You can back up a WordPress site to Amazon S3 with a backup plugin that supports S3, such as UpdraftPlus. Configure an S3 bucket as the storage destination, include both the database and the site files you need, and set a schedule and retention policy. A backup is only useful if you can restore it, so document the recovery steps and periodically verify that the files and database can be recovered.
What a WordPress-to-S3 backup should include
A WordPress site has two distinct kinds of data to protect: the database and the files. The database holds posts, pages, settings, and other site content; files include themes, plugins, and uploads. Confirm that your chosen backup configuration includes both, rather than assuming a copy of one is a complete site backup.

1. Prepare the S3 bucket and access
Create an S3 bucket in the AWS region you intend to use, then follow the current UpdraftPlus S3 setup guide to connect the plugin. The guide describes using a dedicated AWS user with access to the bucket. Keep access credentials private, and grant no broader permissions than the current setup instructions require. Do not place secret keys in public documentation, support requests, or source code.

2. Choose the backup components
In the plugin’s backup settings, select the database and the file categories needed to reconstruct the site. Review the available selections in the current plugin interface: labels and features may change. If your host has its own backup or restore process, check how it handles database and file recovery as well.
3. Set a schedule that fits the site’s activity
Choose how often to back up based on how frequently the site changes and how much recent work you could afford to lose. A frequently updated site may need more frequent database copies than a mostly static site. UpdraftPlus’s directory listing documents recurring schedules, with intervals ranging from every few hours to monthly or fortnightly, as well as manual backups. Set file and database schedules deliberately rather than assuming they are identical.

4. Decide how many recovery points to keep
Retention determines how far back you can recover, while stored copies and versions can consume storage. Keep enough recovery points to cover the period in which you might discover a problem, and review the policy as the site’s needs change. If you use AWS Backup to protect data in S3, AWS requires S3 Versioning for that feature and recommends lifecycle expiration to avoid unnecessary accumulation of versions.
Restoring a WordPress backup from S3
A restore requires the backup archives and a process for putting both the database and files back into service. Follow the current instructions for the plugin or hosting environment that created the backup; a plugin archive workflow is not necessarily interchangeable with a host-level restore. Before a recovery is urgent, make sure you know where the archives are, who can access the AWS credentials, and how the database and files are restored together.

AWS Backup offers a separate S3 recovery path: it can restore selected objects or the objects in a bucket to an existing or new bucket, with restored objects placed in S3 Standard. AWS notes that permissions and ACL compatibility can affect recovery; if the source backup used ACLs, ACLs must also be enabled on the destination bucket. See AWS’s S3 restore documentation for the restore-role permissions and destination requirements. This restores S3 objects; it does not by itself perform a WordPress database-and-files restore.

These approaches can be complementary, but they are not synonyms. A plugin-to-S3 setup writes WordPress backup archives into S3; AWS Backup for S3 protects objects in an S3 bucket and has its own versioning, permission, and restore requirements.

Special case: WordPress hosted on AWS
AWS’s WordPress reference architecture treats application code and configuration, uploads, and database content as separate recovery concerns. Its example discusses AMIs and Aurora backups for code/configuration and database content, and S3 or EFS backup for themes, plugins, and uploads. Those recommendations are specific to the AWS-hosted architecture described there; they are not prerequisites for every WordPress site using S3 as a plugin backup destination.
