If you need a map image, use Google Maps Platform’s Maps Static API: it returns an image from an HTTP request that you can place in an HTML <img>. If you need a draggable, zoomable map, use the Maps JavaScript API instead. jQuery can build or insert the image URL, but it does not export a live Google map. A screenshot of a live map is a different approach and is not the documented static-image export route.
Choose the right kind of map capture
| What you need | Use | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| A fixed map image in a page, report, or email | Maps Static API | A PNG, JPEG, or GIF image generated from URL parameters |
| A map visitors can pan, zoom, or interact with | Maps JavaScript API | An interactive map rendered in the page |
| An image of a particular page as it appears in a browser | A browser screenshot service, subject to Google Maps terms and attribution rules | A screenshot of the rendered page, not an official Maps Static API export |
Use the Static API for predictable map-image output. Do not assume that drawing or displaying a map with the JavaScript API authorizes saving, caching, or reusing its contents. Google’s policies set limits on storage and scraping, with requirements that can vary by service agreement and EEA status; check the current Maps JavaScript API policies for your use case.
Get a map image with the Maps Static API
The Static API responds to an HTTPS request with an image. For a map without markers that determine the view, provide center and zoom; size is required. You also need an API key, the Maps Static API enabled, and a billing-enabled Google Cloud project. See Google’s setup and parameter documentation for current configuration details.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesEmbed the image in HTML
Replace YOUR_API_KEY with a key configured for your project. This example requests a 600-by-400 map centered on San Francisco:

<img
alt="Map centered on San Francisco"
src="https://maps.googleapis.com/maps/api/staticmap?center=San+Francisco,CA&zoom=12&size=600x400&key=YOUR_API_KEY">
Serve the image over HTTPS when your page uses HTTPS, and URL-encode parameter values that contain reserved characters. Do not put an unrestricted key into a public page. Create and restrict credentials according to Google’s platform guidance, enable the API, and review the current billing terms before deploying.
Build the URL with JavaScript
JavaScript can construct the same Static API URL and assign it to an image. URLSearchParams handles query parameter encoding:
const params = new URLSearchParams({
center: 'San Francisco,CA',
zoom: '12',
size: '600x400',
key: 'YOUR_API_KEY'
});
const image = document.querySelector('#map-image');
image.src = `https://maps.googleapis.com/maps/api/staticmap?${params}`;
image.alt = 'Map centered on San Francisco';
Use matching markup:
<img id="map-image" alt="Map centered on San Francisco">
This creates an image request; it does not take a screenshot of an already-rendered interactive map.

Build the URL with jQuery
jQuery is optional. It can serialize query parameters and set the image source, while the Static API still generates the map:
$(function () {
const params = $.param({
center: 'San Francisco,CA',
zoom: 12,
size: '600x400',
key: 'YOUR_API_KEY'
});
$('#map-image')
.attr('src', 'https://maps.googleapis.com/maps/api/staticmap?' + params)
.attr('alt', 'Map centered on San Francisco');
});
Include jQuery through the method already approved for your project and provide <img id="map-image"> in the page. Avoid adding jQuery solely for this task if native JavaScript is sufficient.
Choose dimensions, scale, zoom, and appearance
- Size and scale: Google documents a maximum
sizeof 640×640 atscale=1. Withscale=2, the geographic coverage stays the same while the returned image has twice the pixels in each dimension, up to 1280×1280. - Larger output: Requests beyond the documented default limits require contacting Google support. The documented maximum is 2048×2048, subject to review; do not assume every larger request will be approved.
- URL length: The service limits request URLs to 16,384 characters. Very long lists of markers, paths, or styles can exceed that limit.
- Zoom: Google’s approximate examples are zoom 1 for world, 5 for continent, 10 for city, 15 for streets, and 20 for buildings. Detail and available zoom vary by location. If tiles are unavailable at the requested zoom, the response may be blank.
- Map type: The documented options include roadmap, satellite, terrain, and hybrid.
- Image format: PNG, JPEG, and GIF are supported. Google describes JPEG as lossy and PNG/GIF options as lossless; choose based on the image and its intended use, not as a substitute for checking attribution or reuse rights.
The API also provides URL parameters for markers, paths, styles, and labels. Consult the current Maps Static API reference for accepted values and formatting rather than guessing complex parameter syntax.

Use the Maps JavaScript API for a live map
When the reader must pan, zoom, or use map controls, load the Maps JavaScript API rather than embedding a static image. Google’s current guide recommends considering the declarative gmp-map web component for new projects; the established approach using a div and JavaScript remains supported. Follow Google’s current guide to adding a map for the loading pattern and setup steps.

Version and channel details can change, so verify the current API reference when configuring a production project. Keep Google Maps attribution visible and attached to map content as required. A live map is for interaction, not a blanket license to capture and store map data.
Use Apps Script when the code runs in Google Apps Script
For an Apps Script project, Google provides Maps.newStaticMap() and the StaticMap class. The class can set a map’s size, center, markers, paths, format, and type. Its getMapUrl() method returns a URL; getBlob() or getMapImage() can return image data. Google states that static map URLs require an API key. See the Apps Script StaticMap reference for the methods and usage details.

If the goal is a screenshot of a page displaying a map—not a Static API map image—ScreenshotNeo can capture a webpage from one API request. A screenshot of a Google Maps page is not the same as an official map-image export, and Google’s policies still apply. The service removes supported cookie banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, timeouts, and cache hits are not billed. It also has an MCP server for AI agents, with tools including take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf.
For details, see the ScreenshotNeo API documentation. The cURL example captures a target page to a WebP file:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://www.google.com/maps/@37.7749,-122.4194,12z -o map-page.webp
The Google Maps URL is the page being captured, not a Static API image URL. Browser rendering and the resulting page content can vary. ScreenshotNeo’s Free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Sign up for ScreenshotNeo’s free plan.
Troubleshoot a missing or unexpected map
- The image is blank: Check that the request URL is valid and the requested zoom has available map tiles for that location. Try a nearby zoom level and confirm the
centerandsizevalues. - The request is denied or not configured: Confirm that the key belongs to the intended Google Cloud project, the Maps Static API is enabled, billing is enabled, and key restrictions permit the request. Check Google’s response and current setup guidance rather than exposing a less-restricted key as a workaround.
- Parameters appear ignored or malformed: Encode values containing commas, spaces, or other reserved characters. Construct the query with
URLSearchParamsor$.param()and make sure the final URL stays below 16,384 characters. - The image looks soft or is too small: Use a suitable
sizeand considerscale=2for higher pixel density within the same map coverage. Larger output has support-review limits; it is not an unlimited export setting. - A JavaScript map does not render: Check the API key, enabled API, billing setup, browser console, and the current Google loading instructions. Do not replace a failed interactive-map setup with a screenshot workaround if your application needs map controls or if your intended use would conflict with Google’s terms.
- A captured page does not show the expected map: The page may need time or interaction to render, or access may be blocked. A screenshot service captures a webpage, not a guaranteed Google Maps data export; verify the result and keep the applicable attribution and policy limits in view.
Cost, reliability, and reuse considerations
The implementation choice affects more than code. The Static API requires a key and billing-enabled project, and Google’s current prices should be checked in its billing documentation; no price rate is specified here. Its fixed image request is usually the simpler fit for a static placement, while an interactive map requires the JavaScript API and a page capable of rendering its controls.
Do not treat an image response or browser screenshot as permission to cache or republish Google map content. Google’s Maps JavaScript policies describe restrictions on pre-fetching, caching, and storage, with Place IDs exempted; they also say that persisting a Place Name for use outside the user’s session constitutes scraping. Review the current policy and applicable terms for the exact API and geography involved before designing a storage or redistribution workflow.
Frequently asked questions
Can jQuery take a screenshot of Google Maps?
jQuery does not provide a map capture or export mechanism. It can update an image element or assemble a Static API request. Capturing a rendered browser page is a separate screenshot operation and is not the documented Static API image route.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?

Do not assume so. The API’s rendering capability does not itself grant storage or reuse rights. Review the current Google Maps policies and terms for your specific service, agreement, and location.
