You can automate Chrome without Selenium using Playwright, Puppeteer, or a client for Chrome’s DevTools Protocol (CDP). For most new end-to-end test suites, start with Playwright; for JavaScript projects that need a focused browser-control library, consider Puppeteer; use CDP directly when you need protocol-level control and are prepared to manage more setup yourself.

Choose the right Selenium alternative

The right option depends on whether you need a test framework, a browser-control library, or direct access to Chrome’s automation protocol. There is no documented basis here for saying one is universally faster or more reliable.

Need Start with Why
A complete end-to-end test suite, possibly across browsers Playwright Playwright Test includes a runner, assertions, isolation, parallelization, and tooling; it supports Chromium, Firefox, and WebKit. Playwright documentation.
A high-level browser-control library for a JavaScript project Puppeteer It provides a JavaScript API for Chrome-focused tasks and supports CDP and WebDriver BiDi. Puppeteer overview.
Custom browser tooling or protocol-level access A CDP client CDP exposes Chrome’s remote debugging protocol; a client gives you lower-level control but leaves more lifecycle and connection work to your application. Chrome headless and automation overview.
Testing a specific branded Google Chrome build Playwright with a supported Chrome channel, or a Puppeteer/Chrome setup Playwright distinguishes its supported Chromium build from branded Chrome channels. Playwright browser documentation.

Playwright’s browser automation APIs are available in JavaScript/TypeScript, Python, Java, and .NET, though the test-runner experience differs by language. Puppeteer is a JavaScript library, so it is a natural fit for Node.js applications. Raw CDP is appropriate when the protocol itself is important, rather than simply a convenient way to click, navigate, and test a page.

Automate Chrome with Playwright

For a small JavaScript example, install Playwright and its browser, then launch Chromium, navigate to a page, capture a screenshot, and close the browser. These steps use Node.js and the Playwright library; Playwright Test is an additional framework choice when you want a managed test runner.

  • A BETTER READING EXPERIENCE: For busy office workers, EasyRead mode provides a more paper-like experience for when viewing lengthy documents
  1. Create a project and install Playwright:
    mkdir chrome-automation && cd chrome-automation
    npm init -y
    npm install -D playwright
  2. Install the supported Chromium browser:
    npx playwright install chromium
  3. Save this as shot.js:
    const { chromium } = require('playwright');

    (async () => {
    const browser = await chromium.launch({ headless: true });
    try {
    const page = await browser.newPage({ viewport: { width: 1440, height: 900 } });
    await page.goto('https://example.com', { waitUntil: 'domcontentloaded' });
    console.log('Title:', await page.title());
    await page.screenshot({ path: 'shot.png', fullPage: true });
    } finally {
    await browser.close();
    }
    })();
  4. Run it:
    node shot.js
    On success, the terminal prints the page title and the working directory contains shot.png.

The browser is closed in a finally block so it is not left running if navigation or capture fails. For interaction, locate elements with Playwright’s locator APIs and use actions such as click() or fill(); prefer locators tied to accessible names or stable page attributes over brittle positional selectors. For test suites, use Playwright Test’s assertions and isolation rather than turning a one-off script into a home-grown test runner.

When to use branded Chrome instead of bundled Chromium

Playwright uses its own supported Chromium build by default. That build may be ahead of the current public Chrome release, which can be useful for checking upcoming browser changes. If the requirement is to reproduce the version users receive, or to match a Chrome-specific environment, select a documented branded channel such as chrome or chrome-beta in the launch options. Consult the browser configuration documentation for current channel setup and compatibility notes.

Do not assume an arbitrary Chrome executable is interchangeable with Playwright’s supported browser versions: compatibility with arbitrary executables is not guaranteed. Browser binaries are tied to Playwright releases, so after upgrading Playwright, rerun its browser installation command if needed. A controlled bundled build and a branded Chrome channel answer different testing needs; choose based on what you intend to validate.

When Puppeteer is the better fit

Puppeteer is a high-level JavaScript library for browser automation, including navigation, DOM interaction, typing and clicking, network interception, screenshots, PDFs, and UI testing. It supports both CDP and WebDriver BiDi; it is not CDP-only. See the Puppeteer overview and WebDriver BiDi guide.

Choose Puppeteer when your codebase is Node.js-focused and you want a browser-control API without bringing in a full multi-browser test framework. Its default setup downloads a compatible Chrome for Testing binary. If installation does not provide that browser, check the current installation guidance: package-manager settings that block install scripts can interfere with the download.

When to connect to Chrome through CDP directly

The Chrome DevTools Protocol is a low-level interface for instrumenting, inspecting, debugging, and profiling Chromium-based browsers. A CDP client can send protocol commands to a Chrome instance without Selenium, but your application must take responsibility for launching Chrome, establishing the debugging connection, and issuing lower-level commands.

Chrome’s documentation describes chrome-remote-interface as a lower-level option than Puppeteer and notes that it does not launch Chrome for you. That makes direct CDP useful for specialized tooling or protocol-focused debugging, but more work for routine navigation and form workflows. Chrome automation overview and chrome-remote-interface.

Headless Chrome is a mode, not an automation library

Headless describes running Chrome without a visible browser window; it does not by itself provide the high-level workflow API to navigate, interact with controls, or assert test results. Pair it with a controller such as Playwright or Puppeteer. Chrome’s current overview describes modern Headless mode as using the same browser implementation as headful Chrome. Chrome Headless documentation.

Handle setup, reliability, and common failures

Playwright cannot find its browser

Likely cause: the supported browser binary was not installed, or Playwright was updated without refreshing its browser installation.

Fix: run npx playwright install chromium for the project’s installed Playwright version. Keep the package and browser installation aligned when updating dependencies.

The script works with Chromium but not installed Chrome

Likely cause: the test relies on behavior or version details that differ between Playwright’s bundled Chromium and branded Chrome, or it uses an unsupported arbitrary executable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix: decide whether the test targets Playwright’s supported Chromium or a branded channel, then use the documented configuration. Avoid assuming any local Chrome binary is guaranteed to work with any Playwright release.

Puppeteer installs but Chrome is missing

Likely cause: an install-script restriction prevented Puppeteer from downloading Chrome for Testing.

Fix: review the package manager’s install-script policy and Puppeteer’s current installation documentation before changing the environment. Puppeteer installation.

CDP client cannot connect

Likely cause: Chrome was not started with a remote debugging endpoint, the client is pointed at the wrong endpoint, or the browser process has already exited.

Fix: manage Chrome startup and shutdown explicitly, confirm the debugging connection details exposed by your chosen client, and handle connection failures rather than assuming the browser is alive. Direct CDP does not remove the need to manage the browser lifecycle.

Navigation finishes before the page is ready

Likely cause: navigation completion is being treated as proof that all application data or late-loading content is ready.

Fix: wait for a meaningful page condition, such as a locator appearing, before interacting or capturing. Avoid relying on an arbitrary fixed delay when a specific readiness signal is available.

Performance, repeatability, and cost considerations

The source material does not establish comparative speed, reliability rankings, or a cost benchmark among Playwright, Puppeteer, and CDP clients. Your operational cost depends on the browser environment, CI or hosting resources, and how much test infrastructure you maintain—not on a documented universal winner among these tools.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • For repeatable tests: pin your automation dependency and install the browser version it supports. Use bundled Chromium when you want a controlled supported build.
  • For Chrome-specific behavior: use a branded Chrome channel where supported and document which channel the test environment uses.
  • For test-suite scale: Playwright Test provides runner, isolation, and parallelization features, but concurrency still requires suitable machine resources.
  • For low-level customization: CDP can expose the protocol surface directly, but browser lifecycle and connection management become your responsibility.
  • For execution mode: headless can run without a visible window; use headed execution when visual inspection of a failure is useful.

Or skip the browser setup

If your task is to produce a website screenshot or PDF rather than test a browser workflow, ScreenshotNeo can capture a URL with one GET request. Its service removes cookie/consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; those cleanup steps can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies page verdict and billing status in headers.

Frequently asked questions

Does Chrome automation without Selenium mean avoiding WebDriver entirely?

No. Playwright and direct CDP are alternatives to Selenium, while Puppeteer supports both CDP and WebDriver BiDi. If your requirement is to avoid WebDriver-based tooling specifically, choose based on the protocol and library you intend to use.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I use these approaches for browsers other than Chrome?

Playwright supports Chromium, Firefox, and WebKit. Puppeteer’s documented focus is Chrome and Firefox; the exact browser and protocol combination depends on its current support. CDP applies to Chromium-based browsers, not a general cross-browser protocol.

Is ChromeDriver the same thing as Selenium?

No. ChromeDriver is a bridge used by WebDriver-based frameworks and implements WebDriver and WebDriver BiDi. It belongs to the Chrome automation ecosystem, but choosing ChromeDriver as the core path does not satisfy a goal of avoiding WebDriver-based tooling.
