Google Slides does not document a standard blur control for images. Its built-in image adjustments—opacity, brightness, contrast, and recolor—can change how an image looks, but they do not soften its details. To genuinely blur a picture, edit it in an image editor, then insert the edited copy into Slides.
What Google Slides’ image controls can do
On desktop, select the image, then go to Format → Format options → Adjustments. Google’s current help lists opacity, brightness, and contrast adjustments; recolor is also available among its image controls. The documented controls do not include a blur filter. Menu wording or placement can vary as Google updates the interface. Google’s image-adjustment instructions use “Opacity,” while older Google material calls the control “Transparency” and refers to “Image options.” Google’s earlier announcement shows that older terminology.
- Opacity or transparency: Lets more of the slide background show through; it does not soften detail.
- Brightness: Makes the image lighter or darker.
- Contrast: Changes the difference between light and dark areas.
- Recolor: Applies a color treatment.
These can help make a background less prominent, but none is a substitute for blur.

Blur an entire image before adding it to Slides
Use an image editor with a blur control, then insert the exported image. Adobe Express is one browser-based example; its blur tool lets you upload an image, adjust blur, and download the result. Open Adobe Express’s image-blur tool.

- Keep a copy of the original image.
- Open the image in an editor with a blur filter. In Adobe Express, upload the image and select its Adjustments controls.
- Choose Blur and set the amount with the slider or numerical value.
- Download or export the edited image. Use the largest practical resolution to avoid unwanted softness from a small or compressed export.
- In Google Slides, choose Insert → Image, then upload the edited copy or add it from Google Drive.
- Resize and position it on the slide.
Adobe lists a Free plan on its pricing page; features and terms can vary by location and change over time. A paid plan is not necessary just to use an image editor you already have.
Blur only a face, object, or text area
Google Slides does not document a built-in brush, selection, masking, or face-blur workflow for part of an image. For a face, license plate, email address, name in a screenshot, or background object, edit the image first in a tool that supports a brush, selection, mask, or object detection. Export the result and insert it into Slides as a replacement image.

If the material is sensitive, do not rely on blur as secure redaction: details may remain inferable. Cover the information with an opaque block, crop it out, remove it from the source, or avoid sharing the original asset.

Make a blurred background behind text
- Blur the background image in an external editor and export it.
- Insert the edited image in Slides and size it to fill the slide, or set it as the slide background if that suits your layout.
- Add a text box above the image.
- If the text needs more separation, place a solid or semi-transparent shape behind the text and ensure the text has sufficient contrast.
A translucent shape can improve readability, but it does not blur the image beneath it. If you only need the background to be less prominent, lowering the image’s opacity or adjusting contrast in Slides may be enough.

Use image adjustments on Android
Google’s Android instructions list adjustment controls, not a blur tool. In the Slides app, open the presentation, tap the image, tap Format → Adjustments, then change transparency, brightness, or contrast. See Google’s Android image-adjustment instructions.

Reset native Slides adjustments
To undo adjustments made in Slides, right-click the image and choose Reset image. Google says this returns the image to the original photo added to the file. See Google’s instructions for resetting an image.

Replace an externally blurred image
If you inserted a separately edited, blurred file, Reset image will not restore detail removed by the blur. Replace it with the original image file. Keep the original and edited versions separately if you may need to revise the effect later.

If the result looks softer than expected, check the exported file outside Slides. A smaller export, compressed JPEG, repeated re-saving, or a screenshot can reduce quality. If the exported file is sharp but the slide looks soft, compare it at the presentation’s display resolution and check browser zoom before changing the blur settings.
