Use Dropbox’s Camera uploads feature to send new iPhone photos and videos to Dropbox automatically. In the Dropbox app, go to Account → Camera uploads → Upload from → Settings, grant Photos access, choose your upload options, and tap Turn on camera uploads. The first upload may take a long time: iOS can delay background work, and a large library works most reliably over Wi‑Fi, while charging, with Dropbox open.
What automatic import does—and does not do
Camera uploads creates cloud copies of media in your iPhone Photos library. It is different from selecting individual files with Dropbox’s manual upload command, and it is not an iCloud Photos-style, continuous mirror of the Apple Photos library. iCloud Photos synchronizes Apple’s library; Dropbox places uploaded files in a Dropbox folder. Dropbox folder sync applies to Dropbox files and folders, not directly to the iPhone Photos library.
Deleting an iPhone original should not be treated as a test of the backup workflow. First verify that the Dropbox copy is present, opens correctly, and is in the intended account.

- Easily store and access 2TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
Before you turn it on
- A Dropbox account with enough free space for the items you intend to upload.
- The current Dropbox iOS app, signed in to the account you actually want to use.
- Photos or videos in the iPhone Photos library.
- Permission for Dropbox to access those items.
- Reliable Wi‑Fi and a charger, especially for an existing camera roll.
Dropbox Basic starts with 2 GB. Dropbox’s support documentation lists 2 TB for Plus and 3 TB for Professional individual plans; see Dropbox’s plan details and storage guidance for current availability. A video-heavy camera roll can exceed 2 GB quickly, so check your remaining quota before starting.
Turn on automatic iPhone uploads
- Open the Dropbox app and sign in.
- Tap Account.
- Tap Camera uploads.
- Tap Upload from, then open Settings when Dropbox asks for photo access.
- Grant the required Photos permission. Choose full access if you want the whole camera roll; limited access uploads only the items you selected.
- Choose whether to include photos, videos, cellular data, and any format options shown by your app version.
- Tap Turn on camera uploads.
Dropbox may move labels or icons slightly between releases. If the wording differs, look for Camera uploads inside the app’s Account area.
Best settings for most people
| Setting | Recommended default | Change it when |
|---|---|---|
| Photos | On | Turn it off only if Dropbox is not meant to back up photos. |
| Videos | On if your quota and data plan allow it | Turn it off for a photo-only archive or a small Dropbox plan. |
| Cellular data | Off | Turn it on if prompt uploads away from Wi‑Fi matter and your plan has generous data. |
| HEIC/HEVC | Preserve originals | Choose JPG or compatible conversion for older devices and software. |
| Background App Refresh | On | Disable only if you accept delayed background uploads to reduce battery use. |
Dropbox supports HEIF/HEIC photos and HEVC-encoded MOV files. Its iOS format guidance explains that Camera uploads can save HEIC photos as JPG; conversion can remove some HEIF features, and changing the setting does not convert files already uploaded.

Upload an existing camera roll reliably
New photos usually require less work than the first backlog. For a large library:
- Connect to dependable Wi‑Fi.
- Plug the iPhone into power.
- Open Dropbox and start Camera uploads.
- Keep Dropbox open while the initial transfer is active, and avoid force-quitting it.
- If Dropbox offers overnight uploads, use that mode. Dropbox describes it as iOS-only: the app remains open, the screen dims, and uploading continues while the iPhone is on Wi‑Fi and connected to a charger.
Do not promise completion while the phone is locked or the app is closed. iOS can restrict background activity to conserve battery, so there is no dependable fixed completion time.
Where the files go and how to verify them
Automatic uploads normally appear in the root-level Camera Uploads folder. Dropbox does not currently let Camera uploads target an arbitrary folder directly. Let the upload finish there, then move files into folders such as Photos/2026/Phone if you need a different organization.

Verify the setup with a new test photo:
- Take a photo after enabling Camera uploads.
- Watch for an upload status in Dropbox.
- Open Camera Uploads and check the test item’s timestamp and file type.
- Confirm it appears on another signed-in device or at dropbox.com.
- Check Dropbox storage usage before allowing a large video backlog to continue.
Fix uploads that are missing or stalled
Check permissions and iOS switches
- Open iPhone Settings, find Dropbox, and confirm Photos access.
- Enable Background App Refresh if you want background transfers.
- Enable Cellular Data for Dropbox only if cellular uploads are intended.
- Turn off Low Power Mode and, where applicable, Low Data Mode while diagnosing delays.
- Reopen Dropbox, connect to Wi‑Fi and power, and take a new test photo.
Dropbox lists these background-upload checks in its troubleshooting article: uploads not working in the background.

If the Dropbox quota is full, uploads cannot complete. Delete unneeded Dropbox files, move older media to another archive, or upgrade storage. A paid plan will not fix denied Photos access, disabled background activity, or iOS power restrictions.
If you have personal and work Dropbox accounts linked, Dropbox says Camera uploads can be enabled for only one account at a time. Confirm that the selected account is the intended destination. On a managed team account, an administrator may have disabled Camera uploads; ask the administrator rather than repeatedly reinstalling the app.

If the upload stops when the iPhone locks
Use Wi‑Fi, a charger, Dropbox open, and overnight uploads for a large backlog. iOS may pause or delay work after the app is backgrounded, and force-quitting Dropbox prevents it from continuing until reopened.

Keeping HEIC photos and HEVC video preserves the iPhone’s original formats but can challenge older Windows, Android, or other software. JPG conversion improves compatibility for future uploads, at the cost of some HEIF features. Existing Dropbox files remain unchanged when you switch the setting.
Live Photos are not ordinary still JPEGs. Dropbox supports uploading and viewing them in its mobile app; converting one to a still image discards its motion component. Dropbox’s controls and format behavior are described in its Live Photos guide.

Dropbox versus iCloud Photos
| Service | What it is best at |
|---|---|
| Dropbox Camera uploads | Cross-platform file copies in a Dropbox folder, accessible from Dropbox clients and the web. |
| iCloud Photos | Apple-native synchronization of the Photos library across Apple devices. |
You can use both, but they create separate cloud copies and consume separate storage quotas. Choose Dropbox when folder-based, cross-platform access is the priority; choose iCloud Photos when the Apple Photos experience is the priority.
Privacy, storage, and deletion decisions
Camera uploads gives Dropbox access to the iPhone Photos items allowed by your permission choice. Review Photos access, cellular permission, Background App Refresh, and the signed-in Dropbox account. Videos, Live Photos, and high-resolution originals consume quota quickly. Keep local originals until you have verified the Dropbox copies and decided that Dropbox is an adequate part of your backup plan.
For uncommon archive workflows, Dropbox documents a 2 TB maximum file size, while browser uploads above 375 GB may be unreliable: upload limitations. Normal camera uploads are far smaller, but an account still must have enough available storage.
