Use FirefoxDriver’s dedicated full-page method when you need the simplest documented Java solution: call getFullPageScreenshotAs(OutputType.FILE) after the page has rendered, then copy the returned temporary file to a permanent location. Selenium’s generic TakesScreenshot command captures the top-level visual viewport, not necessarily the entire document. Chrome requires a browser-specific DevTools approach whose method signature depends on your Selenium DevTools module and browser version.
What “full-page” means in Selenium
A full-page screenshot contains the document from the top through its full scrollable height. That differs from three commonly confused operations:
- Viewport screenshot: the standard WebDriver screenshot command captures the currently visible visual viewport.
- Element screenshot: a
WebElementscreenshot captures one element’s rendered bounds, not the whole document. - Maximize or fullscreen: changing the browser window dimensions does not change the standard command’s defined capture region into an entire page.
The W3C WebDriver specification defines the ordinary Take Screenshot command as capturing the top-level browsing context’s visual viewport. Therefore, a call through TakesScreenshot is a good portable baseline for viewport images, but it is not a reliable cross-browser synonym for “entire document.”
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFirefox: the direct full-page Java implementation
FirefoxDriver exposes an explicit getFullPageScreenshotAs(OutputType<X>) method. The API documentation describes it as capturing the full page and storing it in the specified location. Use a concrete FirefoxDriver reference (or otherwise retain access to that browser-specific method); the method is not part of every WebDriver implementation.

Minimal runnable example
import java.io.File;
import java.nio.file.Files;
import java.nio.file.Path;
import java.nio.file.StandardCopyOption;
import org.openqa.selenium.OutputType;
import org.openqa.selenium.firefox.FirefoxDriver;
public class FirefoxFullPageShot {
public static void main(String[] args) throws Exception {
FirefoxDriver driver = new FirefoxDriver();
try {
driver.get("https://example.com");
File temporaryShot = driver.getFullPageScreenshotAs(OutputType.FILE);
Path destination = Path.of("artifacts", "example-full-page.png");
Files.createDirectories(destination.getParent());
Files.copy(temporaryShot.toPath(), destination,
StandardCopyOption.REPLACE_EXISTING);
System.out.println("Saved to " + destination.toAbsolutePath());
} finally {
driver.quit();
}
}
}
OutputType.FILE asks Selenium for a file representation. The returned file is temporary, so copy it before the driver session ends or before the temporary-file cleanup performed by the runtime. In a test suite, generate a unique destination per test to avoid parallel workers overwriting one another.
Waiting for the page that you actually want to capture
The screenshot method captures the current rendered state. Navigate first, then wait for an application-specific condition rather than relying on a fixed sleep. Typical conditions include a results container becoming visible, a loading indicator disappearing, or a known number of rows being present. If content is inserted after the initial load, capture only after that insertion has completed.
For pages with lazy-loaded images, a full-page API does not by itself prove that every offscreen asset has loaded. If your application requires those images, scroll through the document (or trigger the site’s own loading mechanism), wait for the relevant images to finish, and then capture. The exact scrolling and wait logic is page-specific.

import org.openqa.selenium.TakesScreenshot;
import org.openqa.selenium.WebDriver;
WebDriver driver = /* create your driver */;
driver.get("https://example.com");
File screenshot = ((TakesScreenshot) driver)
.getScreenshotAs(OutputType.FILE);
// Copy screenshot to a permanent path here.
This call follows the standard WebDriver screenshot command and should be described as a viewport capture. It should not replace Firefox’s full-page method when the complete document is the requirement.
Capturing one element instead
WebElement card = driver.findElement(By.cssSelector(".product-card"));
File cardShot = card.getScreenshotAs(OutputType.FILE);
Element capture is useful for component regression tests and snippets, but it is intentionally narrower than a document screenshot.
Chrome: use the matching DevTools binding
Chrome’s lower-level route is the DevTools Page.captureScreenshot command with a captureBeyondViewport option. Selenium publishes this API in versioned DevTools modules, so the Java package and method signature must match the module you include and the browser/Selenium versions you install.

The documented example reviewed for this approach is Selenium 4.22.0 with the DevTools v124 binding. In practical terms, create a DevTools session from your ChromeDriver, invoke that module’s Page.captureScreenshot, pass the beyond-viewport setting exposed by that version, decode the returned Base64 data, and write the bytes to a file. Because names and overloads vary, do not paste a v124 import into a project using a different CDP module without checking its signature.

Common failure modes and fixes
The image stops at the visible window
Cause: the code used TakesScreenshot, which is defined for the visual viewport. Fix: use FirefoxDriver’s full-page method, or the matching Chrome DevTools command with its beyond-viewport option.
The method is missing from your variable
Cause: the variable is typed only as WebDriver, or the active driver is not Firefox. Fix: retain a FirefoxDriver reference for the Firefox API and ensure the session actually uses Firefox. Do not assume the method exists on ChromeDriver or a generic driver.

Dynamic content is missing
Cause: capture occurred before the application finished rendering. Fix: wait for a meaningful DOM condition, such as a result element or removal of a spinner. Avoid treating an arbitrary sleep as a guarantee.
Images or sections remain blank
Cause: lazy loading, blocked resources, an iframe, or an application error. Fix: inspect the page in the same session, scroll or trigger lazy loading when required, wait for image readiness, and handle frames explicitly if the content is inside one. A screenshot API cannot repair content that the page never rendered.
Chrome code does not compile after an upgrade
Cause: DevTools packages are versioned and method signatures can change. Fix: align the Selenium DevTools module with the installed Selenium/browser combination and read that module’s Page.captureScreenshot documentation before updating imports or parameters.
Operational guidance for reliable captures
- Use a fresh driver session when isolation matters; stale cookies or prior navigation can change the result.
- Set a page-load strategy and explicit waits appropriate to the application, then capture after the final state is observable.
- Keep screenshot destinations outside temporary directories when artifacts must survive CI cleanup.
- Use deterministic viewport, device scale, timezone, and locale settings when comparing images between runs.
- Be cautious with sticky headers: a full-page compositor may repeat or reposition them depending on browser behavior. Treat the output as browser-rendered evidence and inspect representative pages.
- Frames, authentication walls, bot checks, and failed network requests are page conditions to diagnose separately; changing screenshot APIs does not make inaccessible content available.
Or skip the browser setup: ScreenshotNeo
If you only need an image or PDF of a URL and do not need Selenium’s in-browser interactions, ScreenshotNeo provides a single HTTP request. It accepts cookie and consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be disabled. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers report the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.
See the full parameter list in the ScreenshotNeo documentation. The same endpoint supports full-page capture, lazy-image loading, CSS-selector element capture, custom CSS and JavaScript, waits, blocking rules, headers, cookies, user agents, authorization, viewport and device presets, retina scale, PDF settings, resizing, caching, signed links, asynchronous webhooks, bulk requests, and a usage API.

Which method should you choose?
- Choose FirefoxDriver full-page capture for the shortest, explicit Java solution on Firefox.
- Choose TakesScreenshot when a viewport image is sufficient or you need the standard cross-driver abstraction.
- Choose Chrome DevTools when Chrome is mandatory and you can manage CDP/Selenium version coupling.
- Choose ScreenshotNeo when a URL-only API, cleaned captures, non-billed failures, PDF output, bulk jobs, or AI-agent access is more useful than controlling a live browser.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Firefox’s full-page method require scrolling the page first?
No scrolling call is required to invoke the documented method. However, scrolling or another page-specific trigger may still be necessary when the site lazy-loads content only after it enters the viewport.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Can I call getFullPageScreenshotAs on a WebDriver variable?
Not through the generic WebDriver interface. Keep a FirefoxDriver reference, or use an appropriate cast only when you know the active driver is Firefox.
Is a full-page screenshot the same as a PDF export?
No. A screenshot is a raster image of rendered pixels; PDF capture has its own paper, margin, orientation, and pagination rules.
Will ScreenshotNeo reproduce an authenticated Selenium session automatically?
Not automatically. If the target requires access credentials, supply the supported headers or cookies through ScreenshotNeo’s request options, or continue using Selenium for an interactive login flow.
