The most reliable way to produce a PDF of an entire webpage is to open the browser’s Print dialog, choose a PDF destination, check the preview, and save. Printing creates a conventional, paginated PDF. A browser’s “full-page screenshot” command usually creates one very tall PNG instead; use that route when you need the page to look like a single image, then print the image to PDF if a PDF file is mandatory.
Choose the right output before you capture
“Full website screenshot as a PDF” can mean two different deliverables:
| Need | Best method | What you receive |
|---|---|---|
| A readable document for printing, sharing or archiving | Browser Print → Save as PDF | A paginated PDF with selectable text in many cases |
| A visual replica of the rendered page, including its screen layout | Full-page screenshot, then optional image-to-PDF conversion | One tall image (normally PNG) or a PDF containing that image |
Print layout can differ from the live page: navigation may disappear, columns can reflow, and some interactive content may not print. A full-page image captures only what the browser has rendered and loaded at capture time. Inspect the result rather than assuming either method is identical to the screen.

Step 1: Load and finish the page
- Open the page in Chrome, Microsoft Edge, Safari or another modern browser.
- Wait for the text, images and embeds you need. If the site loads content while you scroll, scroll through the page first and wait for lazy-loaded images to appear.
- Close overlays that would obscure the page, or accept a consent dialog when the site requires it to reveal content.
Step 2: Open Print
Use the browser menu’s Print command. In Microsoft Edge, Ctrl+P on Windows or Command+P on macOS opens the print interface. Other browsers use the same keyboard shortcuts in most desktop installations.

Step 3: Select a PDF destination
Choose Save as PDF or the available PDF destination. The wording depends on the browser and operating system. On some Windows setups, a system PDF printer appears instead; Chrome also exposes its own Save as PDF destination when a Windows PDF printer is unavailable.
Step 4: Tune the preview
Use the preview to check every page. Adjust the controls that your browser exposes:
- Pages: all pages, a range, or selected pages.
- Layout: portrait or landscape.
- Margins: default, minimum or custom, depending on the browser.
- Scale: reduce it if columns are clipped; increase it only when text remains readable.
- Background graphics: enable this when colored sections, background images or page styling are important. Edge places this option under More settings.
- Headers and footers: turn them off when you do not want the page title, URL or date added to each sheet.
Step 5: Save and verify
- Click Save, choose a filename and select a folder.
- Reopen the PDF in a viewer.
- Check the first, middle and final pages, image placement, page breaks, links and any content that was loaded late.
Previewing is essential: the print renderer may use a site’s print stylesheet, omit controls, or move content to a different page than the on-screen view.

Microsoft Edge settings that most affect the result
Edge’s print panel makes the common quality trade-offs visible. Use More settings to change paper size, scale, margins, page range and background graphics. Landscape orientation often prevents wide tables from being cut off; smaller scale can keep a wide layout on one sheet but makes text smaller. If backgrounds are missing, enable Background graphics and preview again. If a page still looks wrong, the site may deliberately define a print-specific layout that the browser cannot override cleanly.
Method 2: Capture a full-page screenshot, then make a PDF
Firefox’s built-in full-page capture
- Right-click an empty area of the webpage.
- Choose Take Screenshot.
- Choose Save full page.
- Select Download to save the result.
Firefox documents this download as a PNG image in the browser’s download folder. It is not a direct PDF export in those steps. To deliver a PDF, open the PNG and use the operating system or image viewer’s Print command, then select a PDF destination. The resulting PDF contains the image, so text generally will not be selectable like text in a print-generated document.
Firefox Developer Tools
Firefox’s developer tools also provide a whole-page screenshot. The screenshot control may need to be enabled in toolbox settings. In the Web Console, the screenshot helper accepts the --fullpage option to include content outside the current window. The documented output is an image file; convert it to PDF afterward if required.
Rank #3
- FAST PRINT SPEEDS: Print up to 19 pages per minute.
- COMPACT DESIGN: Space-saving, compact design fits anywhere in your home, school or small office.
- WIRELESS CONNECTIVITY: Print from almost anywhere in your workspace using your compatible mobile device.
- PAPER CAPACITY: Up to 150 sheets.
- SUSTAINABILITY: Uses less than 2 watts in Energy Saver mode.
When the image route is preferable
- The exact visual arrangement matters more than selectable text.
- You need one continuous canvas rather than normal page breaks.
- The page’s print stylesheet removes important visual elements.
It is less suitable for very long pages, because a huge raster image can be slow to open, consume substantial memory and become difficult to read when scaled down.
Make sure the page is actually captured
Lazy-loaded images and infinite scroll
A full-page command cannot include content the browser has not rendered. Scroll through long pages before printing or capturing, pause for images to load, and look for “load more” controls. Infinite-scroll pages may never have a stable end; capture the loaded portion or use the site’s own export if it provides one.
Logins, private content and interactive states
The browser captures the session you are currently using. Confirm that you are signed in to the intended account, that the correct tab is active, and that expanded panels or selected filters are visible before opening Print. A capture does not prove that hidden, collapsed or permission-gated content exists in the PDF.

Pop-ups, cookie notices and chat widgets
Dismiss overlays before capture. A consent banner can cover content in an image and can also alter the page layout in print preview. Chat launchers and newsletter prompts should be closed where the site permits it.
Or skip the browser setup
ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. It accepts a URL and returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP or PDF. Before capture, it can accept the cookie/consent banner and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be disabled. Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the outcome with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers.
The API supports full-page capture with lazy images loaded, CSS-selector element capture, dark mode, 12 device presets or any viewport, retina scale, PDF paper size, margins, landscape and page ranges, HTML/CSS-to-image, custom CSS and JavaScript, pre-capture clicks, hidden selectors, waits for a selector, delay or network idle, ad/tracker/request/resource blocking, custom headers, cookies, user agents and Authorization, timezone and geolocation, transparent backgrounds, image resizing, selectable cache TTL, signed links for public <img> tags, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, up to 100 URLs per bulk call, a usage API and an OpenAPI specification. Parameter names used by other screenshot APIs also work, easing migration.
Use the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for the complete option names. The following calls are runnable; replace YOUR_API_KEY and the target URL.
cURL
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
Python
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
Node.js
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
Request PDF output with the documented PDF format parameter, and add waits, viewport, cookies, authentication or cleanup options when the target requires them. For recurring jobs, use asynchronous capture and signed webhooks rather than holding an HTTP request open. Check the response headers and HTTP status before treating a file as a successful capture.

Troubleshooting checklist
The PDF is blank or missing sections
- Return to the page and wait for network activity and lazy-loaded elements to finish.
- Scroll through the page, expand required sections, then reopen Print.
- Try enabling background graphics or disabling a site’s print-specific layout by using the screenshot-to-image route.
Images or colors are missing
- Enable Background graphics in Edge’s More settings (or the equivalent control).
- Check whether the image was blocked, still loading or available only after scrolling.
- Use a full-page image capture when visual fidelity is more important than selectable text.
Text is cut off or pages break badly
- Change portrait to landscape for wide tables.
- Reduce scale modestly and preview again.
- Adjust margins and page range; do not assume the on-screen width maps to paper width.
The full-page screenshot stops early
- Finish loading infinite-scroll or “load more” content first.
- Check for a login expiration or an overlay blocking interaction.
- For automated capture, add an explicit selector wait, delay or network-idle wait and load lazy images before capture.
An API request returns an error or an unusable file
- Verify the access key, URL encoding and timeout.
- Inspect the HTTP status plus
X-Page-VerdictandX-Billedheaders. - Supply required cookies, Authorization, user agent, timezone or geolocation for protected or localized pages.
- Use asynchronous jobs for slow pages and signed webhooks for completion.
Quality, privacy and reliability considerations
- Preview is a test: a saved file can exist even when the last page, a background or a late image is wrong.
- Choose the representation deliberately: print PDFs are usually easier to search and print; image PDFs preserve appearance but can be large and harder to read.
- Repeatability: record the URL, date, viewport, scale, page range and any login or cookie state when captures are evidence or documentation.
- Automation: set waits and explicit selectors rather than relying on a fixed short delay. Cache with a chosen TTL when the page does not change frequently.
- Sensitive pages: avoid placing private URLs, cookies or Authorization values in logs, shell history or shared code.
Which method should you use?
- Use Print → Save as PDF for a conventional document, selectable text and controlled pagination.
- Use a full-page screenshot when the rendered appearance is the priority; convert the PNG to PDF only at the end.
- Use ScreenshotNeo when you need repeatable, scripted captures, cleanup of consent and chat overlays, PDF options, bulk URLs, or an AI-agent workflow through MCP.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Firefox full-page screenshot save directly as a PDF?
No. Firefox’s documented Save full page workflow downloads a PNG. Print that image to a PDF destination if you need a PDF file.
Why does my PDF look different from the webpage?
Browsers apply print layout rules, and sites may hide or rearrange content for paper. Check the print preview, background-graphics setting, scale, margins and orientation before saving.
Can a capture include content behind a login?
Only if the active browser session or automated request has the necessary authentication and the content has been rendered. Hidden or permission-gated content is not automatically included.
