Most paid “Google Drive storage” plans are now managed as Google One memberships. To cancel, open Google One, choose Settings, select Cancel membership, and confirm. On Android, use the Google One app; if Apple, Google Play, a carrier, or another provider bills you, cancel through that billing service instead.
Cancellation normally stops the next renewal but keeps your paid storage and benefits until the end of the current billing cycle. After that, your account returns to up to 15 GB shared by Google Drive, Gmail, and Google Photos.
Cancel Google Drive storage on a computer
- Go to Google One and sign in to the Google Account that is being charged.
- Open Settings.
- Select Cancel membership.
- Review the consequences and select Cancel membership again.
Keep the confirmation email and check the displayed end date. It should show that automatic renewal is off. If you have an older or legacy Drive storage plan, try Google’s storage settings, select the plan, choose Cancel, review the result, and select Cancel plan.

Cancel Google One on Android
- Open the Google One app.
- Tap Menu, then Settings.
- Tap Cancel membership.
- Confirm the cancellation.
Google documents this route in its Android cancellation instructions. If the plan was purchased through Google Play, check Play Store → profile picture → Payments & subscriptions → Subscriptions and manage Google One there.
Cancel Google One on an iPhone or iPad
If Apple billed the subscription, cancel it through Apple:
- Open the App Store.
- Tap your name or profile picture.
- Tap Subscriptions.
- Select Google One.
- Tap Cancel Subscription and confirm.
Apple-billed memberships generally cannot be canceled from the Google One website. Apple also handles refund requests for purchases billed through the App Store.
If Google One says the plan is managed elsewhere
Do not repeatedly try the Google One cancellation screen. Identify the seller shown on your receipt or account and use the matching route:

- Google One website: Cancel in Google One Settings.
- Google Play: Cancel from Google Play subscriptions.
- Apple: Cancel from App Store subscriptions.
- Carrier or other provider: Use the provider’s website or app. Google’s guidance for third-party plans is available at Google One subscription troubleshooting.
- Pixel Pass: The storage may be part of Pixel Pass, so you may need to cancel the bundle rather than Google One separately.
- Family plan: The family manager normally controls the plan. A family member may need to leave the group, while the manager can cancel the plan or turn off sharing.
Also verify that you are using the Google Account named on the receipt. Multiple accounts are a common reason the cancellation button is missing.
When does cancellation take effect?
For a normal Google One membership, cancellation usually stops future charges but does not remove the extra storage immediately. Storage and other benefits generally remain available until the end of the current billing period. The exact date shown in your account is the one to use.
After that date, the account normally returns to up to 15 GB of free storage shared across Drive, Gmail, and Photos. The amount may differ in practice because of promotions, account type, or other arrangements.

What happens to Drive files, Gmail, and Photos?
Canceling does not normally delete your existing Drive files, Gmail, or Photos immediately. The important question is whether your account is above its free quota when the paid period ends.

If the account is over quota, Google says you may experience restrictions such as:
- Gmail: You may be unable to send or receive messages, and messages sent to you may be returned.
- Drive: You may be unable to upload files, create new Docs, Sheets, Slides, Drawings, Forms, or Vids files, or sync the Drive folder with My Drive through Drive for desktop. Editing or copying affected files may also be restricted.
- Photos: New photos and videos may not back up.
You may still be able to sign in and view existing content. These restrictions are different from immediate deletion.

Check storage before canceling
To avoid losing access to important functions, aim to reduce usage to 15 GB or less before the paid period ends:

- Open Google One’s storage management page and review usage by Drive, Gmail, Photos, and backups.
- Download or export files you must retain.
- Delete large Drive files and unnecessary Gmail attachments.
- Empty Drive Trash.
- Empty Gmail Trash and Spam.
- Check Photos and device backups for large items.
- Allow storage calculations time to update after cleanup.
Some older Google Photos content, including Storage Saver photos and videos uploaded before June 1, 2021, may not have counted toward storage. Deleting it therefore may not reduce the displayed total. Google’s cleanup guidance is available at Manage your Google storage.
Google One benefits and family sharing
When the paid period ends, you can lose the extra storage, Google One family-sharing access, Google expert support, and premium subscriptions or benefits included with your particular plan. Availability varies by plan, country, and account; not every membership includes every benefit.

Family members may need their own storage plan if the manager cancels. If you are only a member of someone else’s family group, you generally cannot cancel the manager’s subscription yourself.

Cancellation is usually not a refund request. Google says storage purchases are generally non-refundable, and canceling normally preserves access through the paid term rather than returning unused months.

Refund eligibility can depend on your country, consumer law, purchaser, and billing platform. Google Play purchases follow the Google Play or Google storage refund process; Apple-billed purchases must generally be addressed with Apple. Some regions may allow immediate cancellation with a partial refund. Do not assume that canceling shortly after renewal guarantees a refund.
Troubleshooting cancellation problems
“Cancel membership” is missing
- Check that you are signed in to the account shown on the receipt.
- Look in Google Play or Apple subscriptions.
- Check whether a carrier or other provider manages the plan.
- Confirm whether you are a family member rather than the family manager.
- Try Google’s legacy storage settings if you have an older plan.
“I canceled, but I was charged again”
Check the cancellation confirmation, the account named on the receipt, Google Payments, and the relevant app-store or carrier account. The billing period may already have renewed, or the charge may belong to another service or account. Contact the actual seller and request a refund separately; cancellation does not automatically reverse a completed charge.
“My files disappeared”
Ordinary cancellation does not normally erase files immediately. First check the correct Google Account, Drive Trash, sharing permissions, and whether the files belonged to another account or shared drive. Prolonged over-quota status can eventually create deletion risk, but that is different from canceling a membership.
“I deleted files, but storage did not fall”
Deleted items may still count while they remain in Trash or Spam. Storage totals can also take time to update, and deleting content that never counted toward the quota will not lower the total.
Should you cancel or downgrade?
If you only need less space, compare the smaller Google One options shown in your account before canceling completely. If you want to leave Google, download important files and consider another cloud provider, local storage, or a NAS—but remember that Google’s quota covers Gmail and Photos as well as Drive. A single external drive is not a complete backup unless you also plan for failure, theft, and off-site copies.
Personal Google Account instructions do not automatically apply to Google Workspace accounts, whose storage rules may be controlled by an administrator.
