Build a reusable element library as a maintained source of truth, not a folder of copies. Inventory repeated decisions, define tokens and foundations, create atomic components, compose patterns, model predictable variation with variants and properties, document usage, publish reviewed assets, and govern updates. In Figma, a library is a collection of components, styles and variables that other files can reuse; published changes can be reviewed and applied to consuming instances.

What a reusable element library contains

A useful library has four connected layers:

  • Foundations: color, typography, spacing, grids, effects and variables.
  • Components: independent building blocks such as icons, buttons, labels and inputs.
  • Patterns: meaningful combinations such as forms, menus, cards, navigation and page scaffolds.
  • Guidance: names, descriptions, anatomy, states, content rules, accessibility requirements and implementation links.

Figma describes libraries as shared design assets intended for reuse across files. Components can be single controls or larger collections such as menus and layouts. On paid Figma plans, libraries can be published for use in other files; Starter users can create assets but cannot publish them for cross-file use.

1. Inventory repetition before creating components

Start with an inventory rather than immediately drawing buttons. Review product files and record repeated controls, content structures, brand decisions and interaction states.

Prioritize the expensive inconsistencies

  • List elements that appear frequently, such as form fields, navigation, buttons and status messages.
  • Mark decisions that cause rework when they diverge: spacing, type scale, color contrast, focus states and responsive behavior.
  • Group near-duplicates and identify whether the difference is intentional (for example, destructive versus neutral action) or accidental.
  • Choose a first release small enough to review. A focused set used by several screens is more maintainable than an enormous catalog nobody trusts.

For each candidate, write its purpose, consumers, states, owner and expected reuse boundary. If two objects never share behavior or meaning, forcing them into one component creates confusing properties.

2. Establish foundations and variables

Foundations prevent every component from inventing its own values. Define reusable styles for color, type, spacing, effects, grids and layout. Use variables for values that need centralized changes or modes, such as light and dark themes.

Use semantic, not appearance-only, names

Name a token by purpose, such as color.action.primary or space.control.gap, instead of blue-500 or gap-12. A semantic name survives a palette change and gives designers and developers the same vocabulary.

Make the foundation testable

  • Check text and control contrast in every supported theme.
  • Define a spacing scale and use it consistently inside and between components.
  • Specify typography roles, weights, line heights and truncation behavior.
  • Record grid columns, gutters, breakpoints and container rules.
  • Document effect usage, including elevation and focus indicators, rather than treating shadows as decoration.

Keep token names aligned with code names. The same vocabulary makes handoff, implementation and later audits substantially clearer.

3. Build atomic components with stable structure

Create primitives such as buttons, inputs, icons, labels, checkboxes and badges before assembling larger patterns. Keep their internal layers predictable: a button might contain a label, optional leading icon, optional trailing icon and focus indicator.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Define behavior as well as appearance

  • Specify default, hover, pressed, focused, disabled, loading and error states where applicable.
  • Define minimum target size, keyboard focus treatment and accessible name requirements.
  • Decide which layer accepts text, which accepts an instance swap, and which is fixed.
  • Use real content during review so wrapping, truncation and localization problems appear early.

Component boundaries should follow a meaningful reuse or behavior boundary. A component that merely groups arbitrary layers adds maintenance cost without giving consumers a useful contract.

4. Compose patterns from primitives

Combine atoms into molecules and organisms: fields into a form row, controls into a toolbar, and cards into a results layout. Reusable scaffolding such as rows, columns and uniform grids keeps composition consistent.

Keep composition flexible

  • Expose slots or instance swaps for content that legitimately varies.
  • Keep layout rules inside the pattern so consuming files do not need corrective overrides.
  • Separate content from structure; a card should not require a new component merely because its title changes.
  • Promote a pattern only after observing repeated use and a stable API of properties.

Use the same pattern names in design and code. When a developer sees the same term in both systems, documentation and implementation reviews become less ambiguous.

5. Model variation with variants and component properties

Use a component set when components serve the same purpose but differ along predictable axes. Variant properties can describe type, size, emphasis, state or theme. Component properties can expose booleans, text, instance swaps and supported slots.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose a small, explicit property model

Need Prefer Example
Predictable visual axis Variant property Size: small, medium, large
On/off optional element Boolean property Show leading icon
Editable copy Text property Button label
Replaceable nested object Instance-swap property Leading icon
Controlled content region Exposed slot, where supported Card footer

Avoid a separate component for every minor difference. Too many combinations make the picker hard to search and increase testing work. Conversely, do not hide meaningful behavior in an undocumented override: if consumers need it repeatedly, make it an explicit property.

Handle content-heavy systems deliberately

For systems with many strings, use text properties and variants rather than disconnected copies. Define length limits, capitalization, localization expectations and fallback behavior. Test long labels and translated text before publishing.

6. Name and document every public asset

Names are part of the library API. Use a consistent hierarchy that communicates purpose and aligns with implementation, for example Navigation/Tab or Forms/Text field. Keep variant property names parallel across related components.

Minimum documentation for a component

  • Purpose and when to use it.
  • Anatomy and the meaning of each layer or slot.
  • Available properties, valid values and state combinations.
  • Content rules, including length, tone and localization constraints.
  • Accessibility requirements, keyboard behavior and focus treatment.
  • Do and do-not examples, plus a link to implementation guidance when available.

Add descriptions and documentation links to components or component sets so consumers can understand intent without opening source layers. Document deliberate limitations; an honest “not supported” prevents unsafe overrides.

7. Separate work in progress from published assets

Keep main components in a dedicated system file and let product files consume instances. Work-in-progress experiments should not appear in the published catalog. Establish a review checklist covering visual states, responsive behavior, accessibility, naming, properties, documentation and code alignment.

  1. Build or change the source component in the system file.
  2. Test every property combination and representative content length.
  3. Review the change with design and implementation owners.
  4. Update description, examples and change notes.
  5. Publish only the reviewed asset.
  6. Open a consuming file and verify that the update notification and instance behavior are understandable.

Publishing an update triggers notifications in files that use the component. Consumers should inspect the change, test affected screens and apply it when the change is understood. Do not treat automatic availability as automatic approval.

8. Choose a library topology

One large library maximizes discoverability and token consistency, but a change can affect many products. Several domain libraries reduce blast radius and clarify ownership, but designers may search more than one place. Product-specific libraries offer autonomy, yet they can drift from shared foundations.

Model Advantages Risks to manage
Single shared library One vocabulary, easy discovery, centralized tokens Large update blast radius and review queue
Domain libraries Clear ownership and smaller release scope Cross-library duplication and inconsistent naming
Product libraries Fast local iteration and product-specific patterns Drift, duplicated foundations and harder maintenance

Choose using discoverability, ownership, naming and token consistency, variant complexity, documentation quality, design-code alignment, access limits and the team’s ability to review changes. A hybrid is often practical: one foundation library plus domain or product libraries for specialized patterns.

9. Govern the library continuously

Assign maintainers and define contribution, approval, deprecation and release rules. Record breaking changes and provide migration instructions. Review usage periodically and remove obsolete variants and unused assets instead of preserving every historical decision.

  • Ownership: name a maintainer and a backup for each domain.
  • Contribution: require an issue or proposal describing need, consumers and accessibility impact.
  • Release: classify changes as additive, corrective or breaking.
  • Deprecation: mark replacements, stop adding new usage and set a removal condition.
  • Audit: inspect detached instances, local overrides, duplicate tokens and undocumented properties.

Common failure modes and fixes

Consumers detach everything

Cause: the component does not expose a needed slot or property, or its defaults are wrong. Fix: observe the repeated override, decide whether it is a valid use case, then expose a controlled property or improve the default. Do not normalize detached copies as a substitute for API design.

The component set has an unmanageable matrix

Cause: every visual difference became a variant. Fix: separate meaningful axes, remove combinations that should never occur, and use booleans or instance swaps for optional pieces.

Design and code names diverge

Cause: each team created its own taxonomy. Fix: agree on a shared semantic vocabulary, rename source assets in a planned release, and document mapping for existing consumers.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Updates break product screens

Cause: a published change altered sizing, constraints, states or token values without downstream testing. Fix: classify the change, test representative consuming files, publish migration notes and allow teams to review notifications before applying updates.

People cannot find the right asset

Cause: vague names, duplicate components or missing descriptions. Fix: organize by purpose, add searchable descriptions, deprecate duplicates and provide a short “use this when” guide.

When should a variant become a separate component?

Use a separate component when the object has a different purpose, interaction model or documentation contract. Keep it in a variant set when users recognize it as the same component with a predictable difference.

How do I introduce a library to an existing product?

Start with an inventory, map duplicates to canonical assets, migrate a representative flow, and publish only after the team has tested updates in real consuming files. Then expand by frequency and inconsistency cost.

Who should approve a breaking change?

The maintainers responsible for the library and representatives of affected design and implementation teams should review it. Approval should include migration guidance and a clear deprecation or release note.
