On most Samsung Galaxy phones with Samsung’s Phone app, open Phone > More options (the three dots) > Settings > Block numbers. Enter the number and tap Add. To stop texts as well as calls, check the blocking controls in the messaging app you use. Menu names and behavior can vary by model, carrier, app, and software version.
Block a number in the Samsung Phone app
- Open Phone.
- Tap More options (the three vertical dots), then Settings.
- Tap Block numbers.
- Enter the phone number and tap Add (or the plus button).
On supported phones, you can select a number from Recents, Messages, or Contacts instead of typing it. Samsung’s number-blocking instructions show the current settings route. If your menus differ, your Galaxy may use another Phone app or a carrier-specific software version.
Block a caller from Recents
Open Phone > Recents, tap the unwanted number or its information icon, and look for Block or Block/Report number. Confirm if prompted. Depending on the Phone app and One UI version, you may need to open the call details or a secondary menu first. See Samsung’s guidance for blocking callers.

Block a saved contact
- Open Contacts and choose the contact.
- Tap More, then Block contact.
- Confirm by tapping Block.
Blocking does not delete the contact; it remains in your Contacts list. Samsung documents this alongside its other Galaxy blocking methods.

Block text messages too
If you use Samsung Messages, open the conversation, or touch and hold it in the conversation list. Tap More > Block and confirm. You can also look under Messages > More options > Settings > Block numbers and spam; labels may differ by version.
If your goal is to stop both calls and texts, check both the Phone app and your active messaging app. Samsung Phone, Samsung Messages, Phone by Google, and Google Messages have separate controls, and blocking in one should not be assumed to cover every app or service. In Google Messages, use the conversation’s own block or spam-report controls.

Block private callers or filter spam
Unknown or private numbers
In Samsung Phone, go to Phone > More options > Settings > Block numbers and look for Block calls from unknown numbers. Read the explanatory text shown on your phone before enabling it: Samsung’s wording and behavior can vary. Broad unknown-caller blocking may prevent legitimate calls from people or organizations you have not saved.

Spam and scam calls
Some Galaxy phones offer Caller ID and spam protection or a separate Block spam and scam calls setting under Phone settings. Where available, you may be able to choose Block all spam and scam calls or Only block high-risk scam calls. All-spam filtering is more aggressive; high-risk-only filtering may let more nuisance calls through but can reduce the chance of filtering a legitimate unfamiliar caller. Controls and availability vary by model, carrier, and software. Samsung describes these options in its Galaxy call-settings guide.
Spam identification is not a guarantee: callers can spoof displayed numbers or switch numbers. A manual block targets a particular number; spam filtering attempts to identify a broader category. Caller-ID and spam features may process call information under the service’s privacy terms. Google describes data handling for its caller-ID and spam protection. Enhanced features are not universal; Samsung’s current US support information limits its enhanced AI Scam detection to Galaxy phones running Android 16 with One UI 8.5 or higher. That limitation does not apply to basic manual blocking.

What blocking does—and does not—do
A manually blocked number is added to a blocked list, and calls from it should no longer ring normally. The exact handling of call history, texts, and voicemail depends on the dialer, messaging app, visual voicemail setup, and carrier. Do not assume a blocked caller cannot leave voicemail: Samsung advises contacting your carrier if you need a particular caller’s voicemail blocked.
Blocking one displayed number also cannot stop a caller who changes numbers or spoofs another number. It does not automatically block contact through WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, Telegram, or other internet-calling and messaging apps; block the person inside those apps as well.

Unblock a number
In Samsung Phone, open Phone > More options > Settings > Block numbers, then tap the remove or red minus control beside the number. In Contacts, open the contact, tap More > Unblock contact.
In Phone by Google, go to Phone > More > Settings > Blocked numbers, tap Clear beside the number, then tap Unblock. The names and controls may vary slightly by app version.
If the number still gets through
- Check the Phone block list. Make sure the number shown there matches the caller ID, including its country or area code.
- Check your messaging app separately. Review its blocked numbers or spam list if texts continue.
- Consider number spoofing or rotation. A block applies to the number being presented, not necessarily the person or organization behind the call.
- Review spam settings. Spam filtering is distinct from manually blocking a specific number; choose a level that does not screen out calls you need.
- Check other calling apps. Block the contact within the app used to place the call or send the message.
- Update your Galaxy. Go to Settings > Software update > Download and install, then check whether the menu has moved.
- Contact your carrier for voicemail or network-level filtering. Your carrier controls some voicemail behavior and may offer its own call-blocking tools.
Samsung’s call and message troubleshooting guidance also recommends checking blocked lists, updating software, and contacting the carrier for some issues.
Samsung Phone or Phone by Google?
Look at the app you open to place calls and its settings. Samsung Phone generally uses Block numbers; Phone by Google uses Blocked numbers. The steps above are for the Samsung app unless the Google alternative is explicitly noted. If the Samsung menu is missing, check which Phone app is installed and search its settings for the blocking controls. Model, carrier, region, and software differences can also affect availability.
