Build an MCP router by creating a client-facing FastMCP server, attaching one proxy for each upstream MCP server with create_proxy(), and mounting those proxies with FastMCP.mount(). You can also add local tools to the same server. This is MCP component composition—not, by itself, an HTTP load balancer or a production authentication layer.
The examples below follow the patterns in the FastMCP proxy documentation. Those docs track a moving branch, so they do not establish a tested release or dependency lockfile. Pin FastMCP and your MCP protocol/SDK versions, then verify the code and transports against that exact setup before deployment.
What an MCP router does—and what it does not
A FastMCP router gives an MCP client one server endpoint while connecting that server to local functionality and one or more upstream MCP servers. A proxy acts as an MCP client toward an upstream and presents its components through a server-facing interface. Mounting the proxy makes those components available through the parent server.
This arrangement differs from an HTTP gateway that chooses a backend for each incoming HTTP request. The FastMCP composition below is the core MCP router. An edge gateway or load balancer is an optional deployment layer, with separate protocol and compatibility requirements.

Build a router for one upstream server
Start with a single upstream to establish the connection and transport behavior before adding more backends. The following minimal pattern is adapted from FastMCP’s proxy documentation; it is not a claim of a tested code sample for a specific package release.
from fastmcp import FastMCP
from fastmcp.server import create_proxy
router = FastMCP("Router")
backend = create_proxy("http://backend.example/mcp")
router.mount(backend)
if __name__ == "__main__":
router.run()
Replace the example URL with the actual MCP endpoint and select the frontend transport and launch configuration required by your pinned FastMCP version. In this pattern the client connects to router; the proxy connects to the upstream. Do not assume that the URL, transport, or authentication settings are interchangeable across versions.
Mount a configured group of backends
For a fixed set of upstreams, the proxy documentation also shows a multi-server configuration: name each server in configuration and mount one proxy per configured backend onto the router. This centralizes the backend list; it does not remove the need to configure, secure, and test each upstream.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Use meaningful backend names such as weather and calendar in the configuration. Verify how your pinned FastMCP release exposes backend identity and names to clients, including whether and how tool names are presented. Do not infer a naming convention or collision behavior that the selected release’s documentation does not specify.
Choose direct mounts or multi-server configuration
| Approach | Fits best | Tradeoff |
|---|---|---|
| Mount a proxy directly | A small, fixed topology or one upstream | Simple and explicit; you manage each proxy and its backend configuration. |
| Multi-server proxy configuration | A named, configured set of upstream servers | Centralizes the backend list and creates a proxy per configured server; verify naming and failure behavior in your pinned release. |
Add local tools beside proxied components
A router can expose local tools as well as upstream components. FastMCP describes its server as a container for tools, resources, and prompts, and its proxy documentation demonstrates local and proxied components together.

from fastmcp import FastMCP
from fastmcp.server import create_proxy
router = FastMCP("Router")
backend = create_proxy("http://backend.example/mcp")
@router.tool()
def router_status() -> str:
"""Return a local status message."""
return "Router process is running"
router.mount(backend)
if __name__ == "__main__":
router.run()
The status tool above is application code, not automatic health checking supplied by the proxy. Similarly, cross-backend orchestration or a utility that combines backend results is your logic to implement. Decide what such local tools should report when one upstream is unavailable, and avoid reporting an upstream as healthy merely because the router process started.
Choose frontend and backend transports separately
FastMCP proxies can bridge transports—for example, making an HTTP backend available through a stdio-facing server, or the reverse. Specify the client-facing transport and each upstream transport independently, then verify the bridge with the client and server versions you intend to deploy.
For a remote HTTP deployment, record the actual endpoint, where TLS terminates, and which credentials are used on each hop. Proxy composition does not automatically configure TLS, production secrets, authorization policy, or credential forwarding. If embedding MCP in a larger web app, FastMCP recommends mounting into FastAPI or Starlette; its HTTP deployment documentation warns that the Streamable HTTP app’s lifespan context must be passed to the enclosing Starlette application. Check lifecycle wiring and endpoint paths in the chosen release.
Account for lazy upstream connections
FastMCP’s current proxy documentation describes proxies as lazy bridges. Creating a proxy and starting the local server do not necessarily connect to the upstream. Initialization begins when an MCP client initializes the proxy. As a result, a router process may appear to start successfully while a bad URL, unavailable upstream, non-MCP endpoint, or failed authentication only becomes visible when a client connects.
Test both stages: process startup and a real client connection that exercises every backend. Make an upstream failure visible to clients and operators rather than treating successful local startup as proof of backend health.

Match routing and deployment to the MCP protocol revision
Protocol-era behavior matters when proxies and gateways are involved. The MCP project’s 2026-07-28 specification release article describes that revision of Streamable HTTP as stateless at the protocol layer: it removes the initialize/initialized exchange and Mcp-Session-Id, and requests are self-describing. The article says any request can reach any server instance. That is not a safe assumption for every client and backend pair: earlier handshake-era behavior still exists, and FastMCP’s proxy documentation describes the proxy mirroring the frontend era when it connects upstream.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsState which revision your example and deployment support. Do not mix revision-specific routing assumptions into a version-agnostic gateway. If a tool needs continuity across calls, carry the required state explicitly in tool arguments or an application-level store rather than relying on hidden transport session state in the modern stateless model.
Optional HTTP edge routing for the 2026-07-28 revision
For modern Streamable HTTP traffic, FastMCP documents routing headers that an edge gateway can use as hints:
Mcp-Method: a JSON-RPC method, such astools/call.Mcp-Name: the target name for a named operation, such as a tool or prompt name, or a resource URI.Mcp-Param-*: selected argument values when a tool parameter opts into thex-mcp-headerschema extension.
FastMCP’s HTTP transport leaves these headers intact. The routing headers express intent; the request body remains the source of truth and must be validated. For example, check that the method and named target in headers agree with the JSON-RPC body before dispatch. Treat opted-in parameter headers as hints, not trusted authorization decisions.
Older or legacy clients may not send these headers. A gateway should provide a deliberate fallback: inspect and validate the body where appropriate, or route headerless traffic to a controlled default backend. Dropping every request that lacks modern headers can break clients that do not use this wire format. The MCP release article describes method/name routing headers as required for the modern Streamable HTTP revision, so version-gate edge behavior and ensure the gateway and FastMCP endpoint agree on protocol support.

Set security boundaries at every hop
A single endpoint can make access policy easier to centralize, but mounting a proxy is not a complete security configuration. FastMCP identifies authentication and authorization as proxy use cases; the MCP release article discusses authorization hardening, issuer validation, credential binding, and a move toward Client ID Metadata Documents. These source descriptions do not amount to a universal secure deployment recipe.
- Authenticate clients at the client-facing endpoint and define what each authenticated client may call.
- Decide which upstream credential the router uses for each backend; do not forward a client’s credentials indiscriminately.
- Validate routing headers against request bodies and authorize the resolved operation, rather than trusting a routing hint.
- Test authorization independently at the gateway and at every upstream, including that one backend’s credentials are not reused with another.
- Store secrets using your deployment’s established secrets-management process; do not hard-code them in router source.
Test failures, compatibility, and operational behavior
Before exposing the router to users, test the entire path from client through router to each backend. A useful release checklist is:
- Pin FastMCP and MCP protocol/SDK versions. The moving documentation pages do not establish a tested version set or lockfile.
- Start the router, then connect a client. Test upstream unavailable, malformed URL, non-MCP endpoint, and authentication failure cases to expose lazy initialization errors.
- Test the frontend and backend transports separately, then test the intended transport bridge end to end.
- If backward compatibility matters, test an older handshake-era client as well as a client using the modern revision. Confirm headerless requests use the intended safe fallback.
- For modern traffic, test disagreement between method/name headers and the request body, plus malformed or unauthorized parameter values.
- Test authorization and credential isolation for every backend.
- Test concurrent clients and session isolation on the exact FastMCP release you deploy. The proxy documentation describes concurrent handling and isolation, but that is not an independent test result for your configuration.
Reliability and scaling notes
For a modern stateless endpoint, a conventional load balancer can distribute requests across instances without protocol session affinity, according to the MCP release article. This does not eliminate application state requirements, nor does it make earlier session-based connections stateless. No latency or throughput benchmark is established here; measure your own network, upstream response times, and workload before making performance claims.
For operations, monitor connection and upstream failures separately, and ensure errors distinguish router startup from backend initialization and request execution. Decide whether a failing backend should affect only its own operations or prevent router initialization in your chosen configuration; verify actual behavior in the pinned release.

| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or do |
|---|---|---|
| Router starts, but client initialization fails | Lazy proxy connection encounters an unavailable or invalid upstream, a non-MCP endpoint, or authentication failure. | Connect a client while observing router and upstream logs; verify endpoint, transport, and credentials. |
| Client cannot reach the router | Frontend transport or launch configuration differs from what the client expects. | Verify the router’s selected transport and endpoint against the client configuration and pinned FastMCP docs. |
| Backend tools or names are confusing or missing | Configuration, mount, or naming behavior differs from assumptions or release behavior. | Check each backend is configured and mounted; inspect the pinned release’s rules for component exposure and name handling. |

| Gateway dispatches to the wrong backend | Routing headers and request body disagree, or header values are trusted without validation. | Validate method and target against the body and authorize the resolved operation before dispatch. |
| One backend receives another backend’s credentials | Credentials are forwarded globally rather than selected by backend policy. | Use explicit per-backend credential handling and test isolation at every hop. |

Frequently Asked Questions
Does a FastMCP proxy make the router an HTTP load balancer?
No. It composes MCP components behind a client-facing MCP server. Per-request HTTP backend selection is a separate edge-gateway function.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Can an MCP router combine local tools and remote backends?
Yes. Define local tools on the parent FastMCP server and mount proxies for upstream servers alongside them.
Should a modern HTTP gateway require routing headers from every MCP client?
Only when the gateway and client are using the matching modern Streamable HTTP revision. Older clients may omit them, so configure a deliberate fallback.
