To appear offline to Steam friends while keeping chat and Steam Community features, set your status to Invisible. Open Friends & Chat, click your avatar or current status, then choose Invisible from the status menu. Steam says friends will see you as offline, but you can still view your friends list, send and receive messages, and use the Community. Steam’s status guide explains the difference between this and disconnecting.
How to appear invisible on Steam
- Open the Steam desktop client and open Friends & Chat.
- In the Friends & Chat window, click your avatar or current status near the top.
- Choose Invisible from the status dropdown.
The exact placement can vary with Steam’s client layout, but the Friends & Chat status menu is the documented route. This changes your Steam presence; it does not disconnect the client from Steam.
Invisible, Offline, and Offline Mode: what is the difference?

Steam distinguishes the Offline presence setting from its separate Offline Mode. With Invisible, you remain connected and retain chat and Community access. With Offline, you appear offline but lose friend communication and access to features that require a connection. Steam’s Friends & Chat FAQ describes these status options.
Can you appear offline while playing a game?
Invisible is the relevant choice if you want to play while appearing offline to Steam friends. It changes your Steam presence, not necessarily every way your activity might be displayed. A game may have its own friends list, party or matchmaking status, or connect to an external publisher account. Console profiles and third-party chat or streaming services can also show separate presence. Steam does not promise that Invisible conceals activity across those systems.

Invisible should also not be treated as a profile-privacy setting. The status changes how Steam presents your online presence; it is not documented as changing game-details visibility, achievements, playtime, or activity-feed settings. Review those separately if you want to limit profile information.
When to use Offline Mode instead
Choose Steam > Go Offline… when you need to use Steam without an active Steam Network connection, rather than simply hiding your presence. This is a connectivity mode, not a stronger version of the Invisible status.

Steam’s Offline Mode instructions recommend preparing while online: save your login credentials, update the games you want to play, and launch each game once while connected before selecting Steam > Go Offline…. Games that require an active connection or an external launcher may not work. While disconnected, online Steam features and updates will not be available.
Invisible or Do Not Disturb?
Use Invisible if your priority is not to appear online. Use Do Not Disturb if you are happy to remain visible but do not want notifications for chat, invitations, and other requests. Steam describes Do Not Disturb as a notification control, not an offline status. If you want to disconnect from the Community, choose Offline instead.
What if Steam still shows you as online?
- Set the status again in the active client. Open Friends & Chat and choose Invisible from the status menu.
- Check other Steam sessions. If you are signed in to Friends & Chat in a browser or on another device, close that separate session or check the status there too. Steam Friends & Chat is available through the client and a web browser.
- Restart Steam if the display looks stale. Then allow the presence indicator time to update before checking again.
- Consider where the activity is appearing. If a game, external launcher, cross-platform account, or voice service says you are online, that may be its own presence system rather than Steam’s Friends & Chat status.
Do not confuse the Offline option in Friends & Chat with Steam > Go Offline…. The former is a presence choice; the latter disconnects Steam Network. Steam’s documentation describes the normal behavior of Invisible as appearing offline to other players; unsupported claims about other behavior should not be taken as established fact.
Steam mobile and Steam Deck
Menu labels and availability can vary between the desktop client, browser, mobile apps, and Steam Deck modes. Steam’s status documentation describes the Friends & Chat selector but does not provide a definitive current, device-specific path for every mobile app or Steam Deck interface. Look for the profile or status dropdown in Friends & Chat. If it is not available in Steam Deck Gaming Mode, try Desktop Mode or browser-based Friends & Chat; do not assume the controls are identical across versions.

How to return to normal
Open the same Friends & Chat status menu and select Online. Choose Away to signal temporary unavailability, or Do Not Disturb if you want to remain online without notifications.
