Build a WordPress site around useful product content, apply to Amazon Associates, and use properly tagged Amazon links. WooCommerce is optional: use it if a storefront-style catalog, categories, or filters will help readers browse. Amazon handles the checkout; your site sends visitors to Amazon and may earn qualifying referral income.
Choose a content site or a storefront-style catalog
First decide how readers should find products. A content-first site organizes buying guides, comparisons, reviews, and category pages as WordPress content, with Amazon links placed where they help readers act. It is usually the simpler starting point if publishing useful articles matters more than browsing a large product grid.
A storefront-style site adds WooCommerce product pages and can group products into categories or other browsing paths. For Amazon products, these are external or affiliate products: the product page presents the item on your site, while its call-to-action sends the visitor to Amazon. It does not make your WordPress site the seller or move Amazon checkout onto your site.
| Approach | Best fit | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Content-first WordPress | A focused site built around guides, comparisons, and editorial recommendations. | Quick to organize around articles, but product browsing depends on your content and navigation. |
| WooCommerce with manual external products | A small catalog where editors want control over each product page and link. | Each listing and link needs hands-on setup and rechecking. |
| WooCommerce with an importer | A larger catalog where product discovery and scheduled data synchronization would be useful. | Adds dependence on an importer, its maintenance and marketplace support, API access, and synchronization reliability. |
WooCommerce documents manual External/Affiliate Product setup and separately documents AmaSync for importing and synchronizing Amazon product catalogs. Those are implementation options, not requirements for joining Amazon Associates. Check current extension terms, compatibility, and any API eligibility requirements before you build around an importer.

Set up WordPress and prepare the site
Choose a focused subject and plan pages that help readers decide: buying criteria, comparisons, use cases, and product-specific coverage. Before applying to Associates, publish useful material rather than presenting an empty catalog. Amazon’s Associates help guidance says sites should generally have recent content, typically published within the last 60 days during review.
Set up the operational basics: a maintained hosting service, HTTPS, backups, a lightweight theme, and analytics. These are practical implementation choices, not Amazon-mandated host or theme requirements.
Apply to Amazon Associates
- Open Amazon Associates for the marketplace you intend to use and submit the exact website URLs Amazon will review.
- Complete the account and payment information requested in the application.
- Make the site accessible and ensure its content reflects the subject and audience you describe.
- Identify yourself as an Amazon Associate using the disclosure language Amazon currently requires. Consult Amazon Associates Help for the applicable wording and placement expectations.
Approval, commission amounts, and access to product-data tools are not guaranteed by setting up WordPress. Requirements and available tools can depend on the marketplace and the status of your Associates account.

Create and place properly tagged links
Amazon’s Associates Program operates through Special Links—Amazon links formatted with your Associates tracking information. The Amazon Associates Program Operating Agreement explains that qualifying customer activity through those links can generate commission income, subject to the agreement. Use Amazon’s Associates linking tools to create links for the relevant marketplace and account; do not substitute an ordinary untagged product URL where attribution matters.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsPlace links in context: for example, next to a product discussed in a comparison or at the point where a guide explains who should consider it. Label calls to action plainly so readers understand they are leaving your site for Amazon. Test the destination and tracking link after publishing.
Add Amazon products to WordPress
For a small WooCommerce catalog: add products manually
- In WordPress, open Products and choose to add a product.
- Select External/Affiliate Product as the product type.
- Enter the product information you have permission to use, then paste the tagged Amazon product URL into the external product URL field.
- Set a clear call-to-action button and publish the product page.
- Open the published page and test that its button leads to the intended Amazon destination.
This workflow follows WooCommerce’s documentation for external and affiliate products. It gives a product a store-like page on WordPress, but the purchase and fulfillment remain on Amazon. Keep the product claims accurate and revisit links during editorial updates.

For a larger catalog: assess an importer
WooCommerce’s AmaSync documentation describes product discovery, importing, catalog management, and synchronization using Amazon Creators API. It also describes settings for displaying prices and scheduled synchronization. Before relying on an importer, verify its current support for your marketplace and WordPress setup, whether your account can use the required API, and how it handles Amazon’s current content rules.
AmaSync uses WP-Cron for scheduled synchronization. WooCommerce warns that WP-Cron can be delayed on low-traffic sites; a server-level cron may improve reliability. Automation can reduce routine manual updates, but it does not remove the need to check product data, links, and policy compliance.
Write original, decision-useful product content
Explain the intended use, who a product may suit, relevant trade-offs, and what readers should compare before choosing. Distinguish verified product information from your own assessment, and do not imply hands-on testing unless it actually took place. Do not copy Amazon customer reviews or reproduce marketplace pages wholesale.

Keep the site useful independently of its links: buying criteria and clear comparisons help readers understand why an item is included, rather than leaving them with a product grid and a button.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Disclose affiliate links and respect Amazon’s content rules
Show the required Amazon Associate identification where readers can see it near monetized content, and use the current wording specified by Amazon. Maintain any additional privacy, cookie, and advertising disclosures that apply to the jurisdictions your site serves.
Amazon’s Associates agreement and license govern use of Program Content, which can include product data, images, text, link formats, widgets, APIs, and other tools. Use that material only as permitted for the program. Amazon’s policies restrict uses such as data mining and similar extraction. Use approved tools rather than scraping product pages or copying marketplace images, descriptions, and review material freely.
Best Value
Do not hard-code prices or availability as if they were permanent. If you display Amazon-supplied data, confirm that the method is approved and follow the current rules for refreshing and caching it. A plugin’s ability to import or display data does not by itself establish that a particular use complies with Amazon’s terms.
Maintain the catalog and measure results
Product details, availability, and links can change. For manually managed products, recheck the destination and the claims on the page during editorial updates. With synchronization, monitor whether scheduled updates are completing and whether data remains accurate; a delayed job can leave a catalog out of date.
Use Amazon Associates Central and your site analytics to monitor relevant outcomes, such as outbound clicks, engagement with product pages, indexed content, and reported revenue. Treat these as signals for improving the site, not as a basis for promising earnings or conversion rates. The available evidence does not establish a typical income or approval rate.
When a hybrid affiliate setup makes sense
If your business also sells its own products, WooCommerce’s Affiliate and Referral extension can support a separate, site-managed referral program with features such as affiliate links, coupons, registration, commission rules, dashboards, and payouts. That internal program is distinct from Amazon Associates; explain the difference clearly rather than implying one replaces the other.
