To stop a recurring PayPal charge, sign in at PayPal.com and go to Settings → Payments → Subscriptions and saved businesses or Automatic Payments. Select the merchant and cancel the automatic payment. Then cancel the subscription with the merchant, too, and save proof of both cancellations. Cancelling PayPal autopay is meant to stop future payments under that specific agreement; it does not automatically cancel your merchant contract or refund a payment that has already completed.
The steps and policy details here are for U.S. PayPal personal accounts. Labels can vary by account, app version, and region.
First, identify what you need to stop
“Cancel my PayPal subscription” can mean several different things. Identifying the right one helps you avoid stopping the wrong payment—or assuming a charge has been reversed when it has not.

- PayPal automatic payment: PayPal’s authorization for a merchant to charge your PayPal account automatically. PayPal may also call this a subscription, billing agreement, recurring payment, or preapproved payment. PayPal’s U.S. User Agreement describes these arrangements.
- Merchant subscription: Your contract or account with the service, such as a streaming plan, software membership, or free trial. Cancelling PayPal’s authorization does not necessarily end this contract.
- Completed payment: A charge that has already gone through. Stopping autopay does not reverse it; for a refund, PayPal directs users to contact the seller.
- Pending payment: A payment that has been initiated but is not complete. It may still proceed even after you cancel future autopay.
- Unauthorized payment: A transaction you did not authorize. This should be reported through PayPal’s Resolution Center, not treated simply as an unwanted renewal.
- Merchant-direct billing: A subscription managed by the merchant, Apple, Google Play, or another service, even if PayPal or a linked payment method was involved at signup.
For a normal subscription you no longer want, the safest approach is to cancel both the merchant service and the PayPal automatic payment.

Cancel a PayPal automatic payment on the website
- Type PayPal.com into your browser and sign in directly. Avoid signing in through a renewal email or text link.
- Open Settings.
- Select Payments.
- Open Subscriptions and saved businesses or Automatic Payments. PayPal’s help pages use both labels, so the wording may differ in your account.
- Select the merchant or payment agreement you want to stop.
- Choose Cancel, Cancel automatic payment, or the equivalent option, then confirm.
- Save the confirmation page or email. Note the merchant name and cancellation date.
Afterward, check the merchant’s website or app to confirm the actual subscription is cancelled. If the PayPal entry offers only an option such as Remove or Unlink, read the confirmation carefully and check with the merchant about the service itself.

Cancel in the PayPal app
App navigation is less consistent. Open the app’s Menu or Accounts area and look for Subscriptions, Subscriptions and saved businesses, Automatic Payments, or Linked Businesses. Select the merchant and use the available cancellation option, which may be labelled Cancel, Cancel this autopay, or Remove/Unlink PayPal as your payment method.

Cancel with the merchant, too
PayPal cancellation concerns its authorization to make automatic payments. The merchant may still consider your service contract active, and you may still owe a valid balance, a charge for a billing period already started, or another amount permitted by the contract and applicable law. Conversely, cancelling only on the merchant’s site may not remove the PayPal billing agreement if that arrangement remains active.
Use the merchant’s official website, app, or support channel. You can send a message like this:
I am cancelling my subscription effective immediately and revoking authorization for future recurring charges. Please confirm the cancellation date, that no further payments will be taken, and whether any final balance is due.

Keep a copy of your message and the merchant’s response. Record the cancellation date and time, confirmation number, and any support ticket details.

What to do about a charge that has already started
Completed charge you authorized
If a trial renewed or a subscription charged before you cancelled it, contact the merchant promptly and request a refund. Include the transaction date and the date and time you cancelled, if applicable. Attach your confirmation or screenshot and ask the merchant to confirm future billing is disabled. PayPal says to contact the seller to request a refund for a completed payment. If the charge continued after a valid cancellation or appears inconsistent with the stated terms, ask your card issuer or bank about its dispute process as well.
The FTC’s guidance on free trials and auto-renewals recommends keeping cancellation records and taking action when billing continues after cancellation.
Pending payment
Open the transaction details promptly. If PayPal displays a Cancel option, use it. If there is no cancellation option, contact the seller and PayPal through their official channels; cancelling autopay alone may not stop a payment already initiated. PayPal’s U.S. User Agreement notes that some sellers may take up to 30 days to complete a transaction while an authorization remains valid. Do not assume every pending payment can be cancelled.

Before reporting fraud, check whether a family member used the account, the merchant name differs from the brand, a trial ended, or the subscription was set up under another email address or PayPal account. If you still believe the payment was unauthorized:

- Go to PayPal’s Resolution Center.
- Select Report a problem and choose the payment.
- Select I want to report unauthorized activity and follow the prompts.
PayPal says it will email you within 10 days after you file an unauthorized-transaction report. For current instructions, see PayPal’s reporting help page. Also change your PayPal password, enable two-factor authentication if available, review recent activity and linked payment methods, and check the automatic-payment list. Contact PayPal through its official Help Center rather than using a number in a suspicious message.
If you cannot find the subscription in PayPal
Check these possibilities before concluding that billing has stopped:
- Search PayPal transaction history for the exact merchant name and open the transaction details.
- Search your email accounts for the PayPal receipt and the merchant’s subscription confirmation.
- Sign in directly to the merchant’s website and inspect its billing settings.
- If you subscribed through a mobile app, check the Apple App Store or Google Play subscriptions area; the billing relationship may be managed there.
- Check other PayPal accounts or email addresses you may have used.
- Contact the merchant through its official website. If the transaction appears to be a PayPal automatic payment but you cannot cancel it, contact PayPal through the Help Center.
A payment may also be a one-time transaction, appear under a linked business, or already have been initiated before you cancelled the agreement. Continue checking PayPal and your bank or card statements while you sort it out.
If charges continue after cancellation
- Confirm both cancellations. Check the merchant account and PayPal automatic-payment list, and keep evidence from each.
- Contact the merchant in writing. Give the cancellation date and ask why the charge occurred and whether a refund is due.
- Contact PayPal. Ask for help with the automatic-payment agreement or report the transaction if it was genuinely unauthorized.
- Contact your bank or card issuer. Ask about disputing the charge and, if a bank-account debit is involved, the institution’s stop-payment process. Procedures, deadlines, and rights depend on the payment method and circumstances.
- Keep monitoring statements. A declined payment does not prove the subscription is cancelled; the merchant may retry or use another funding source.
For an automatic debit from a bank account, the CFPB recommends notifying both the company and your bank or credit union, following up in writing, and asking the institution about a stop-payment order. Fees may apply. Stopping the payment does not cancel the underlying contract or debt.

Why removing a card or changing payment settings is not enough
Removing a card or bank account is not the same as cancelling the subscription or the PayPal automatic-payment agreement. An already authorized transaction may still be in progress, and a PayPal agreement may have its own preferred or backup payment method. Changing your general preferred payment method can simply change where a charge is funded from; it may not stop the charge.
Do not rely on emptying your PayPal balance, blocking one card, or waiting for a payment to fail. Do not close your PayPal account before saving transaction and cancellation evidence or addressing any open dispute. Cancel the specific agreement, cancel the merchant service, and confirm the result.
PayPal’s three-business-day timing provision
For U.S. personal accounts, PayPal’s User Agreement says a user may cancel a recurring automatic payment at least 3 business days before the next scheduled payment through account settings, the Help Center, or PayPal customer service. Act as early as possible; weekends and applicable holidays are not business days.

This is a provision of the U.S. PayPal agreement, not a universal rule for every country or account type, and it is not a guarantee that a payment already made will be refunded. It also does not by itself cancel the merchant contract. See the PayPal U.S. User Agreement for its terms.
Keep a cancellation record
Save the merchant name, PayPal transaction ID, subscription terms, cancellation date and time, confirmation email or screenshot, support ticket number, and any later statement showing another charge. These records help the merchant, PayPal, or your bank understand what happened and when.
Prevent the next unwanted renewal
- Read the trial, renewal, and cancellation terms before entering payment details.
- Record the trial end date and first full-price billing date; set a reminder several days ahead.
- Save the cancellation instructions when you sign up.
- Review PayPal automatic payments and bank or card statements periodically.
- Check whether a mobile-app subscription is billed through Apple or Google Play.
- Use a dedicated payment method for recurring services if practical.
- Do not click suspicious renewal links or call phone numbers in questionable messages. Visit the known official website instead.
- Keep cancellation confirmations until you are sure billing has stopped.
The FTC’s subscription guidance also advises reviewing trial terms, monitoring statements, and retaining cancellation records.
