The reliable pattern is a five-stage Make scenario: receive a prompt or content record, call an image-generation provider, retrieve the returned image, optionally transform it, and save or route the file with its metadata. Make can connect through a provider’s native app when the required generation action exists, or through its HTTP app when it does not. The provider still determines the endpoint, fields, authentication, output format, pricing, and rate limits.
What an automated image workflow in Make looks like
Make scenarios are chains of modules. A trigger starts an execution, each module maps values from earlier modules, and the final modules deliver the result. For image creation, keep the stages separate so you can inspect the provider response before attempting a download or upload.
- Trigger: receive a prompt from a webhook, form, content database, or another app.
- Generate: call an image provider through its Make app or an HTTP request.
- Retrieve: download the image when the provider returns a URL, or pass through a file object when it returns binary data.
- Process: optionally convert format, extract metadata, or resize with Make’s Image modules.
- Store and route: upload the file to your destination and save prompt, model, dimensions, URL, and status alongside it.
This architecture is a documented Make building-block pattern, not a guarantee that every provider exposes the same modules or response fields. Confirm the selected provider’s current API documentation before you build mappings.
Choose a native Make app or HTTP

Do not infer image generation from an integration that only analyzes images. Open the provider’s current Make listing and confirm that it offers a generation action. If it does not, use HTTP. Make’s HTTP app supports API-key, Basic Auth, and OAuth 2.0 connections; enter credentials in the dedicated Credentials field rather than hard-coding secrets into a header or query string.

Build the scenario step by step
1. Define the input and destination
Decide what starts one job and where its result belongs. A useful record contains a prompt, optional style or size fields, a stable content ID, and a destination path. Define accepted formats, maximum file size, naming rules, and required dimensions before you configure the upload module. Those constraints belong to the receiving app and must be checked in its own documentation.
2. Add a trigger
For an external producer, add a Webhooks > Custom webhook trigger and copy the generated URL into the sending service. Make states that, by default, when it receives webhook data, the scenario executes immediately. Run the webhook once with a representative payload so Make learns the fields you will map. Polling is an alternative when the source app cannot send webhooks.
3. Add generation
Search + Add another module for the selected provider. If a current generation action is available, create its connection and map the incoming prompt and other supported fields. Do not guess parameter names from another provider. If there is no native action, add HTTP > Make a request, select the appropriate method, enter the provider endpoint, choose JSON content, and map the prompt into the documented request body.
Use the HTTP connection’s credential settings for authentication. Make requires secure HTTPS and rejects unverified self-signed certificates. After the first run, inspect the actual response: determine whether it contains binary data, a direct image URL, an asynchronous job ID, or an error object. Turn on response parsing when you need JSON fields to become mappable tokens in later modules.

4. Retrieve the image
If the response contains a URL, add HTTP > Download a file and map that URL into the file URL field. Check how long the provider keeps that URL valid and whether it requires authorization; those details are provider-specific. If generation is asynchronous, add the provider’s documented status or polling request before downloading. Do not assume that a URL remains available after the scenario finishes.
If the generation module already returns a file, map its file name, MIME type, and binary data directly into the processing or destination module. Preserve the provider response in a log field so a failed upload can be diagnosed without regenerating the image.
5. Process with Image modules
Make’s Image tools support image format conversion, metadata extraction, and resizing. Add only the transformations your destination needs. For example, convert an overly large source to WebP, extract width and height for your record, or resize a thumbnail while keeping the original file for archival use. Specify the required dimensions and output format explicitly; a destination may reject an otherwise valid image because of its size or MIME type.
6. Save metadata and route the file
Map the processed file into the destination app’s upload module, then write a record containing at least the source ID, original prompt, generation response or job ID, final file name, MIME type, dimensions, and destination URL or ID. Separate a human-readable title from a filesystem-safe name. If several jobs can produce the same name, include the source ID or a timestamp to prevent overwrites.

Webhook ordering, queues, and repeat jobs
Instant webhook executions run in parallel by default. Parallelism improves throughput, but two requests can write the same filename or arrive at a destination out of order. In the scenario’s webhook settings, enable Process data in order when sequential completion matters. Make queues incoming webhook data; its documentation describes capacity of up to 667 items per 10,000 licensed monthly credits, with a maximum of 10,000 queue items. A full queue rejects additional requests. These are subscription-dependent operational limits, so verify the current help page for your account.
Webhook logs are retained for three days, or 30 days for Enterprise organizations, according to Make’s documentation. Export the identifiers and responses you need for longer troubleshooting. Add error handlers only after you understand how the provider and destination report failures; do not promise retries or guaranteed delivery unless your exact configuration implements and records them.
Security and reliability checklist
- Keep API keys in Make connections’ credential fields, never in mapped prompt text or a shared data store.
- Use HTTPS endpoints and reject unverified certificates rather than weakening transport security.
- Validate prompts and content IDs before sending them to an external provider.
- Record provider status, response body, and destination result for each job.
- Design idempotent names or lookup keys so a rerun does not create accidental duplicates.
- Handle expired image URLs, provider rate limits, malformed responses, and upload failures as separate error cases.
- Check provider and destination file-size, format, retention, and authentication rules before production use.
Troubleshooting common failures
The provider is missing from Make
Make cannot supply a module that the provider has not published. Confirm the current integration listing, then switch to HTTP and follow the provider’s API documentation. Do not substitute an image-analysis module for generation.
The HTTP request returns 401 or 403
Recreate the connection and put the API key, Basic Auth, or OAuth credentials in the HTTP module’s credential field. Check the provider’s required authorization scheme and account permissions.

The request succeeds but no image appears
Inspect the parsed response. You may have received a job ID rather than a finished image, or a URL nested under a provider-specific field. Add the documented status step or map the correct URL before adding Download a file.
Download a file fails
Test the URL while it is fresh, check whether it needs authorization, and verify that the provider has not expired or restricted it. If the response is binary data instead, bypass the download module and map the file directly.
The destination rejects the upload
Compare the file’s MIME type, dimensions, and size with the destination’s limits. Insert an Image conversion or resize module, and ensure the upload connection has permission to write to the target folder or record.
Images overwrite one another
Use a unique name based on the source record ID and configure ordered processing if arrival order matters. Parallel webhook execution is the default, so do not rely on timing to prevent collisions.

A webhook stops accepting requests
Check queue depth and subscription allowance. Make documents that a full webhook queue rejects new requests. Reduce burst size, process items in order only when necessary, and monitor usage before increasing traffic.
