Use a watermarking plugin to mark images as they are uploaded, then process older Media Library files in controlled batches. A reliable setup uses a text or logo mark, keeps clean originals backed up, tests every relevant image size, and only then enables bulk processing.
Can WordPress automatically watermark images on upload?
Yes. WordPress itself does not include a built-in watermark switch, but a plugin can apply a text or image watermark during Media Library upload. The same plugin can usually process images that are already stored in the library.
Image Watermark is one documented option. Its WordPress.org listing describes automatic processing for new uploads and an Apply Watermark bulk action for existing media. The listing showed version 2.0.15 and more than 40,000 active installations when accessed in 2026; those figures are listing metadata, not a guarantee of reliability or security. Check the live listing before installing because requirements and versions change.
What you need before installing
- An administrator account that can install plugins.
- A transparent PNG logo or concise text for the mark.
- A complete site backup and a verified way to restore image files.
- Hosting that meets the plugin’s current requirements. Image Watermark’s listing specified WordPress 6.3 or newer, PHP 7.3 or newer, and either GD or ImageMagick, with JPEG, PNG and WebP support at the time documented.
Image processing consumes server memory and disk space. Large libraries, high-resolution originals and simultaneous bulk jobs may require smaller batches or a higher hosting resource limit.

How to configure automatic watermarking for new uploads
- Install the plugin: In the WordPress dashboard, open Plugins → Add New, search for Image Watermark, choose the matching plugin, install it and select Activate. The official listing also describes manual ZIP installation.
- Open its settings: Go to Settings → Watermark.
- Choose the mark: Select a text watermark or upload an image watermark. For a logo, use a transparent PNG so the surrounding image remains visible.
- Set placement: Choose the corner or center position, then configure horizontal and vertical offsets. Leave enough margin that cropping or responsive layouts do not cut off the mark.
- Set size and opacity: Use the available size mode and opacity control. A mark should be readable without obscuring the subject; preview it against both light and dark areas.
- Limit the scope: Select the post types or upload contexts that should be watermarked. Enable minimum-dimension exclusions if icons, avatars or small thumbnails should remain clean.
- Keep original backups enabled: The plugin documents restoring an original from a validated clean backup. Confirm that the backup location is protected with appropriate server access controls.
- Save and preview: Use the plugin’s preview, then upload one representative image before changing the whole library.
How to test the result safely
Use a test image that resembles your real uploads: include a large photograph, a portrait or landscape crop, and a transparent or WebP file if your site uses them.
- Open the attachment in Media → Library and inspect the full-size file.
- View the image on the front end, including the page or product template where visitors see it.
- Check generated sizes such as thumbnails, medium images and responsive variants. A watermark may appear differently depending on which sizes the plugin processes.
- Confirm that the clean original backup exists and that its restore process is available.
- Test one image with dimensions below your exclusion threshold to verify that the rule works.
Do not start a library-wide operation until the test produces the intended mark and you know which stored files are changed.
How to watermark images already in the Media Library
- Back up the site and verify that the backup contains the original image files.
- Open Media → Library and switch to the list or grid view that exposes bulk actions.
- Select a small batch of images rather than the entire library.
- Choose Apply Watermark from the available bulk action and run it.
- Inspect the processed files on the Media Library and front end.
- Continue in small batches only after confirming the result and backup behavior.
Keep a record of which batches were processed. If a job times out or the server becomes unavailable, stop and inspect the affected files before retrying; rerunning blindly can create inconsistent results or apply a mark twice, depending on the plugin’s behavior.

Can you remove a watermark later?
Only reliably if an untouched original backup exists. Image Watermark describes removal as restoring a validated clean backup, not as reconstructing pixels from an already-marked file. Enable backups before processing and test that an original can be restored. A separate backup system or server snapshot may be needed if plugin backups are unavailable or incomplete.
What to check when watermarking does not run
Confirm the image engine
Open the plugin’s Status tab and check whether GD or ImageMagick is active and whether diagnostics report an error. The active engine and its server configuration determine whether the plugin can transform a particular format.
Check compatibility and resources
Compare the site’s WordPress and PHP versions with the plugin’s current listing. Confirm that the required PHP image extension is enabled, that the server has write permission for uploads and backup directories, and that sufficient memory and disk space are available.

The Image Watermark listing has documented fixes involving client-side upload finalization in newer WordPress releases and saving watermark settings. Its user reviews include both successful reports and reports of settings or operations failing. These are individual reports, not measurements of typical performance, so use the current changelog and support forum alongside your site’s diagnostics.

Choose by matching the workflow rather than by installation count: automatic uploads, bulk treatment, restoration, text-versus-logo controls, WooCommerce or front-end uploads, supported image engines and formats, template limits, and whether files are changed permanently or marked only at display time.

What watermarks cannot prevent
A watermark identifies the source and discourages casual reuse, but it cannot make an image impossible to copy. Image Watermark’s documentation states that right-click blocking, drag-and-drop blocking and developer-tool restrictions are browser-side deterrents, not absolute protection. Visitors can still photograph a screen, use another browser or obtain an image from caches and other copies.
Advanced option: custom WordPress integration
Developers can integrate processing around WordPress’s wp_generate_attachment_metadata filter, which receives generated attachment metadata and an attachment ID. The context can be create for initial metadata generation or update when metadata is regenerated. A plugin is safer for most site owners because it supplies settings, previews, backups and bulk controls; custom code requires its own image-engine checks, error handling and restoration plan.

Should I watermark the original file or generated thumbnails?
Follow the plugin’s documented scope and verify every size with a test image. Keep an untouched original backup so you can restore the source if the result is wrong.
Is a watermark enough to stop image theft?
No. It can identify ownership and deter casual reuse, but browser-side copy restrictions and watermarks cannot provide absolute protection.
