For one trip, open Directions, choose Driving, open Route options (or the three-dot More menu), switch on Avoid tolls, select the route without a toll indicator, and tap Start. Google Maps treats this as a preference to avoid tolls where possible, not an absolute guarantee, so inspect the route before leaving and after any reroute.
Avoid tolls for a single trip
The feature is available in Google Maps driving directions on both platforms. Labels and button positions can vary with the app version, screen size, language and region; the following paths reflect the current mobile interface checked on August 18, 2026.
Android
- Open Google Maps and search for your destination.
- Tap Directions, then tap the car icon for Driving.
- Tap the three-dot More button, or tap Route options if that control is shown directly.
- Turn on Avoid tolls.
- Review the route choices and tap the route that does not show a toll indicator.
- Tap Start only after checking the selected route.
iPhone
- Open Google Maps and enter the destination.
- Tap Directions and select Driving.
- Open the three-dot menu or Route options.
- Switch on Avoid tolls.
- If more than one route appears, tap the toll-free route on the map.
- Tap Start.
Google documents this route-customization workflow in its Maps Help and mobile road-trip guidance. The function is substantially the same on Android and iPhone, even when the labels are arranged differently.

To make toll avoidance a general preference, open Google Maps and typically follow this path:

- Tap your profile picture or initial in the upper-right corner.
- Open Settings.
- Choose Navigation or Navigation settings.
- Find Route options.
- Turn on Avoid tolls.
Google periodically reorganizes settings, so the exact wording may differ in a current Android or iOS release. This preference applies to future route calculations, but you should still verify each trip because closures, restrictions and map-data changes can alter the result.
How to confirm the selected route is toll-free
- Look for a toll icon or toll-related label on each route card. Google says toll and ferry icons can appear on routes that include those features.
- Compare travel time, distance and any displayed toll information; the fastest route is not necessarily toll-free.
- Tap Steps or inspect the route overview for named turnpikes, toll roads, bridges, tunnels or express lanes.
- Tap gray alternative routes directly on the map before starting navigation.
- Zoom in around bridges, tunnels, urban centers and managed lanes, where a short paid segment can be easy to miss.
Google explains route alternatives and toll indicators in its road-trip guidance. A displayed toll route may simply be an alternative for comparison; it is not necessarily the route Maps will navigate.

What to do if Google Maps still shows or selects a toll road
First distinguish between a toll route being displayed and the route you actually selected. If the chosen route has a toll symbol:

- Toggle it off and on, then recalculate the route.
- Select the alternative without the toll indicator.
- Open the route details and inspect bridges, tunnels, express lanes and other short segments.
- If Google recalculates after a missed turn, closure or traffic change, stop when safe and review the new route before continuing.
- If necessary, add a waypoint on a known toll-free road and calculate again.
Maps may still show or use a toll facility when no practical legal toll-free route exists. Its avoidance controls are instructions to try to avoid a feature, not a physical or legal guarantee, as described in Google’s route-avoidance documentation. Road signs and local traffic rules take precedence over the app.

Avoid tolls versus avoid highways
Avoid tolls and Avoid highways are separate route options. A highway can be free, and a toll road can be a bridge, tunnel or local express facility. Turning on both may force a much longer route and can send you onto roads unsuitable for a large vehicle or trailer. Use Avoid highways only when you also want to stay off freeways, not as a substitute for toll avoidance.
Specific toll roads, ferries and congestion charges
One named toll road
Google Maps does not normally offer a permanent consumer setting to block one specific toll road while allowing every other toll facility. You can select a visibly different route, add a waypoint on a known toll-free road, or combine Avoid tolls with another route option. Maps can still recalculate around traffic, closures or access restrictions, so none of these is an absolute road ban.

Ferries and highways
Ferries generally have a separate Avoid ferries option. Do not assume that avoiding tolls excludes every ferry or paid crossing. Google treats tolls, ferries and highways as distinct categories in its route-planning tips.
Express lanes and congestion pricing
Managed or express lanes may charge only at certain times or according to occupancy. Congestion-pricing zones, private roads and special-access facilities may be classified differently from conventional toll roads. Confirm the route against signs and local authority information, particularly where prices change dynamically.

Does avoiding tolls always save money?
A toll-free route removes the toll charge but may add fuel, mileage, travel time, vehicle wear and exposure to congested local roads. A toll road can sometimes be the cheaper overall choice when it avoids a long detour or severe traffic. Consider the toll amount, your vehicle’s fuel economy, the value of your time, safety and any vehicle-class restrictions before deciding.
How reliable are Google’s toll estimates?
Where supported, Google may show an estimated toll price. Treat it as planning information rather than a bill. The amount can vary with cash versus electronic-transponder payment, vehicle class, peak or off-peak pricing, high-occupancy eligibility, discounts, exemptions and recently changed schedules. Coverage is not universal; Google’s announcements describe availability only on supported roads and in supported countries (see its toll-price announcement).
Using Google Assistant on Android
While navigation is running, an Android user can say “Hey Google, avoid tolls.” To reverse the preference, say “Hey Google, allow tolls.” Google documents these commands in its navigation voice-control help. Availability depends on Assistant setup, language, account, device and driving context. Use hands-free controls only when lawful and safe; never handle the phone while moving.

Set the preference in the Google Maps phone app before connecting to CarPlay or Android Auto. Once the route appears on the vehicle display, verify its toll indicators. If route options are not visible on the vehicle screen, adjust them on the phone while parked. Interface and navigation availability vary by country, language, vehicle system and app version.
Offline maps and incomplete map data may not reflect current toll rules, closures or access restrictions. Even with the preference enabled, check signs during the drive and recheck the route after any automatic recalculation.
