To automate screenshots with Python, write a script that opens a page in a headless browser, waits for the content you need, saves an image, and then schedule that script to run. Playwright provides the browser capture step; you can use APScheduler for recurring jobs inside a Python application or your operating system’s scheduler to launch the script at set times.
Build a Python screenshot script
The example below uses Playwright’s synchronous Python API. It captures the visible viewport and closes the browser after the image is saved. This is an illustrative starting point, not a tested script; install Playwright and its browser binary, then run the script manually before scheduling it.
- Install Playwright: In the Python environment you intend to use, install the Playwright package and install the browser binary required by your chosen Playwright browser. Follow the Playwright Python library guide for the current installation steps.
- Save the following as

Use an absolute path so the script does not depend on whichever working directory the scheduler happens to use. The script creates the output directory if it does not exist.
- Run it by hand: Start it with the Python interpreter you installed Playwright into. Confirm that the image appears at the expected location before you add a schedule.
Playwright’s documented workflow launches a browser, navigates to a URL, captures a screenshot, and closes the browser; headless mode is the default, so a visible browser window is not required. See the Playwright screenshot guide.
Choose what and when to capture
Capture the viewport, full page, or one element
The example saves the current viewport. Use full-page capture if content below the fold matters, or target an individual element if you only need a particular chart, card, or other component:

page.locator(".report-card").screenshot(path=str(OUTPUT))Playwright documents both full_page=True and element screenshots. The selector must match the element you want to capture. If the page renders content after navigation, wait for the relevant condition before taking the screenshot—for example, page.locator(".report-card").wait_for() when that element indicates readiness. A page’s load event alone may not mean that every delayed image or application component is ready.
Pick an output format and scale
Playwright supports PNG, JPEG, and WebP screenshots. PNG is a lossless option; JPEG and WebP can use quality settings where supported. The screenshot API also provides scale and animation options. Choose based on the detail you need and the file size you can store, rather than assuming one format is best for every page. Disabling animations can reduce movement during capture, but does not make changing page content identical between runs. Schedule the script to run repeatedly
There are two common approaches. Neither is universally better: choose based on where the process will run, whether it can remain alive, how you want missed runs handled, and whether you prefer Python configuration or host-level scheduling.

Use APScheduler in a running Python application
APScheduler’s user guide describes scheduling Python code for one-time or recurring execution. Add the capture function as a job in an application that stays running, and configure the recurrence there. The scheduler process must be available when the job is due; a script left in a terminal is not a reliable substitute for a managed, running application.

Use your operating system’s scheduler
Configure the host to start capture.py at the times you want. Exact setup and labels vary by operating system, so use that platform’s scheduler instructions. Point it to the intended Python interpreter and script, and account for the working directory, environment variables, permissions, and retry behavior. These settings can differ from an interactive terminal session.
Make scheduled captures easier to trust
- Avoid accidental overwrites: If you need a history, include a date and time in each output filename, or otherwise choose a naming scheme that preserves earlier captures.
- Record outcomes: Log each run, including failures such as network errors, navigation timeouts, or missing permissions. That makes it easier to distinguish a missed schedule from a page that did not load.
- Wait for meaningful readiness: Choose a page state or selector that reflects the content you need. A successful navigation does not guarantee that delayed images or dynamically rendered elements are ready.
- Account for changing pages: Timestamps, animations, rotating content, and personalization can change between captures. Screenshot settings can reduce some variation, but pixel-identical output is not guaranteed unless the page and its inputs are controlled.
- Check access: Capture only pages and data you are authorized to access. Browser automation does not bypass access rules.
