To bulk-delete WordPress users by role, filter the Users screen by the role, select the accounts, choose Delete, and decide whether their posts and links should be deleted or reassigned. For larger or repeatable jobs, WP-CLI can find users by role and delete their IDs, with optional post reassignment. On multisite, confirm whether the operation is for the current site or the entire network.

Before deleting: verify the scope and content choice

User deletion is destructive, so check these items before the final confirmation:

  • Role: Confirm the exact role you intend to remove (for example, Subscriber or Contributor).
  • Site: On multisite, make sure you are operating in the intended site context.
  • Accounts: Review the filtered names and select only the users that should be removed.
  • Content: Decide whether posts and links owned by those users should be deleted or attributed to another user.

Make a current backup according to your site’s normal change-control process before a large deletion. WordPress’s documented workflow and WP-CLI’s options are version-sensitive; verify the live documentation for your installation.

Bulk-delete users by role in the WordPress dashboard

This is the best choice for a small or moderate selection when you want to inspect accounts visually.

  1. Sign in with an account authorized to manage users, then open Users in the WordPress administration area.
  2. Above the user table, open the role filter and choose the role to remove, such as Subscribers. The Users screen provides links for users belonging to each role. See the WordPress Users screen documentation.
  3. Review the filtered results. Tick the check box for each account you want to delete; do not rely on the role filter alone if some accounts must remain.
  4. Open the bulk-actions menu, select Delete, and click Apply.
  5. On the confirmation screen, inspect the selected users again. Under WordPress’s question, “What should be done with posts and links owned by this user?”, choose one of the available options:
    • Delete all posts and links owned by the selected users.
    • Attribute posts and links to another user, then select the replacement account.
  6. Confirm the deletion only after the content-disposition choice is correct. WordPress then reports how many users were deleted.

The account currently signed in cannot be deleted through this bulk action. Labels and layout can vary with the WordPress version or site customizations, but the role filter, multi-selection, deletion action, and content choice are the central workflow.

Bulk-delete by role with WP-CLI

WP-CLI is useful when the list is large, the task must be repeatable, or you are comfortable working in a shell. Run commands from the correct WordPress installation and select the intended site before deleting anything.

1. List IDs for the role

wp user list accepts a role filter and can output only user IDs:

wp user list --role=contributor --field=ID

Replace contributor with the exact role slug used by your site. Inspect this output before proceeding; it is your final opportunity to confirm the target set without changing data.

2. Delete the IDs and reassign posts

The official command reference demonstrates deleting the resulting IDs while assigning their posts to user ID 2:

wp user delete $(wp user list --role=contributor --field=ID) --reassign=2

contributor and 2 are example values, not defaults. Replace the role with the target role slug and 2 with a valid recipient user ID on the target site. The --reassign option preserves post ownership by transferring attribution instead of deleting those posts. If you intend to remove the users’ posts and links, use the deletion behavior appropriate to your installed WP-CLI version rather than adding a reassignment target. Read the official wp user delete reference before executing a destructive command.

3. Batch very large selections

A shell can reject a command containing too many expanded IDs with an “argument list too long” error. The WP-CLI documentation shows processing 100 IDs at a time, for example:

wp user list --role=contributor --field=ID | head -n 100 | xargs wp user delete --reassign=2

Treat 100 as the documented operational example, not a universal limit. If you run multiple batches, verify every batch contains only intended users and remember that the remaining selection can change after each deletion. The command reference includes the batching pattern and related cautions: WP-CLI user deletion.

Multisite: site deletion versus network deletion

On WordPress multisite, scope matters:

  • Without --network, wp user delete removes the user from the current site.
  • With --network, it removes the user from the entire network.

The official reference advises reassigning posts before a network-wide deletion. Confirm the current site, role membership, and intended network scope before running the command. The wp user list reference notes that --network lists network users, while roles can differ from site to site; therefore, select by role in the target site context when the role is site-specific.

Dashboard or WP-CLI: which method fits?

Method Best suited to How users are selected Content and scope controls
WordPress Users screen Small or moderate selections and visual review Filter the table by role, then tick accounts Confirmation screen offers deletion or reassignment of posts and links; the signed-in user cannot be deleted this way
WP-CLI Large, scripted, or repeatable selections Query the role and output IDs, then pass IDs to wp user delete --reassign preserves post attribution; large lists may need batches; --network changes multisite scope

There is no official universal user-count threshold at which the dashboard becomes impractical. Choose the dashboard when account-by-account review is the priority; choose WP-CLI when command-line control, batching, or repeatability matters.

Final verification checklist

  • Is the role filter or role slug exactly the one intended?
  • Are you connected to the correct site and, on multisite, using the intended site-only or network scope?
  • Did you review the actual user IDs or selected accounts?
  • Will posts and links be deleted, or reassigned to a verified replacement user?
  • For WP-CLI, did you test the listing command first and account for batching if the result is large?

Once these answers are correct, complete the dashboard confirmation or execute the reviewed WP-CLI command.
