Choose Jetpack Social if you want WordPress to share a post automatically when it is published or scheduled. Choose WordPress to Buffer if every new post should enter Buffer’s separate queue and go out according to a later schedule. These are different triggers: publishing automation is not the same as queue-based scheduling.

Auto-sharing versus scheduling for later

With Jetpack Social, automatic sharing occurs when a post is published or reaches its scheduled publication time. Saving a draft does not share it. Jetpack also lets you reshare an already-published post at a future date and time.

With WordPress to Buffer, publishing sends the post to Buffer’s queue. Buffer then publishes it according to the schedule configured in your Buffer account. The post may therefore appear on social media later than its WordPress publication.

Set up automatic sharing with Jetpack Social

  1. Install Jetpack Social. Install and activate the standalone plugin or use Jetpack with Social enabled.
  2. Connect accounts. In Jetpack Social, authorize each social account you intend to use. The current connection guide explicitly excludes Twitter/X. LinkedIn authorizations expire every two months and must be renewed for automatic sharing to continue. See Jetpack’s network connection guide.
  3. Open the post editor. Create or edit a post and open the Jetpack/Social panel.
  4. Select networks. Choose the connected accounts that should receive this post and enable Auto-share post.
  5. Check the message and image. Jetpack uses the post’s featured image by default and provides a preview. Paid plans allow different text and media for each network.
  6. Publish or schedule. Click Publish to share immediately, or schedule the WordPress post. Automatic sharing runs when the scheduled post publishes; saving a draft does not trigger it.
  7. Confirm delivery. Review Jetpack Social’s sharing history or activity after publication. The complete workflow is documented in Jetpack’s Social sharing instructions.

Jetpack lists auto-sharing, previews, reshares of older content and scheduling reshares on its Free plan. Paid plans add custom media and per-network customization; check the current Jetpack Social plan comparison for present limits.

Reshare an existing WordPress post later

A reshare is separate from the first publication. Use Jetpack Social’s reshare workflow to choose an already-published post, set a future date and time, select networks, and review the proposed message and image before confirming. This is useful for evergreen content, but it does not revise the original social entry.

Send new posts to a Buffer queue

  1. Prepare the accounts. You need a WordPress site and a Buffer account.
  2. Install WordPress to Buffer. Install and activate the WordPress to Buffer plugin.
  3. Connect Buffer. Open the plugin’s settings in WordPress and authorize your Buffer account and selected profiles.
  4. Configure the template and image option. Set the text pattern for new posts and enable featured-image attachment if desired. Pro provides per-network templates and exact date/time scheduling controls.
  5. Publish a test post. When a new post is published, the integration sends it to Buffer’s queue rather than directly posting it at that instant.
  6. Check Buffer. Confirm the entry, destination profiles and planned time in Buffer before relying on the automation for production posts.

Buffer’s integration overview explains the connection flow at Buffer’s WordPress integration page. The plugin listing says its free version has limits on scheduled-post volume and connected profiles; review current Buffer plan terms before choosing it.

Network and account limitations to check

  • Twitter/X: Jetpack’s current connection documentation says it is unsupported. WordPress to Buffer’s plugin listing documents X support.
  • LinkedIn: Jetpack connections require reauthorization every two months.
  • Instagram: Jetpack lists Instagram Business connections. WordPress to Buffer’s listing says Instagram support is a Pro feature.
  • Pinterest: The WordPress to Buffer listing says Pinterest support is available with Pro.
  • WordPress.com sites: WordPress.com’s support guide, last reviewed September 17, 2026, says plugin-enabled sites can toggle auto-sharing, while other WordPress.com sites may have it always on. Static pages and custom post types do not auto-share by default. See WordPress.com’s auto-sharing support page.
  • Custom post types: Jetpack’s default reshare support covers standard posts and pages. Custom post types need additional support or configuration.

What happens when you edit a post?

A social share is a snapshot, not a live mirror. Later edits to the WordPress post do not automatically update entries that Jetpack already shared. If the headline, image or link needs correcting, edit the WordPress post and create a new social share or reshare as appropriate.

Preview before turning automation on for every post

Start with one test post and inspect the resulting caption, link, featured image, destination profile and timing. Jetpack’s preview helps identify formatting problems before publication. In Buffer, verify that the item entered the intended queue and that the selected profile is active. If the image is missing, check that the post has a featured image and that the relevant image-attachment option is enabled.

Troubleshoot missed or mistimed shares

  • No share occurred: Confirm the post was published, not merely saved as a draft, and that Auto-share post was enabled for that post.
  • A scheduled post did not share: Check that the WordPress publication completed and that the social account authorization is still valid, especially LinkedIn.
  • The network is unavailable: Compare the network with the product’s current supported list. Jetpack does not support X; Buffer availability varies by profile type and plan.
  • The post appeared later than expected: Buffer queue timing is intentional; inspect the queue schedule rather than expecting publication-time posting.
  • The social copy is wrong: Review the editor’s message before publishing, or adjust Buffer’s template. Per-network controls may require a paid plan.
  • Old content is unchanged: A later WordPress edit does not rewrite an existing social post. Publish a corrected share instead.

Which workflow should you choose?

Use Jetpack Social when the key requirement is “share this post as soon as WordPress publishes it,” when editors want to choose accounts inside the post editor, or when occasional reshares are important. Use WordPress to Buffer when you deliberately want a queue that spaces posts out, applies recurring schedules, or centralizes multiple social profiles in Buffer. Make the decision after checking the exact networks, profile types, plan limits and customization controls you need.
