Use MCP to separate interaction from evidence: install the Playwright MCP server, navigate and inspect pages with browser_snapshot, then call browser_take_screenshot only after the page reaches the state you need to document. Use an element target for a component, fullPage:true for a complete scrollable page, and neither for the current viewport. This workflow produces repeatable screenshots without relying on fragile image coordinates.
What an MCP screenshot workflow does
Model Context Protocol (MCP) lets an AI client call browser tools through a server. In a screenshot workflow, the model first changes the page state—opening a menu, accepting a dialog, filling a form, or waiting for content—and then records the result as an image. The important distinction is that screenshots are visual evidence, while structured snapshots are the interaction surface.
Playwright MCP supplies both pieces. browser_snapshot returns the page’s accessibility tree and stable references (often called refs). browser_take_screenshot captures the rendered page after those actions complete. A robust run alternates between snapshots for decisions and screenshots for checkpoints.
Prerequisites and server registration
Install the required runtime
- Node.js 20 or newer.
- An MCP-compatible client, such as VS Code, Cursor, Windsurf, Claude Code, Claude Desktop, or another client that supports MCP servers.
- Permission for the client process to launch a local Node command and write screenshot files.
Register Playwright MCP
The simplest setup uses npx, which downloads and runs the current package when the client starts it. Add a server entry in your client’s MCP configuration:

The repeatable capture procedure
1. Navigate, then snapshot
Tell the client to navigate to the target URL. Immediately request browser_snapshot. Do not attempt to click from an old screenshot: refs belong to the current page state and can change after navigation, a modal, or a rerender.
Navigate to https://example.com and return a browser_snapshot.Use the returned accessible names and refs to choose controls. This is more reliable than guessing coordinates or asking a vision model to identify pixels.

Use the refs from the latest snapshot to click, fill, select, or press keys. For example:
Using the current snapshot refs, open the “Pricing” menu, select “Annual”, and then take another browser_snapshot.Request a fresh snapshot after each navigation or major state change. If a ref is reported as missing, treat it as stale and snapshot again rather than retrying the same ref.

3. Capture the visual checkpoint
Call browser_take_screenshot only when the desired state is visible and stable. Its main controls are:
target: a snapshot ref or unique selector for one element.fullPage:true: the entire scrollable page.- Neither
targetnorfullPage: the visible viewport. type:png,jpeg, orwebp.scale:cssfor CSS-pixel dimensions (the default) ordevicefor device-pixel resolution.filename: a deterministic output name for a later pipeline step.

Take a browser_take_screenshot of the current viewport as WebP, scale css, filename checkout-annual.webp.For one component:
Take a browser_take_screenshot with target set to the unique selector for the pricing card, type png, filename pricing-card.png.For a full page:
Take a browser_take_screenshot with fullPage true, type png, scale css, filename pricing-full.png.Do not combine fullPage:true with an element target. A full-page image represents the scrollable document; an element capture represents only that node.

Lazy-loaded images may require scrolling or an explicit wait before a full-page capture. If a page has animations, wait for the animation to finish or use a selector-based wait so the screenshot is deterministic.
Resolution and file-format decisions
CSS scale versus device scale
scale:"css" preserves CSS-pixel dimensions and is usually the best choice for regression tests, documentation, and predictable file sizes. scale:"device" renders at device-pixel resolution, which is useful when the image will be inspected on a high-density display or compared with a retina reference.

PNG, JPEG, or WebP
- PNG: lossless text, UI edges, and transparency.
- JPEG: smaller photographic files when transparency is unnecessary.
- WebP: compact delivery with broad modern-browser support.
Choose one format consistently in a visual-diff pipeline; changing formats can create differences unrelated to the page itself.
Making runs deterministic
- Wait for a meaningful selector, not an arbitrary short delay, when content is asynchronous.
- Use a fixed viewport and color scheme for repeatable dimensions and colors.
- Capture after fonts, images, and client-side data have loaded.
- Keep interaction and capture separate: snapshot-driven actions first, screenshot checkpoints second.
- Set a deterministic filename when another process consumes the artifact.
For difficult failures, enable tracing through the appropriate capability group. A trace can include DOM snapshots, screenshots, network activity, and console logs at each step, giving you more evidence than a final image alone.
Optional capability groups and tracing
Core navigation and snapshot tools are enabled by default. Add only capabilities your workflow needs:
- vision: canvas or visual interaction.
- pdf: PDF-oriented operations.
- devtools: tracing and debugging.
- network: network inspection or control.
- storage: storage and session work.
- testing: test-specific behavior.
Extra capabilities increase the tool surface presented to the model. Keeping the default set small can make tool selection clearer; enable a group when its behavior is required rather than preloading everything.
Run Playwright MCP as a standalone HTTP service
A local stdio-style server is convenient when the MCP client owns the process. For a CI worker, a separate automation process, or several clients, expose the server over HTTP:

npx @playwright/mcp@latest --port 8931Point the MCP client at http://localhost:8931/mcp. The HTTP session heartbeat defaults to five seconds. Slow proxies or clients may need a longer interval by setting PLAYWRIGHT_MCP_PING_TIMEOUT_MS; setting it to 0 disables the heartbeat. Keep the service on a protected network and avoid exposing an unauthenticated browser endpoint to the public internet.
Common failures and fixes
The MCP tools do not appear
Check that Node.js is version 20 or newer, the JSON is valid, and the client was restarted after editing its configuration. Run the npx command manually to reveal download or permission errors.
A ref cannot be clicked
Refs are tied to the current page state. Navigate, open a dialog, or rerendering can invalidate them. Request a new browser_snapshot and use the replacement ref.
The screenshot shows a loading shell
Wait for a stable selector, network idle, or the specific content that proves the page is ready. For lazy content, scroll it into view before capturing. A fixed delay alone is less reliable because network speed varies.
Full-page capture is unexpectedly short
Confirm that fullPage:true is set and that no element target is supplied. Check whether the site uses an internal scroll container; in that case, capture the container as an element or scroll it before a viewport capture.

HTTP sessions disconnect
Inspect proxy idle limits and heartbeat settings. Increase PLAYWRIGHT_MCP_PING_TIMEOUT_MS for slow infrastructure, or use 0 only when your environment has another reliable liveness mechanism.
Visual diffs change between runs
Fix viewport, scale, fonts, timezone, data state, and animation timing. Capture after the same readiness condition each time, and use tracing to identify network or console errors.
