Short answer: Selenium 3’s Java screenshot interface can save a screenshot to a file, but a normal WebDriver screenshot call is not a cross-browser guarantee that the image will include the entire document. In Selenium 3.141.59, use TakesScreenshot.getScreenshotAs(OutputType.FILE), then inspect the saved image to confirm its coverage. The driver and browser determine whether the result is a full page, a window, a frame view, or another supported extent.
What “full-page screenshot” means in Selenium 3
A browser viewport is only the visible rectangle inside the browser window. A full-page screenshot is expected to include the document beyond that rectangle, including content farther down the page. These are different outcomes: a file can be a valid screenshot and still show only the current viewport or window.
The Selenium Java API documentation for version 3.141.59 describes screenshots as a best-effort capability. It gives a preference order of the entire page, the current window, the visible portion of the current frame, and then the complete display. That order is not a promise that every browser driver can capture the entire document. Your Selenium version, language binding, browser, and driver implementation all matter.
This article uses Java because the versioned Selenium 3.141.59 Java API documents the TakesScreenshot interface and OutputType.FILE. Do not assume that the same method signatures or full-page behavior are available in every Selenium 3 language binding.

Capture and save a screenshot in Java
The example below starts Chrome, opens a page, waits until its body is present, asks the driver for a screenshot, copies the returned file to a named path, and closes the browser. It uses Selenium 3.141.59 APIs. The wait only confirms that the body exists; it does not establish that every image, script, or asynchronous component has finished loading.
1. Add the Selenium 3 dependency
For a Maven project, add this dependency to pom.xml:

The Java API documents this screenshot request as best effort; saving the file successfully does not prove that it covers the whole page.
3. Check the image rather than assuming it is full-page
Open the output and inspect the top, middle, and bottom of the document. Check its pixel dimensions in an image viewer or with your usual image-inspection tool, and compare the visible content with the page. A tall document is a useful clue, but dimensions alone do not prove that all meaningful page content was captured.

If the result ends at the viewport, treat it as a viewport screenshot. Check the documentation for the exact browser and driver combination you run and look for a full-page capture mechanism supported by that combination. The generic Selenium 3 Java call does not provide a portable guarantee of full-document coverage.
Prepare the page before capturing it
Screenshot output reflects what the browser has rendered when the driver takes the image. A body-presence wait is a starting point, not a universal page-ready condition. For pages with dynamic content, decide what “ready” means for your test and wait for that condition before requesting the screenshot.
- Wait for a page-specific element: if the content you care about appears after a request or client-side update, wait for that element rather than only the document body.
- Account for lazy-loaded content: images or sections may be loaded only after they approach the viewport. If the page uses this behavior, inspect whether those regions actually loaded before treating the image as complete.
- Handle consent screens and overlays: a banner, modal, or chat panel can obscure page content. Decide whether the screenshot should show it or whether your test should dismiss it through the site’s normal UI.
- Keep the capture reproducible: use the same browser, driver, window configuration, page state, and readiness condition when comparing screenshots across runs.
These are preparation practices, not guarantees that Selenium 3 can capture a full document. If the document is longer than the result, page preparation alone does not change the screenshot extent supported by the driver.
Choose the right approach for your Selenium 3 setup
Before building a workaround, identify the exact combination you are testing: Selenium 3 version, language binding, browser, and driver. The answer may differ between combinations, so avoid treating a method documented for current Selenium or a particular browser as proof of support in Selenium 3.

When to use a scroll-and-stitch workaround
Use this only when a native full-page capture is unavailable and you can validate the result for your page. A workaround must scroll through the document, capture overlapping viewport images, and combine them. That introduces extra moving parts: a fixed header can appear in every segment; an animation or live feed can change between captures; a page may load new content as it scrolls; and a wrong overlap can leave repeated or missing rows. The available sources do not establish a single tested, cross-browser Selenium 3 implementation, so treat any such routine as project-specific rather than a guaranteed fix.

Troubleshooting
The screenshot contains only the visible viewport
Cause: the driver returned a viewport or window capture rather than the entire document, which is allowed by the browser-dependent best-effort behavior.
Fix: verify the image, then consult documentation for the exact browser and driver combination for a full-page facility. If none is available, assess a scroll-and-stitch workaround against the page’s sticky elements and dynamic content.

The saved file is missing or overwritten
Cause: the destination path may not be where you expected, or an existing file may have been replaced by the copy operation.
Fix: check the absolute path printed by the example. Change selenium-shot.png to a unique name when you need to keep earlier captures; the example deliberately uses REPLACE_EXISTING.
The screenshot is blank or misses late content
Cause: the page may not have rendered the relevant content when the screenshot request ran. Waiting for the body only confirms that the body element is present.
Fix: wait for a page-specific readiness condition and inspect whether the target content or lazy-loaded assets are present before capture. A longer fixed sleep may help diagnose a timing issue, but it is less precise than waiting for the state your page requires.

The program cannot start Chrome
Cause: the browser or driver is unavailable to the process, or their versions are incompatible.
Fix: install Chrome and a compatible ChromeDriver, make the driver discoverable through the environment or configure its location, and rerun. This is a browser setup issue, separate from whether the resulting screenshot is full-page.
The Java compiler cannot find Selenium classes
Cause: the Selenium dependency is absent from the project classpath or Maven has not resolved the declared dependency.
Fix: confirm the selenium-java dependency is in the project’s Maven configuration, refresh or build the project, and check that the import errors are resolved before debugging screenshot behavior.
Performance, reliability, and cost considerations
A single screenshot request is simpler than a stitching pipeline, but its reliability for full-document output depends on the browser-driver implementation. A stitching workflow requires multiple scrolls and captures, so it also creates more opportunities for page changes and timing differences. For repeatable testing, capture a stable page state and verify output coverage as part of the test rather than relying on a successful file write.

For automated suites, store screenshots only when they are useful for debugging or comparison, and use distinct output names if each run must be retained. Selenium itself is an open-source browser automation framework; any infrastructure cost depends on where and how you run the browser. This Selenium Java example does not add an API screenshot charge.
