The safest way to automatically delete eligible temporary files in Windows 11 is Storage Sense. Open Settings > System > Storage > Storage Sense, turn it on, allow temporary-file cleanup, choose a schedule, and select Clean now if you want to run it immediately.
Use Storage Sense for automatic cleanup
- Open Settings.
- Go to System > Storage > Storage Sense.
- Turn on Storage Sense or Automatic User content cleanup, depending on your Windows 11 version.
- Confirm that temporary-file cleanup is enabled.
- Choose when Storage Sense should run: During low free disk space, Every day, Every week, or Every month.
- Select Clean now to run it immediately.
Microsoft documents Storage Sense in its Storage Sense support guide. Labels can vary slightly between Windows 11 releases.
Which schedule should you choose?

For ordinary users, weekly cleanup is a good default. Microsoft also documents these policy values as 0 for low free space, 1 for daily, 7 for weekly, and 30 for monthly; those values are mainly relevant to device-management policies rather than normal Settings use.

Temporary files are not one single folder. They can include application working files, installer remnants, browser and application caches, thumbnail data, diagnostic logs, interrupted-operation leftovers, and some Windows upgrade-related files.

Storage Sense can manage:
- Eligible, unused user temporary files.
- Recycle Bin items older than the configured threshold.
- Downloads files older than a selected threshold, but only if you explicitly enable that option.
- Locally available cloud files, such as OneDrive files, by making them online-only according to your settings.
Downloads cleanup is not enabled simply because temporary-file cleanup is enabled. Treat it as a separate, potentially destructive setting. Likewise, making a OneDrive file online-only does not permanently delete it; it removes the local copy while keeping the file available in the cloud.

What Storage Sense does not do
- It does not delete every file in every Temp folder.
- It primarily manages the Windows system drive, normally
C:. - It does not remove files currently locked by an application or Windows.
- It does not automatically make Downloads disposable.
- It is not a registry cleaner, malware-removal tool, or universal application-cache cleaner.
- It may not remove files outside its supported cleanup categories.
To inspect another drive, open Settings > System > Storage > Advanced storage settings > Storage used on other drives. A full non-system drive may require separate investigation.
Check temporary files manually
To see Windows’ categories and estimated space usage, open Settings > System > Storage > Temporary files. This page can include update files, delivery optimization data, thumbnails, crash dumps, and other categories that are not simply the contents of %TEMP%.

The two common temporary-file locations are:
%TEMP%
C:WindowsTempFor a manual cleanup, close installers, browsers, games, video editors, and other active applications first. Delete the contents of the folder, not the folder itself. If Windows reports that an item is in use or access is denied, choose Skip. Do not force deletion of locked files.
Using Storage Sense is preferable for routine maintenance because it applies Windows’ own cleanup rules. Never manually delete the contents of C:WindowsWinSxS; Microsoft warns that doing so can damage Windows or prevent updates and startup. See Microsoft’s WinSxS cleanup guidance.
If Storage Sense is not enough
Try Cleanup recommendations
Open Settings > System > Storage > Cleanup recommendations and review the categories and estimated savings. This is useful when you want to see what is consuming space before deleting it, but it is primarily a review-and-confirm tool rather than a fully automatic schedule.

Use Disk Cleanup
- Search Windows for Disk Cleanup.
- Select the system drive, usually
C:. - Review the categories.
- Select Clean up system files for additional system categories.
- Review the expanded list again, then select OK and confirm.
Disk Cleanup is useful for occasional system-file cleanup and predefined cleanup profiles. Microsoft also documents its command and scheduling options in the cleanmgr reference.

Advanced option: schedule PowerShell cleanup
Use a custom script only when Storage Sense does not provide the control you need. The following example targets only the signed-in user’s Temp directory and leaves a seven-day retention window:

Remove-Item -Recurse -Force -ErrorAction SilentlyContinue$env:TEMP limits the scope to the current user. AddDays(-7) avoids immediately removing newly created temporary data. -Force includes hidden items, while -Recurse handles eligible subfolders. The error setting skips locked, protected, or unavailable items instead of stopping the entire operation.
To schedule it:
- Save it as
C:ScriptsClean-UserTemp.ps1. - Open Task Scheduler and select Create Basic Task.
- Name it, choose Daily or Weekly, and select a time when the PC is normally on.
- Choose Start a program.
- Enter
powershell.exeas the program. - Use this argument:
-NoProfile -ExecutionPolicy Bypass -File "C:ScriptsClean-UserTemp.ps1" - Finish the task and test it manually from Task Scheduler.
This is custom automation, not an official Storage Sense configuration. Do not broaden it casually to C:WindowsTemp, other users’ profiles, or system directories. Review the result after the first few runs and delete the scheduled task if an application begins malfunctioning. Microsoft documents Remove-Item usage in its PowerShell file-and-folder examples.

When the Temp folder keeps growing
Automatic cleanup cannot solve a program that continuously recreates files. Use this sequence:

- Restart Windows.
- Check whether the folder grows again immediately.
- Sort the folder by size and date.
- Look for filenames, timestamps, or patterns linked to a particular application.
- Update, repair, or reinstall the suspected application.
- Run Windows Security if the files or behavior look suspicious.
Microsoft notes that Microsoft Store .appx files can contribute to a rapidly filling Temp folder. In that situation, investigate Store-related troubleshooting rather than repeatedly deleting the symptom. See Microsoft’s drive-space troubleshooting guidance.
If storage remains full after cleanup, the space may be occupied by Windows Update data, restore points, hibernation, the page file, Windows.old, or another storage category. Do not delete Windows.old casually: removing it can eliminate the ability to roll back a recent Windows upgrade. Microsoft explains this in its Windows.old guidance.
Do you need a third-party cleaner?
Usually not. Storage Sense, Cleanup recommendations, and Disk Cleanup are sufficient for most Windows 11 users who want automatic temporary-file maintenance.

Choose a third-party utility only when you specifically need broader application coverage or scheduling that Storage Sense cannot provide. You do not need to buy one merely to automatically delete ordinary Windows temporary files.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Storage Sense delete files in Downloads?
Not by default. Downloads cleanup is a separate option that must be enabled and configured.
Does Storage Sense delete OneDrive files?
It can make locally available cloud files online-only, but that is not the same as permanently deleting them.
Why are some Temp files still present?
They may be locked, outside Storage Sense’s supported categories, on another drive, or continuously recreated by an application.
Does deleting temporary files speed up Windows?
It reliably recovers storage and can reduce low-space problems, but a general performance improvement is not guaranteed.
Can I delete everything in %TEMP%?
Close active applications, delete only the contents, and skip files that are locked or inaccessible.
