To back up most supported Android phones, open Settings → Google services → All services → Backup, turn on Backup by Google One, choose the data to include, then tap Back up now. Check Backup details to confirm what is selected and whether it has finished. Photos and videos, WhatsApp chats, and some app data need separate attention.
Back up your Android phone to your Google Account
- Prepare the phone. Connect it to the internet and unlock it. Google recommends protecting the phone with a PIN, pattern, or password screen lock.
- Open the backup settings. Go to Settings → Google services → All services → Backup. If those labels differ, search Settings for “Backup”; paths vary by Android version and manufacturer.
- Choose an account and categories. Select the Google Account to use if prompted, turn on Backup by Google One, and review the device data and any Photos & videos option shown.
- Start and verify a backup. Tap Back up now for an immediate backup. Google says completion can take up to 24 hours. Open Backup details to check the selected categories; Google says saved categories show “On.”

What an Android backup includes—and what it may miss
Google lists apps and app data, call history, contacts, device settings, and SMS and MMS messages among the items included in device backup. Some features depend on the app handling them: RCS messages require Google Messages, and phone settings and blocked numbers require Phone by Google. Google cautions: “Not all apps can back up or restore all settings and data.” Check critical apps individually rather than assuming their contents will return.

Photos and videos use Google Photos. Downloads such as PDFs, hidden-folder media, apps installed outside Google Play, data from apps that do not use Android backup, non-Google account data, and some device settings may not copy during Google’s phone-to-phone setup transfer. Those are exclusions for that transfer process, not a complete inventory of everything a cloud backup does or does not save.

Back up photos and videos separately
Set up backup in Google Photos and confirm it is using the right Google Account and includes the folders you care about. Do not rely only on the device-backup switch: Google identifies Google Photos as the route for backing up pictures and videos.
Protect WhatsApp chats
If WhatsApp conversations matter, enable WhatsApp backups on the old phone before switching. Google’s transfer guidance says chats and data restore from the cloud after you sign in to the new Android phone and open WhatsApp.

Check contacts saved on the phone or SIM
Contacts saved to a Google Account sync with that account. Contacts stored locally on the phone or SIM can be handled through Google’s separate Restore contacts flow. Restoring skips duplicates and syncs recovered contacts to the current Google Account and its devices.

If both phones are available, Android setup can copy data directly from the old phone by cable or wirelessly. This migration is separate from turning on Google Account backup: a direct copy is useful when moving devices, while a cloud backup gives you a saved copy associated with your account.

Google says setup transfer may take from minutes to hours, depending on the transfer. Check available storage and have both phones charged. If choosing a cable, use a USB data-transfer cable compatible with both Android phones; a cable is not required for Google Account backup. Restore a backup on a new or reset Android phone
- During first-time setup on the new phone, sign in with the Google Account that holds the backup and choose the available restore option.
- Follow the on-screen prompts to select the backup and data to restore. Google says restoration can take up to 24 hours.
- After setup, check Google Photos and WhatsApp separately, and confirm that important apps and data are present.
You can also restore after a factory reset. A backup made on a newer Android version cannot be restored to a phone running an older version. Update the destination phone or use a compatible device before relying on the restore.

Storage and backup security
Google’s Android Help page states that a Google Account includes 15 GB of storage at no charge; the page’s publication year is not stated. Google says additional storage is available through Google One. The 15 GB is account storage, so check available space if a backup does not complete.
Google says backup data is encrypted in transit, and some data is additionally encrypted using the device’s screen-lock PIN, pattern, or password. Google specifically excludes photos and videos in Google Photos and carrier MMS media from that additional screen-lock encryption. This does not mean every backed-up item has the same encryption protection.

If backup or restore is not working
- Settings look different: Search the Settings app for “Backup”; menu names and locations vary across devices.
- Backup is not complete: Connect to the internet, revisit Backup details, and check the category status instead of assuming that tapping the button finished the job. Google allows up to 24 hours for completion.
- Some data is missing: Check whether the app supports Android backup, whether photos are backed up in Google Photos, and whether WhatsApp backup was enabled on the old phone.
- Contacts are missing: Check whether they were saved to the Google Account or stored on the phone or SIM, then use the matching sync or Restore contacts route.
- Restore is rejected: Check Android version compatibility. A backup from a higher Android version will not restore to a lower-version phone.
