Use Settings → Screen Time → Content & Privacy Restrictions → App Store, Media, Web, & Games → Web Content → Limit Adult Websites to filter many adult websites on an iPhone. Add specific domains to Never Allow. For a young child who only needs a handful of sites, choose Only Approved Websites instead. These free Apple controls are a useful starting point, but they do not block every explicit image, app, or route to adult content.
Block adult websites with Screen Time
On the iPhone being restricted, open Settings and follow this path:
- Tap Screen Time.
- Tap Content & Privacy Restrictions and turn it on.
- Tap App Store, Media, Web, & Games, then Web Content.
- Select Limit Adult Websites.
- To block a particular site, scroll to Never Allow, tap Add Website, and enter its address or domain.
Apple describes this setting as a way to limit adult websites; it is not a guarantee that every explicit page will be detected. Menu labels or placement can vary with iOS version, region, and family setup. If you do not see the exact wording, look for Web Content within Screen Time’s content restrictions. Screen Time offers three web-content choices:
- Unrestricted: no web-content restriction.
- Limit Adult Websites: filters many adult sites and lets you add addresses to Never Allow.
- Only Approved Websites: uses an allowlist; sites not approved are restricted.
Only Approved Websites is the strictest built-in web option and can suit a young child or a tightly managed phone. The trade-off is convenience: ordinary sites may need to be approved individually. Neither option should be treated as a complete filter for every app or type of media.

Make restrictions harder to undo
A web filter offers little protection if the person using the phone can switch it off. Set a Screen Time passcode that is different from the iPhone unlock passcode, and do not share it with the person whose access you are restricting. For a child, use Family Sharing to manage Screen Time from a parent’s Apple device where possible. Apple notes that family controls work best when family devices are up to date; some settings may allow a child to request an exception. To reduce easy workarounds, review these controls under Screen Time’s content and privacy settings. Exact submenus can vary by iOS version:

- App downloads and purchases: restrict installing, deleting, or redownloading apps as appropriate. This can help prevent adding another browser or a VPN app.
- App ratings: limit apps above the age rating you choose.
- Allowed Apps & Features: turn off supported built-in apps or features that should not be available. Turning one off hides it; it does not delete it.
- Ask to Buy: for a child in a Family Sharing group, require parental approval for eligible downloads and purchases.
- App Limits and Downtime: set time limits or schedules for apps or categories that are a concern.
- Changes to settings: restrict selected account or other setting changes where the available Screen Time controls allow it.
These measures can make bypassing less convenient, but they do not make it impossible. A determined user may have access to another device, network, account, or content source. Apple’s Screen Time guide explains the available restrictions.

If the iPhone is set up as a child’s device in your Family Sharing group, open Settings → Screen Time on the parent’s device, select the child, and configure the content restrictions there. Set the web limit, choose app and purchase restrictions that fit the child’s age, and keep the Screen Time passcode with the parent. The precise layout can change between iOS versions.

Blocking websites alone will not address explicit content in social feeds, messaging, video, image-search, cloud-storage, or AI apps. Review which apps are installed and what access is appropriate for the child. Consider explaining the rules in an age-appropriate way, rather than relying on monitoring alone. For an adult blocking access on their own iPhone
The same Screen Time settings can help adults who want to avoid pornography, reduce unwanted exposure, or support a personal recovery goal. But a self-imposed limit is easy to change if you control its passcode and settings. For more resistance to bypassing:

- Choose Limit Adult Websites or, if practical, Only Approved Websites.
- Ask a trusted accountability partner to hold the Screen Time passcode. Agree in advance on how you will handle legitimate changes.
- Restrict app installation and remove or limit browsers and apps that are frequent sources of unwanted content.
- Use Downtime or App Limits during the times you are most likely to seek out content.
- If you need reporting, broader filtering, or another person to manage controls, evaluate a filtering or accountability service and check what it collects and who can see it.
These are optional tools, not a substitute for the kind of personal or professional support someone may want. Pick a level of restriction that fits your needs and privacy preferences.

What Screen Time does—and does not—cover
Screen Time’s Web Content control is for web access. Explicit material can also appear in social-media feeds, group chats, messaging, user-generated video, image search, cloud links, email, shared files, or an app’s own browser. It may also arrive through another browser, a different domain, cellular data, a VPN or proxy, another network, or another device. Adding one address to Never Allow does not necessarily block mirrors, alternate domains, embedded media, or copies shared elsewhere.

For more coverage, a DNS or network filter may help across devices on a home network, but it will not automatically protect a phone on cellular data or a different network. VPNs, privacy-routing features, or changed DNS settings may affect network filtering. A device-level service may offer additional controls, but can bring subscription costs, monitoring and privacy trade-offs, setup complexity, and possible uninstall or disable routes. No option should be described as a guarantee against every bypass.

Apple’s Communication Safety can warn about or blur suspected nude images in certain supported child-safety contexts, including some Apple communication and sharing experiences. It is focused on sensitive-image safety; it does not filter every adult website, image, video, app, or message. It complements rather than replaces Screen Time restrictions. When a paid filter may be worth considering
Start with Screen Time if you mainly need free website restrictions on one iPhone. Consider a paid service if you need cross-device coverage, app controls, activity alerts, accountability, or filtering claims that go beyond domain blocking. Compare supported devices and iOS limitations, privacy policy, what data is monitored, who receives reports, uninstall protection, cancellation and refund terms, and the current price. Vendor claims about image or video detection are claims by the vendor, not a promise that every explicit item will be caught.

It may suit someone seeking those features; check its current pricing and terms. Canopy’s published plan presentations differ, so verify the checkout price.
- Qustodio offers a broader parental-control suite, including web filtering, app and screen-time controls, activity reports, and location features. It may fit families wanting several controls in one service; check current pricing on its official site and in the iOS App Store listing.
- Bark emphasizes monitoring and alerts for online-safety concerns alongside blocking features. Its iPhone/iPad approach has platform-specific requirements, including Bark Sync for some workflows; review its iOS details and current pricing before choosing it.
These products serve different needs; none should be assumed to prevent every route to explicit content. Prices and plans can vary by region, billing channel, promotion, and date. Read the privacy terms carefully, especially if the service will monitor a child’s or adult’s activity.
Troubleshooting
The Web Content option is missing
- Confirm that Screen Time is enabled and Content & Privacy Restrictions is turned on.
- Look under App Store, Media, Web, & Games for Web Content, rather than looking only in Safari settings.
- If managing a child, select the child’s name under Screen Time on the parent’s device.
- Update to the latest iOS version available for the device. If it is managed by a school, employer, or other organization, a management profile may affect settings.
- For Family Sharing, check the settings again after devices have updated and had time to synchronize.
A website still opens
- Confirm Web Content is set to Limit Adult Websites or Only Approved Websites.
- Add the exact site address or domain under Never Allow.
- Test in each installed browser; check whether the page opens inside another app instead.
- Review other browsers, VPN or proxy apps, DNS tools, and configuration profiles that may affect filtering.
- Check whether the material is coming through a social, messaging, video, image, or cloud-storage app rather than a website.
- Restart the iPhone and retest. For a child’s phone, verify the parent’s Family Sharing selection and Screen Time settings.
If the problem is a forgotten Screen Time passcode, use Apple’s official recovery process rather than guessing repeatedly. For child-managed settings, the family organizer or parent may need to make the change. The available recovery steps depend on how Screen Time was set up.
