To back up WordPress to OneDrive, use a backup plugin with OneDrive support, authorize your Microsoft account in the plugin, select the files-and-database scope you need, schedule copies, and set a retention limit. Then confirm that a completed backup appears in OneDrive and identify the plugin’s restore command before you rely on it.

What a WordPress backup must contain

A full backup contains both your WordPress files and its database. Files include the WordPress core, themes, plugins, uploads, and other site data stored on the server. The database contains posts, pages, settings, users, comments, and other structured content.

A partial backup may contain only files or only the database. Partial copies are useful for focused tasks, but a files-only copy is not a complete site recovery plan. For a site-wide recovery, retain both components.

Choose a plugin that supports OneDrive

OneDrive is configured through a WordPress backup plugin rather than through WordPress itself. Check the plugin’s current edition and feature list before installation: cloud destinations and restore tools can differ between free and paid editions.

Plugin OneDrive availability Documented controls Restore information
WPvivid OneDrive is listed as a supported cloud destination. Confirm the currently available edition and interface. Manual and scheduled backups, cloud-storage configuration, destination folders, and retention settings are documented features. The plugin describes restoring a backup from the WordPress administration dashboard.
UpdraftPlus Microsoft OneDrive is listed as a paid-version feature. Confirm current plan availability for your installation. Its documentation covers connecting OneDrive and configuring remote storage; exact controls depend on the edition. Use the restore workflow provided by the installed edition and its current documentation.

These are vendor-documented capabilities, not an independent comparison of speed, security, or reliability. Product editions and screens can change.

Connect WPvivid to Microsoft OneDrive

The following route follows WPvivid’s documented OneDrive setup for its Backup & Migration Pro workflow. Labels may differ in another edition or a later release.

  1. In WordPress, open WPvivid Plugin → Cloud Storage.
  2. Select Microsoft OneDrive.
  3. Start authentication and sign in to the Microsoft account that should hold the backups. Approve the requested access.
  4. Define a parent folder in OneDrive, then specify a website subfolder so this site’s copies are easy to identify.
  5. Set the retention limit: the number of backup copies the plugin should keep for this destination.
  6. Choose whether OneDrive should be the default storage destination, if that option is shown.
  7. Save the settings, then run a manual backup so you can verify the connection immediately.

Use an account and folder that your site administrators can continue to access. If Microsoft’s authorization page or the plugin’s labels have changed, follow the current prompts shown by the installed version rather than relying on an old screenshot.

Select the backup scope and schedule

Choose full or partial scope

  • Full site: include website files and the database for general disaster recovery.
  • Files only: use when you specifically need themes, plugins, uploads, or other server files.
  • Database only: use for content and settings changes when a separate, current files copy already exists.

For routine protection, a full backup is the clearest baseline. Run a partial backup only when you understand which part of the site it protects and how the other part will be recovered.

Set a frequency that matches site activity

WPvivid documents both manual and scheduled backups. Select a frequency based on how often the site changes and how much recent work you could afford to recreate. A frequently updated store, membership site, or newsroom needs a different schedule from a rarely edited brochure site. The available sources do not establish one universal interval for every WordPress site.

Set retention without losing the recovery history you need

Retention controls how many copies remain in OneDrive. WPvivid’s guide states that, once the configured limit is reached, the oldest copies are deleted as newer backups are kept. Choose a limit that fits your OneDrive capacity while preserving enough history to recover from an unnoticed problem, not merely yesterday’s state.

Account for hosting limits and failed jobs

A backup can fail even after OneDrive authorization succeeds. WPvivid’s setup material identifies host file-size limits and PHP execution timeouts as factors that can interrupt large or long-running jobs.

  • If the plugin offers a split-size setting, use it to divide large backup archives into smaller parts suitable for the host’s limits.
  • Check the hosting plan’s resource and timeout settings rather than assuming a universal maximum file size.
  • Review the plugin’s logs or job details for the failed step, then rerun a smaller or more targeted backup if appropriate.
  • Do not treat a partial archive or an interrupted upload as a usable full backup.

Verify the backup in OneDrive

  1. Wait for the plugin to report the job as completed, not merely started or uploaded in part.
  2. Open the parent folder and website subfolder you configured in OneDrive.
  3. Confirm that the expected backup files are present and dated as expected.
  4. Check the plugin’s backup list for the same completed copy and its recorded scope.
  5. Record where the restore action is located in the WordPress dashboard.

Seeing files in OneDrive confirms that data was uploaded; it does not, by itself, prove that a complete site can be restored.

Understand the restore path before an emergency

WPvivid documents a dashboard-based restore workflow: open the plugin’s backup area in WordPress administration, locate the desired backup, and use its restore action. The exact button names and prerequisites depend on the installed version and the backup’s location.

Before an incident, identify the administrator account, OneDrive folder, and plugin screen needed to reach that copy. Also establish whether your host provides a staging site or another safe place to restore. The available documentation describes the feature, but it does not constitute a hands-on restore test; perform a controlled test when your hosting process allows it.

Common setup problems

OneDrive does not appear as an option

Check that the installed plugin edition includes OneDrive support and that the plugin is current. UpdraftPlus lists OneDrive as a paid-version feature, while WPvivid’s documented route is tied to the edition and interface shown in its current materials.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Authorization returns to WordPress without saving

Repeat the Microsoft sign-in and consent flow, then return to the cloud-storage screen and save the settings. Verify that the intended account and folder are selected.

The job times out or stops during a large upload

Inspect the host timeout and file-size constraints, enable archive splitting if available, and consult the plugin log. A smaller test backup can help isolate whether the failure is scope or resource related.

Files exist in OneDrive but no usable restore is listed

Check the plugin’s backup index, the selected folder and subfolder, and whether the copy includes both files and the database. Do not delete older copies until a valid backup is visible in the plugin’s restore interface.
