Debian unstable manual. Run gnome-screenshot --help and adapt the script to the options actually installed. Keep a version check in deployment documentation.

Windows opens a selection UI when automation needs a file
That is the documented Snipping Tool behavior. Replace it with a program using Graphics.CopyFromScreen, or use wdcapture.exe only where the Microsoft GDK requirement is satisfied. Neither choice should be presented as a universal Windows shell command without checking its environment.
The .NET image is the wrong size or monitor
CopyFromScreen copies the rectangle you provide. Discover the actual virtual-screen bounds in your application instead of assuming 1,920 × 1,080, and account for multi-monitor coordinates and display scaling before saving the bitmap.

The website capture is clean locally but not in an API response
Check the response’s X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers, then adjust wait conditions, cookies, custom headers, user agent, geolocation or blocked resources. A bot check, blank page, timeout or failed load is not billed by ScreenshotNeo, while a cache hit is also free.
The command works manually but fails in a scheduled job
Scheduled jobs often run outside the interactive desktop session. Record the OS, display protocol, utility version, output directory and permissions. For website images, use an HTTP API instead of depending on a logged-in monitor session.
Operational notes for reliable scripts
- Make the target explicit: distinguish full screen, active window and user-selected area in the script name and documentation.
- Use deterministic paths: write to an absolute path and check that the file exists after the command exits.
- Preserve format requirements: use PNG when lossless desktop text matters; use the GDK-documented JXR output when HDR is the requirement.
- Capture the environment: OS release, Linux display protocol, desktop utility version and monitor layout affect reproducibility.
- Separate local and web capture: desktop commands copy pixels already on a display; ScreenshotNeo renders a URL and exposes verdict and billing headers for each response.
FAQ
Can one command work unchanged on Windows, Linux and macOS?
No. The operating systems expose different capture interfaces, and Linux additionally varies by display protocol and desktop environment. Choose a platform-specific utility or place your own abstraction around the appropriate API.
Does ImageMagick’s import capture Wayland?
The documented commands target an X server screen. They should not be described as a general Wayland capture method; verify the session and use a compositor-appropriate tool when X11 access is unavailable.
Is Snipping Tool suitable for a CI job?
The documented protocol launches an interactive capture mode, so it is intended for a user-driven selection rather than a silent, unattended file export. Use application code or a purpose-built capture utility for CI.
Quick Recap
What should I use when the target is a URL rather than my monitor?
Use a website screenshot API such as ScreenshotNeo. It loads the page itself, can remove consent banners and overlays, and reports whether the response was billable instead of relying on a logged-in desktop session.
