Automate CMS preview screenshots by combining a draft-capable preview URL, a controlled browser worker, and an artifact record. A typical job resolves an entry to a safe preview route, authenticates draft mode on the server, opens that route in Playwright, waits for an application-specific ready signal, captures the viewport, full page, or a selected element, and stores the image with the entry revision and rendering metadata.
The public production URL usually shows published content, so it is the wrong target for draft review. Your frontend must be able to render unpublished data through the CMS’s preview mechanism.
Reference architecture for CMS preview screenshots
- Trigger: Start a job from an editor action, entry update event, review request, or CI workflow. Choose the event that matches your publishing process; there is no universal CMS trigger.
- Resolve the preview: Convert the entry ID and revision into an approved path on your own preview domain. Do not accept an arbitrary redirect URL.
- Authorize draft content: Perform the CMS-specific activation flow with server-side secrets. Give the browser worker only the access it needs.
- Render consistently: Pin the browser, viewport, fonts, fixtures, timezone and other inputs that can change pixels.
- Capture: Take a viewport, full-page, or element screenshot after a page-specific ready signal.
- Store and report: Save the image with entry ID, revision, environment, URL, capture time, viewport and a distinct job result such as authorization failure, missing entry, render failure, timeout, rate limit or storage failure.
- Compare optionally: Use a baseline only when the rendering environment and expected content changes are controlled.
Restrict artifact access and retention: screenshots can expose unpublished copy, prices, campaigns or product launches. Expire preview credentials and artifacts according to your draft-content policy.
Make the CMS preview route safe
Contentful
Contentful’s Preview API is read-only and returns the latest entry and asset versions for preview. Use its dedicated preview access token; a production delivery token does not work with this API. The Preview API does not implement the Sync API, so an application that relies only on Sync needs another source for preview data. The documented default Preview API limit is 14 requests per second; higher limits may depend on the plan. Batch workers must honor rate-limit responses and retry signals.

In Contentful, configure preview URLs for page-like content types and point them to your online or local website preview. Reusable fragments that do not represent a page generally should not receive a direct screenshot route. Never put an access token in a preview URL. Validate every field inserted into the route, including spaces, # and %, and reject values that could create an unintended path or redirect.
Sanity
Sanity draft mode normally uses an activation endpoint: validate a preview secret against the Sanity API, set a draft-mode cookie, and redirect to the requested page. Keep the draft-read token in server-side code; it must be able to read draft and version documents and must never be shipped to browser JavaScript.
The Presentation Tool adds configured preview URLs and allowed origins. Treat origin allowlists, redirect validation and the activation endpoint as one security boundary, particularly when several frontends are configured. Contentful and Sanity use different token and activation models; do not substitute one flow for the other.
Self-hosted Playwright worker
Playwright can capture the visible viewport, the entire scrollable document, or one element. It can also return image bytes for object storage or an image-processing pipeline. The example below assumes your application exposes a server-side preview activation route and a deterministic path such as /preview/article/ENTRY_ID?revision=REVISION.

}Replace the ready selector with a signal owned by your application, such as a known heading or data-preview-ready marker. Navigation completion alone does not prove that client-rendered content, images or draft data is ready. A network-idle wait can help in some applications, but it is not a universal guarantee.
Select the capture mode
- Viewport: Represents what an editor sees initially and keeps artifact dimensions predictable.
- Full page: Captures the complete scrollable document for long-form layout review.
- Element: Isolates a card, hero, table or other component. Locate it with a stable CSS selector and call
locator.screenshot(). - Bytes: Omit
pathand use the returned buffer when uploading directly to object storage.

Screenshot pixels can vary with host operating system, browser version, browser settings, hardware, power source and headless mode. Run capture and baseline generation in the same pinned environment. Standardize:
- Playwright and Chromium versions, preferably in a versioned container.
- Viewport, device scale factor, timezone, locale and color scheme.
- Fonts installed in the worker and image fixtures served by the preview.
- Animation, carousels, current-time labels and randomized data.
- Hover and focus state, scroll position and authentication state.
Mask or hide volatile regions and apply test-only styles where appropriate. For visual regression, Playwright Test’s screenshot assertion waits for two consecutive matching screenshots before comparing with the expected baseline; it is useful only when your data and rendering inputs are controlled.
Protect secrets and unpublished content
- Never place a CMS access token in a public preview URL.
- Keep Contentful preview tokens and Sanity draft-read tokens in server-side environment configuration.
- Validate preview secrets before setting cookies, and allow redirects only to approved internal paths.
- Restrict the worker to the approved preview domain and route; do not let a CMS field select an arbitrary host.
- Use origin allowlists for Sanity Presentation Tool integrations.
- Protect object-storage keys and limit who can view screenshot artifacts.
- Log identifiers and status, not raw tokens or sensitive draft payloads.
Batching, rate limits and failure handling
Queue jobs rather than starting an unbounded browser per entry. Limit concurrency to the capacity of your workers and the CMS API. For Contentful, the documented default Preview API limit is 14 requests per second; this is an API limit, not a screenshot-throughput promise. Use exponential backoff for rate-limit responses and preserve the entry ID and revision so a retry cannot overwrite a newer capture.

Give each job a deadline and classify failures. A missing entry should not be retried like a transient network timeout. Store a result such as success, authorization_failed, missing_entry, render_failed, screenshot_timeout, rate_limited or storage_failed. On retry, create a new attempt record and keep the original error.

Troubleshooting
The screenshot shows published content
The worker opened the production route or draft mode was not activated. Use the CMS preview endpoint, verify the server-side token, check the draft cookie, and assert a visible draft marker or revision value before capturing.
Activation returns unauthorized
The secret is missing, expired or being sent to browser code. Rotate it, validate it on the server, and ensure the worker receives only the approved activation request.
The page is blank or incomplete
Your wait condition is too weak, client data failed, or an image/font request is still pending. Add an application-owned ready marker, inspect console and network errors, and make fixtures deterministic.
Full-page output is unexpectedly tall
Lazy content, expanding accordions or infinite scroll may keep changing document height. Disable infinite loading for previews, wait for the final layout, and capture a named element when full-page review is unnecessary.

Batch jobs receive rate-limit responses
Lower concurrency, queue requests, honor retry headers and use exponential backoff. For Contentful, keep aggregate Preview API traffic within the documented default of 14 requests per second unless your plan provides another limit.
Visual diffs change between runs
Compare the worker’s browser and operating-system versions, fonts, timezone, device scale, animation state, data fixtures and headless mode. Run baselines and comparisons in the same controlled environment and mask expected volatility.
Artifacts expose confidential drafts
Restrict storage permissions, avoid public URLs, encrypt where required, set short retention and remove credentials from logs and filenames.

Should I capture the CMS editor screen or the rendered preview?
Capture the rendered preview route. The editor interface is not the page readers will review, and a production URL generally omits unpublished content.
Can I use a visual baseline for every draft?
Use baselines only when browser, operating system, fonts, fixtures and expected content changes are controlled; otherwise report the image for human review instead of treating every difference as a regression.
Is the Contentful 14-requests-per-second figure a screenshot limit?
No. It is the documented default Preview API rate limit and does not guarantee screenshot-worker throughput.
