For one delayed screenshot, use Snipping Tool’s Delay option. To take screenshots repeatedly, save a PowerShell capture script and run it with Task Scheduler while you are signed in to Windows. Xbox Game Bar is a separate, manual shortcut for a game or app. These are different jobs: a countdown helps you prepare one capture; it does not create a repeating schedule.
Choose the right method
| Method | How it starts | What it is for | Where the image goes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Snipping Tool Delay | You choose a delay, a snipping mode, then select New | One capture after a short countdown, such as a menu that disappears when you click elsewhere | Snipping Tool and the Screenshots folder; verify the save setting and destination on your PC |
| PowerShell script plus Task Scheduler | A scheduled task runs the script at a chosen interval | Repeated captures of the visible desktop while an interactive session is available | The folder and filename pattern specified in the script |
| Xbox Game Bar | Press Windows+Alt+Print Screen | A user-triggered screenshot of a game or app | A PNG under VideosCaptures |
Microsoft documents the Snipping Tool and Game Bar behaviors, and documents Task Scheduler and PowerShell scheduled jobs as scheduling mechanisms. The scheduling documentation is not a ready-made Windows 11 screenshot script; the example below is an implementation you can save and test on your own PC.
Take one screenshot after a delay with Snipping Tool
Use this when you need a single still image and want time to open a menu, tooltip, or other transient screen element before the capture.
- Open Snipping Tool from Start.
- Choose Delay and select a countdown from 1 to 5 seconds.
- Choose a mode: freeform, rectangular, window, or full screen.
- Select New to start the countdown, then arrange the screen before it ends.
- Check the resulting capture in the Snipping Tool window. Confirm the save behavior and destination in Settings; they can depend on the installed app version and settings.
The capture is copied to the Snipping Tool window. Microsoft’s current guidance also describes automatic saving to the Screenshots folder, but check your own app’s settings rather than assuming that every installation saves in the same way. Delay is a one-shot convenience, not a way to capture every minute or hour.

Schedule recurring desktop screenshots with PowerShell
For a repeating capture, the basic arrangement is a script that saves an image and a scheduled task that launches it. The sample below captures the primary monitor, writes a timestamped PNG to a folder you choose, and creates that folder if needed. It does not take a screenshot of a website in a browser automation session; it captures what is visible on the Windows desktop when it runs.
1. Save the capture script
Create a folder such as C:Screenshots. Open Notepad, paste the following script, and save it as C:ScreenshotsCapture-Desktop.ps1. In Notepad’s Save dialog, choose All files for the file type so it does not become Capture-Desktop.ps1.txt.

Add-Type -AssemblyName System.Drawing
$outputDirectory = 'C:Screenshots'
New-Item -ItemType Directory -Path $outputDirectory -Force | Out-Null
$bounds = [System.Windows.Forms.Screen]::PrimaryScreen.Bounds
$bitmap = New-Object System.Drawing.Bitmap($bounds.Width, $bounds.Height)
$graphics = [System.Drawing.Graphics]::FromImage($bitmap)
try {
$graphics.CopyFromScreen($bounds.Left, $bounds.Top, 0, 0, $bounds.Size)
$timestamp = Get-Date -Format 'yyyy-MM-dd_HH-mm-ss'
$filePath = Join-Path $outputDirectory "screenshot_$timestamp.png"
$bitmap.Save($filePath, [System.Drawing.Imaging.ImageFormat]::Png)
Write-Output "Saved screenshot: $filePath"
}
finally {
$graphics.Dispose()
$bitmap.Dispose()
}
The filename includes the date and time so later captures do not overwrite a file with a fixed name. If your schedule can run more than once per second, choose a longer interval or add a more precise unique filename scheme. Change $outputDirectory if you want another destination. This example uses the primary display’s bounds; multi-monitor capture behavior is not established here, so verify what you need on your specific setup before relying on it.
2. Run the script manually first
- Open Start, search for Windows PowerShell, and open it.
- Run
& 'C:ScreenshotsCapture-Desktop.ps1'. - Check for the “Saved screenshot” message and open the PNG in
C:Screenshotsto confirm it shows the intended screen.
Do this while signed in with the desktop visible. A task scheduler can successfully start a process yet still fail to produce the desktop image you expect if it runs without an interactive desktop. A Microsoft Q&A accepted answer on scheduled desktop screenshots advises configuring the task to run as the user while logged on; treat that as community guidance for interactive desktop capture, not a blanket compatibility guarantee for every Windows session or state.

3. Create a scheduled task
- Open Start, search for Task Scheduler, and open it.
- Create a task with a schedule trigger. Windows scheduling supports minute, hourly, daily, weekly, and monthly frequencies. Choose the frequency that fits the job; avoid a very short interval unless you have a specific reason, because it creates more files and uses more storage.
- Set the action to start a program. Use
powershell.exeas the program and provide-NoProfile -ExecutionPolicy Bypass -File "C:ScreenshotsCapture-Desktop.ps1"as the arguments. - Configure it to run as your Windows user only when that user is logged on for a task intended to capture the visible desktop. Do not assume a task running as SYSTEM or in a noninteractive session can see your screen.
- Save the task, then run it once from Task Scheduler while signed in. Check the destination folder for a newly timestamped PNG before relying on the recurring trigger.
Task Scheduler’s exact dialog layout can vary, but the essential pieces are a recurring trigger, an action that launches PowerShell with the script path, and a logged-on interactive session for desktop capture. PowerShell scheduled jobs are another documented Windows PowerShell 5.1 scheduling route, with one-time and recurring triggers managed through Task Scheduler; they still need an appropriate interactive context for this visible-desktop use case.
Choose the interval and storage deliberately
A screenshot every minute creates 1,440 files in a 24-hour period if the task runs continuously. That is arithmetic, not a Windows limit; file size depends on screen dimensions and image content. Start with a longer interval, check the resulting file sizes and usefulness, then adjust. Decide how long to retain images and delete or archive old captures if the folder grows. Screenshots may expose messages, account details, or other private information, so choose a folder with appropriate access and avoid capturing screens you do not have permission to record.

Capture a game or app with Xbox Game Bar
For a quick, manual screenshot of a game or app, press Windows+Alt+Print Screen. Microsoft documents the resulting image as a PNG saved under VideosCaptures. This is a keyboard-triggered still capture, not a repeating unattended schedule. If your purpose is recording a sequence of activity, that is a different task from saving periodic still screenshots.
Troubleshoot missing or incorrect screenshots
- The scheduled task runs but no image appears: Run the script manually in PowerShell while signed in. Check the script path, output folder, and task action arguments. For capturing the visible desktop, configure the task for the user while logged on; a noninteractive SYSTEM task may have no desktop to capture, according to the cited Microsoft Q&A guidance.
- The task says it cannot find the script: Verify that the file is really named
Capture-Desktop.ps1, notCapture-Desktop.ps1.txt, and that the action’s path matches where you saved it. Use quotes around paths containing spaces. - The script reports an error saving the file: Confirm that the account running the task can write to the output directory. Try the script interactively first to reveal PowerShell errors rather than diagnosing only from the scheduled run.
- Captures replace each other: This sample uses a timestamp to avoid ordinary same-day overwrites. If you changed it to a fixed filename or run multiple captures within one second, use a unique naming scheme or increase the interval.
- The image shows only one display: The supplied example intentionally uses the primary screen bounds. It does not establish behavior for all multi-monitor arrangements; test a capture approach that matches your monitor layout before using it as a record.
- Snipping Tool saves somewhere unexpected: Check the app’s Settings and the Screenshots folder. Saving behavior and destination can vary with the installed app version or settings.
- You expected a video or a step-by-step guide: A screenshot is a still image. Microsoft documents Steps Recorder separately for annotated task documentation and notes its deprecation; do not treat it as a recurring screenshot scheduler.

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API, not a Windows desktop or game capture tool. Use it when the thing you need is a web page at a URL, rather than the visible screen of your PC. One GET request returns an image or PDF; the example below saves a WebP screenshot of a web page. See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for parameters.
