Automatic translation can keep new posts, pages, and products in sync, but the exact behavior, billing, content coverage, and hosting model depend on the tool you select.
What “translating WordPress” actually means
Changing the language in Settings changes WordPress administration and software strings; it does not translate your site’s public pages, menus, forms, products, or metadata. WordPress’s Developer Handbook describes localization as adapting software text and settings for another language and culture. A multilingual plugin or translation service is needed for visitor-facing content.

What you need to decide first
- Target languages: Start with the languages your audience can support editorially.
- URL structure: Select language subdirectories, subdomains, or another structure supported by the chosen product.
- Translation method: Decide whether machine translation, human editing, or a combination is appropriate.
- Publishing policy: Choose whether translations wait for review or can be published automatically. Review is the safer default.
- Content scope: Include posts, pages, navigation, forms, theme and plugin strings, products, checkout, and SEO metadata in your inventory.
How to set up automatic translation
1. Inventory every area visitors use
List pages, posts, navigation labels, forms, theme and plugin text, products, account and checkout screens, pop-ups, and dynamic content. A language setting alone will not translate these elements.
2. Choose one multilingual solution
Do not run multiple plugins that each control language versions unless their documentation explicitly supports that arrangement. Back up the site and test changes on staging.

3. Configure languages and URLs
WPML’s setup wizard guides you through languages, URL format, AI engine, and translation mode, with an optional language switcher. Weglot connects a WordPress plugin to an account and lets you select languages. Weglot documents language subdirectories and subdomains, plus translated metadata and hreflang tags.
4. Enable the automatic workflow
In WPML, the documented path is WPML > Translations > Dashboard, where you can use the Translate Everything workflow after checking the selected engine, scope, and displayed cost. WPML documents automatic translation of new posts, pages, and products as they are published; newly enabling this mode requires its PTC engine. The exact controls can change, so confirm the current WPML documentation in your installation.
Weglot describes a hosted workflow in which machine translations are presented for review before publication. Review translations in context, then publish the approved versions.
5. Check functional and visible content
- Open translated navigation and verify links.
- Submit every important form and inspect validation messages.
- Check product descriptions, variations, cart, checkout, and account screens.
- Inspect page titles, descriptions, structured content, and social metadata.
- Test mobile layouts, right-to-left languages where relevant, and dynamic strings on a staging copy.
6. Define the update routine
Confirm whether edited source content triggers a new translation, whether automatic sends incur additional charges, and whether your manual corrections remain intact. WPML distinguishes automatic and manual sends for billing purposes; its current terms and pricing should be checked before launch.

| Option | Documented capabilities | Questions to verify before choosing |
|---|---|---|
| WPML | Setup wizard for languages, URL format, AI engine, and translation mode; automatic translation for new posts, pages, and products; Translate Everything Automatically requires the PTC engine for new activations. | Engine and language support, per-page versus per-word billing, content-type coverage, review controls, extension compatibility, and current costs. |
| Weglot | Account-connected plugin; automatic translation with review before publication; language URLs, hreflang, and translated metadata. Translations are hosted on Weglot’s servers. | Subscription limits, language and word allowances, export and migration process, URL structure, review controls, and the consequences of ending the service. |
| Polylang | WordPress.org listing documents a setup wizard and language-switcher blocks. The reviewed listing does not establish that the free plugin itself automatically translates content. | Whether a separate machine-translation integration is required, supported add-ons, compatibility, and manual editorial workload. The listing states WordPress 6.5 or later and PHP 7.4 or later; verify current requirements. |
| TranslatePress | WordPress.org identifies it as a visual translation plugin, while its automatic-translation category page describes AI translation. | Translation engine and allowance, language limits, URL and SEO features, and the current division between free and paid features. |
There is no evidence here of an independent head-to-head test of translation quality, speed, rankings, or total cost. Choose according to your priorities: minimal setup, visual editing, ecommerce coverage, granular control, predictable billing, or portability.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.SEO: will translated pages be indexed?
Language-specific URLs, hreflang tags, and translated metadata are technical features that can help search engines understand language variants. Weglot documents these capabilities, but the available documentation does not prove a ranking improvement or guarantee indexing. Use distinct, crawlable URLs, check canonical and hreflang output, and submit important language versions through your normal search-console workflow.
Important limitations and migration risks
Hosted-service dependence
Weglot states that translations are stored on its servers. If the service is discontinued or disconnected, the site will no longer be translated through Weglot; it describes an export option. Confirm what can be exported and how URLs and edited translations would be preserved before relying on a hosted workflow.
Compatibility
Directory listings are not a compatibility test for your theme or extensions. Test multilingual checkout, dynamic blocks, membership areas, search, caching, and forms on staging. Keep a backup before changing plugins or migrating language data.
Quality and high-risk content
No accuracy guarantee or independent accuracy study is established. For legal, medical, financial, safety, or regulated product content, have a qualified human review every translation before publication.
Quick Recap
Recommended operating checklist
- Back up the site and create a staging copy.
- Inventory all public and functional content.
- Install one multilingual solution and confirm its current requirements.
- Choose target languages and a stable URL structure.
- Configure the translation engine and automatic scope.
- Translate a representative set of pages first.
- Review wording, links, forms, metadata, and mobile rendering in each language.
- Publish approved translations and monitor new or edited content.
- Recheck usage limits, billing, compatibility, and export options as the site grows.
Which approach fits your site?
- Small brochure site: A visual editor such as TranslatePress may suit teams that want to correct machine output directly on the page.
- Frequent publishing: WPML’s documented automatic mode for new posts, pages, and products can reduce repetitive sending, provided the engine and billing model fit.
- Fast hosted setup: Weglot offers an account-connected workflow and review-before-publication process, but creates dependence on its hosting and subscription terms.
- Manual-first publishing: Polylang can be considered when editorial control matters more than built-in machine translation; verify whether an additional integration is needed.
