On desktop Chrome, you can save an entire webpage without scrolling: open DevTools, run Capture full size screenshot, and Chrome downloads an image containing content below the visible viewport.
The method is built into Chrome, costs nothing, and is usually the best first choice. This guide covers the exact steps, long-page edge cases, automation, PDF alternatives, enterprise restrictions, troubleshooting, and an API option when you need repeatable captures.
Capture a full webpage in Chrome (desktop)
- Open the page. Wait until the content you need is loaded.
- Open DevTools. Press
Ctrl+Shift+Ion Windows or Linux, orCommand+Option+Ion macOS. You can also open Chrome’s menu, choose More tools, then Developer tools. - Open the Command Menu. Press
Ctrl+Shift+Pon Windows or Linux, orCommand+Shift+Pon macOS. - Run the full-page command. Type
Capture full size screenshot, then select that command. - Find the file. Chrome saves the resulting image through its normal download flow, normally in your configured Downloads folder.
The full-size command differs from a regular viewport screenshot: it includes page content that is not currently visible below the fold. Google’s DevTools documentation describes the same action through More options > Capture a full size screenshot.
If the command is not visible
- Click inside the DevTools panel before pressing the Command Menu shortcut.
- Search for
full size screenshotrather than the entire phrase. - Undock DevTools or widen the panel if its controls are compressed; the Command Menu method should still work.
- Make sure you are using desktop Chrome DevTools. Google’s documented workflow does not establish an equivalent command in the Android or iOS Chrome interface.
Prepare the page before capturing
A full-page screenshot is a snapshot of the page state Chrome has rendered at that moment. Preparation matters more than the keystroke.

- CRISP CLARITY: This 23.8″ Philips V line monitor delivers crisp Full HD 1920x1080 visuals. Enjoy movies, shows and videos with remarkable detail
- INCREDIBLE CONTRAST: The VA panel produces brighter whites and deeper blacks. You get true-to-life images and more gradients with 16.7 million colors
- THE PERFECT VIEW: The 178/178 degree extra wide viewing angle prevents the shifting of colors when viewed from an offset angle, so you always get consistent colors
- WORK SEAMLESSLY: This sleek monitor is virtually bezel-free on three sides, so the screen looks even bigger for the viewer. This minimalistic design also allows for seamless multi-monitor setups that enhance your workflow and boost productivity
- A BETTER READING EXPERIENCE: For busy office workers, EasyRead mode provides a more paper-like experience for when viewing lengthy documents
Wait for dynamic content
Allow charts, images, fonts, and client-rendered sections to finish loading. If a page loads content only after scrolling, the capture may trigger different behavior than a manual reading session. For important pages, compare the top, middle, and bottom of the saved image with the live page.
Handle sticky headers and embedded content
Fixed navigation bars can appear repeatedly or overlap content when a browser stitches a long page. Video players, maps, cross-origin frames, and animated widgets may also differ between the live view and the saved image. Pause animations where possible and inspect the output before publishing or archiving it.
Choose the right page state
- Dismiss consent dialogs and newsletter prompts that obscure content.
- Sign in if the target material is behind an account, subject to your organization’s policies.
- Set the page zoom and viewport arrangement you want represented. The capture reflects the rendered desktop page, not a separately designed mobile screenshot.
Full-page image versus a PDF
Capture full size screenshot produces an image. Use Chrome’s print dialog when you need selectable text, pagination, paper sizes, margins, headers, or footers in a PDF. A PDF is a document export, not a pixel-for-pixel substitute: page breaks can split sections and print styles can hide or rearrange elements.
For a visual record, social preview, bug report, or design review, PNG is generally more suitable. For a document intended for printing or text search, PDF is usually the better format.

One-click extension alternative
Chrome extensions can add a toolbar button or keyboard shortcut for long-page capture and may offer PNG and PDF export. GoFullPage, for example, is listed in the Chrome Web Store as a whole-page capture tool with PNG/PDF downloads and an Alt+Shift+P shortcut. Store user counts and ratings are volatile, so treat them as current listing information rather than a permanent performance measure. Review an extension’s permissions and privacy policy before using it on private or authenticated pages.
Automate captures with Chrome
Chrome DevTools Protocol
For scripts and test systems, the Chrome DevTools Protocol exposes the Page.captureScreenshot method. A client first connects to a running Chrome debugging session, selects a page target, and sends that method with the desired format and capture options. Your implementation must handle the returned image data, write it to a file, and close the session cleanly. Protocol clients vary, so consult the documentation for the client library and Chrome version you operate.
Headless Chrome command line
Headless Chrome supports a --screenshot flag. The official Headless documentation states that this command writes screenshot.png in the current working directory. A minimal invocation is:
chrome --headless --screenshot https://example.com
The exact executable name differs by operating system and installation channel. Add your platform’s Chrome binary path when necessary. Headless capture is useful in CI, but you still need to account for network readiness, authentication, cookie banners, lazy loading, and pages that require JavaScript interaction.
Why a capture can look incomplete
Lazy-loaded images
Some pages request images only when an element approaches the viewport. A full-size command may not reproduce every scroll-triggered request. Scroll through the page once before capturing, or use an automation workflow that explicitly waits for the images and then verifies the output.

- Ultra-thin bezels: Maximize your viewing experience with thin bezels.
Infinite scroll
An infinite feed has no fixed “entire page.” Capture the loaded portion, stop loading new items, or use an export supplied by the site. Otherwise the page can keep changing while Chrome is preparing the image.
Very long or changing pages
Long documents can exceed practical image dimensions or contain sections that change during capture. Save a test image, inspect its dimensions and bottom edge, and consider several section captures or a PDF when one enormous bitmap is unwieldy.
Enterprise and policy restrictions
Managed Chrome environments can block screenshot capture. Chrome’s browser.debugger documentation notes that the DisableScreenshots enterprise policy or data-loss-prevention (DLP) rules can cause capture attempts to fail. If the command is missing, disabled, or produces an error only on a work device, ask your administrator whether those controls apply. Do not attempt to bypass a corporate restriction.
Troubleshooting checklist
“Capture full size screenshot” does nothing
- Confirm DevTools has focus and rerun the command from the Command Menu.
- Reload the page, wait for it to settle, and try again.
- Check whether an enterprise policy or DLP rule blocks screenshots.
The bottom of the page is blank
- Scroll through the page once to trigger lazy-loaded sections.
- Wait for network activity and fonts to finish.
- Try the capture again from a stable page state.
Content is duplicated or covered
- Look for fixed or sticky headers and cookie dialogs.
- Dismiss overlays before capture.
- Use print-to-PDF or a sectioned capture if the layout cannot be rendered cleanly as one bitmap.
The image is too large to use
Resize or compress a copy for email and documentation, while retaining the original for evidence. If you need a defined width, format, or repeated workflow, an API can make those settings explicit.

Or skip the browser setup: ScreenshotNeo
ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. One GET request returns PNG, JPEG, WebP, or a PDF. It accepts cookie and consent banners as a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each cleanup step can be disabled. Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers report the page verdict and whether the request was billed.
Use the API documentation at https://screenshotneo.com/docs/ for parameter details. These runnable examples target Stripe; replace the URL with the page you own or are authorized to capture.
