Short answer: cancel a synchronous OpenAI image-generation request by aborting its HTTP connection. In Node.js, pass an AbortSignal to the SDK and call abort(); this also stops the request while the response body is being read. For a background Responses API request, call POST /v1/responses/{response_id}/cancel and record the returned response status. Streaming uses the same transport rule: abort the stream and close the connection.

OpenAI documents image generation through the Image API’s POST /images/generations operation and through the Responses API. The Image API supports synchronous output and streamed partial images; the reviewed image-generation references do not define a separate image-job cancellation endpoint. Consequently, cancellation is either a transport action or, for background Responses work, the Responses cancellation endpoint.
The Background mode guide states: “To cancel a synchronous response, terminate the connection.” See the Background mode guide, the Image generation guide, and the Create image reference.

Node.js with the OpenAI SDK
Create an AbortController, pass its signal to the image request, and call abort() from your cancel button, timeout handler, job shutdown hook, or other cancellation source.

}The Node SDK documentation describes AbortSignal cancellation, including cancellation while the response body is being read. See the OpenAI Node SDK documentation. Keep the controller associated with the specific request; a shared controller can accidentally cancel unrelated generations.
Browser or fetch clients
The same mechanism works with fetch. Do not expose an OpenAI API key in production browser code; call your own server and let the server own the key and the abortable upstream request.

}In a server framework, propagate the incoming request’s disconnect signal to the upstream call. If the user closes a page, your server can then stop waiting on the OpenAI connection instead of keeping an orphaned request alive.

}'For a programmatic deadline, wrap cURL in your process supervisor or use the timeout facilities of the HTTP client that starts it. The cancellation signal is the closed connection; there is no Image API job ID to submit to a separate cancel route for this synchronous operation.

With Python’s standard library, close the response or session from the thread that owns the request. A production application will usually use an HTTP client with an explicit cancellation primitive and timeout.

Cancel a streamed image generation
Streaming does not create a different cancellation resource. Attach an abort signal before opening the stream, stop consuming events when cancellation is requested, and close the underlying connection. Partial image data already delivered to your application may remain in memory, but an interrupted stream is not a completed generation.

}The available image-generation method index lists generation methods and stream event types, but not a separate image-generation cancel method. That is why closing the transport is the correct operation for a synchronous or streamed call.
Cancel a background Responses API image request
Background mode is different: first create the response, retain its ID, and then call the documented cancellation endpoint while it is in flight.

save_job_status(response_id, cancelled["status"])Whether the response is still cancellable is a race: completion can happen between your UI action and the POST. Treat the returned status as authoritative for your state transition and make repeated cancel clicks idempotent in your own application.
Implement cancellation safely
Keep the right identifier
- For synchronous and streamed calls, keep the controller, request handle, or socket reference.
- For background Responses calls, persist the response ID as soon as creation succeeds.
- Associate cancellation state with your own user/job ID so one user’s action cannot abort another user’s request.
Separate user cancellation from failure
An abort exception is expected when the user cancels. Record it as cancelled, not as a server outage. Preserve genuine HTTP errors, authentication failures, timeouts, and malformed responses as separate states so retry logic does not restart an intentionally stopped generation.
Handle completed work conservatively
Cancellation stops the request or asks Background mode to cancel an in-flight response. The reviewed documentation does not promise that already completed work is rolled back or that usage is refunded. Do not display a refund guarantee, and do not delete an image that was successfully finalized merely because a later cancel action was clicked.
Troubleshooting
The request keeps running after I click Cancel
Verify that the signal passed to the SDK is the same controller you abort, and that your server is not buffering the request behind another queue. For streaming, stop the event loop and close the HTTP response, not just the UI timer.

I receive a generic network error
A deliberate connection close commonly surfaces as a transport exception. Check the controller’s aborted flag (or your cancellation token) before classifying the error. Only retry when the cancellation flag is false and your retry policy allows it.
The background cancel call returns an error
Check the response ID, API key, authorization scope, and endpoint path. The path is /v1/responses/{response_id}/cancel, with POST. If generation already finished, use the returned response or error details to reconcile your local job state instead of repeatedly posting cancel requests.
My application cannot cancel from the browser
Keep the API key on your server. Have the browser send a cancel command to your server; the server then aborts its upstream request or calls the Responses cancel endpoint. This also lets you authenticate which user owns the generation.
Can I cancel after saving a partial image?
You can stop the stream after receiving partial data, but the saved bytes are only a partial result. Label them accordingly and require a completed event before treating an image as ready for download.

- Abort promptly when the user no longer needs an image; this frees your client-side connection and worker sooner.
- Use deadlines to prevent abandoned synchronous calls from occupying resources indefinitely.
- Persist background statuses and reconcile them after process restarts; an in-memory controller cannot cancel a job after the process has exited.
- Design UI state transitions for races:
cancel requested,cancelled,completed, andfailedare distinct outcomes. - The reviewed OpenAI documentation does not state that cancellation guarantees a usage reversal or refund. Account for that uncertainty in quotas and billing displays.

Is there a cancel endpoint for POST /images/generations?
Not in the reviewed Image API references. Abort the HTTP request instead.
Do I need to keep polling after cancelling a background response?
Record the object returned by the cancel POST. Your application should reconcile the stored status rather than assuming a separate polling result.
Does aborting guarantee a refund?
No such guarantee is stated in the reviewed documentation.
