For a one-off screenshot, press Windows + Shift + S and choose a snip. For a repeatable desktop task, use Power Automate Desktop’s Take screenshot action and trigger the flow manually or with a keyboard shortcut. If you are building an app that asks users to capture an image, Windows also provides the ms-screenclip: protocol—but it opens Snipping Tool’s interactive interface rather than taking a silent background screenshot.
The right method depends on whether you need a quick capture, a scheduled or repeatable workflow, or an app integration. This guide covers Windows 10 and 11, based on Microsoft documentation checked September 29, 2026.
Choose the right way to capture

These approaches are not interchangeable. Snipping Tool and Power Automate capture what is displayed on the Windows desktop. A web screenshot service captures a page by URL, which is useful for browser-based pages but does not replace a desktop capture of a local app or the screen.

Capture a region, window, or screen
- Press Windows + Shift + S. Snipping Tool opens its capture overlay.
- Choose a mode: freeform, rectangle, window, or full screen.
- Make the selection or choose the window or screen to capture.
- Save the result from Snipping Tool when you need a file. Windows’ current documentation says captures are automatically saved in the Screenshots folder; Snipping Tool settings let you change automatic saving or the folder.
This is interactive, not unattended automation: a person chooses the capture mode and region. It is the simplest option when the thing to capture varies from one screenshot to the next.

Copy the full screen with Print Screen
Press Print Screen to copy a full-screen snapshot to the clipboard. Paste it into an image editor, document, or chat that accepts images. This is convenient when you want to paste a screen quickly, but it does not by itself create a named image file or automate a sequence.
Microsoft’s Snipping Tool guidance covers Windows 10 and Windows 11. Shortcut behavior and settings can depend on Windows configuration; if a key does not open the expected capture experience, use the Snipping Tool app or its documented shortcut instead of assuming a background capture occurred. Microsoft’s Snipping Tool instructions describe the current capture and save options.
Build a repeatable screenshot flow in Power Automate Desktop
Power Automate Desktop is the Windows route when taking a screenshot is one step in a repeatable task—for example, after opening an application or navigating it to a known state. Its Take screenshot action can capture all screens, the primary screen, a selected screen, or the foreground window. The action can send the image to a file or the clipboard. Microsoft documents BMP, EMF, EXIF, GIF, JPG, PNG, TIFF, and WMF as available formats. Exact labels or choices can change with product updates.

- Install Power Automate Desktop and sign in as the Windows user who will run the flow. Those are prerequisites for the documented desktop-flow keyboard shortcut trigger.
- Create a desktop flow and add the actions needed to bring the target application into the required state. For a reliable capture, identify the window and screen contents you expect before adding the screenshot action.
- Add the Take screenshot action. Select the scope: all screens, primary screen, a chosen screen, or foreground window.
- Choose an output destination. The action’s documented default is all screens and clipboard; choose a file destination if the flow must leave a saved artifact.
- Select the image format appropriate to the next step. PNG is a common choice for sharp interface text; use another listed format if the system consuming the image requires it.
- Run the flow against the real application state and inspect the saved image or clipboard output before relying on it.

Trigger the flow with a keyboard shortcut
Power Automate Desktop supports triggering a desktop flow with a configured keyboard shortcut. The shortcut is associated with the user and machine, so it is not a universal system hotkey that automatically follows the flow to another Windows account or PC.

- Configure the shortcut for the desktop flow using Power Automate’s keyboard-shortcut flow trigger.
- Make sure the signed-in user and machine match the setup where you configured it.
- Press the shortcut when the application is ready. The flow should perform its defined actions, including the screenshot step.

Focus is part of the workflow
A screenshot action captures the screen state it is given; it does not guarantee that the intended application is visible or ready. Power Automate’s UI automation documentation says UI actions require the target window to be foreground or bring it forward automatically. For sending shortcut keystrokes, Microsoft recommends using a Focus window action before Send keys.

Place window focus and any navigation or wait steps before the screenshot action. If a flow works only when you click the app first, it is likely relying on incidental focus rather than a stable sequence. Microsoft explains the relevant behavior in its documentation on UI automation and Send keys.
Launch Snipping Tool capture from an application
Developers can use the ms-screenclip: URI protocol to launch an image capture request through Snipping Tool. This is an integration with the interactive capture experience, not a command for silently taking a screenshot in the background.
Microsoft documents the protocol for apps that need to request a capture. The app must be packaged as MSIX to receive the captured image response through redirect-uri. An unpackaged Win32 caller can launch the capture experience but cannot receive that response through the documented redirect flow.

The screenshot shows the wrong app or desktop
Likely cause: The target window was not foreground, or the flow captured all screens when you expected a window or primary-screen capture.
Fix: Add a focus step for the intended window before sending keys or capturing. Recheck the screenshot action’s capture scope and run the flow while the app is in the state you expect.

The shortcut does nothing
Likely cause: The flow’s keyboard shortcut is not configured for the current user and machine, or Power Automate Desktop is not installed or signed in for that user.
Fix: Verify the trigger configuration in the account and on the PC where you are pressing the shortcut. Do not assume a shortcut configured under one user profile applies to another.
The image is on the clipboard, but no file exists
Likely cause: The screenshot action is using clipboard output. That is its documented default destination.

Fix: Set a file destination in the screenshot action if the flow needs a persistent image, then verify that the chosen path is writable and that the flow reaches the capture step.
An app launches capture but never receives the image
Likely cause: The caller is an unpackaged Win32 app expecting the documented redirect response.

The flow captures before the page or app is ready
Likely cause: The flow reaches the screenshot action before the interface reaches the desired state.
Fix: Add the necessary navigation, focus, or wait steps before capture, then test against the actual states in which the flow will run. Desktop UI automation depends on window focus and UI state; Microsoft’s documentation describes the interaction requirements but does not establish that an arbitrary flow will be reliable without testing it against its target app.
What to know about reliability and output
- Desktop captures depend on visible state. A foreground-window or screen capture reflects what is displayed when the action runs. A flow that does not establish focus and wait for the correct state can capture the wrong content.
- Destination changes what happens next. Clipboard output is useful for immediate pasting; file output is needed when later steps or another program must open the image.
- Choose the capture scope deliberately. All screens, primary screen, selected screen, and foreground window are different targets. A multi-monitor desktop may contain more than the window you intended to document.
- Plan around file format requirements. Power Automate documents several formats, but the downstream app must support the format the flow writes.
- Test the exact flow on its target app. Microsoft’s documentation describes the actions and focus model; it does not provide a performance benchmark or guarantee for a particular application workflow.
