The reliable workflow is: choose the smallest capture scope that contains the evidence, open the result in FireShot’s editor, add annotations that explain one thing at a time, check for private information, and export in the format your audience needs.
Choose the right capture before annotating
Annotation is most useful when the screenshot already frames the relevant evidence. FireShot describes three capture scopes:
- Full page: captures the complete, scrollable webpage, including content below the fold. Use it for documenting a long article, checkout flow, or complete layout.
- Visible area: captures only what is currently displayed in the browser viewport. This is usually clearest for a single error message, button, or form state.
- Selected region: captures a portion you define. Choose it when surrounding content would distract the recipient or expose unrelated information.
Before capturing, scroll to the state you want to document. Expand accordions, open the relevant menu, and wait for images or messages to finish loading. A full-page image is not a substitute for reproducing an interaction: if a problem appears only after a click, capture the page after that click and annotate the resulting state.
Full-page capture
Use this when context matters or when a reviewer needs to see the position of an element in a long document. Check the resulting image for sticky headers, repeated navigation, lazy-loaded images, and sections that may have changed while the page was stitched together.
Visible-area capture
This is the fastest choice for a compact explanation. It avoids making the recipient search through a tall image, but it can omit the page title, URL, or surrounding controls that establish context.

Selection capture
A selection is appropriate for a tightly bounded component such as a pricing card or a form field. Include enough neighboring content to identify what the selected region belongs to.
Open the capture in FireShot’s editor
After FireShot captures the page, open the image in its editor. FireShot’s documented editing controls include shape, drawing, pointer, text, and image controls. The exact buttons and availability depend on the browser extension and edition installed, so verify the controls shown in your own editor rather than relying on a menu label from another version.
- Capture the full page, visible area, or selected region.
- Open the resulting image in FireShot’s editor.
- Choose an annotation object: an arrow or pointer for direction, a shape for an outline, or text for an explanation.
- Place the object beside the evidence, keeping the original text readable.
- Review the entire image, then crop, resize, highlight, blur, or erase as needed.
- Save, copy, export, or share the finished result.
Use annotations that answer a specific question
Arrows and pointers: show where to look
Use one arrow to connect a short instruction to the exact control, label, or error. Keep the arrowhead outside the text when possible. Several crossing arrows make a screenshot harder to read; number them and explain the numbers in a short text note if multiple locations must be discussed.
Shapes: outline a boundary
A rectangle or other shape is useful for identifying a whole card, field, or region without covering its contents. Leave a small margin around the target so the outline does not obscure a border, icon, or validation message.

Text: add the missing context
Text annotations should explain what the recipient should notice or what action produced the state. Prefer short notes such as “Error appears after selecting Canada” over a paragraph that repeats the page. Use a contrasting color and a size that remains legible after export.
Highlight, blur, and erase
FireShot lists highlighting, blur, and erase among its editing actions. Highlighting can emphasize a phrase while retaining the underlying text. Blur can obscure an email address, customer name, token, or other visible detail. Treat blur as visual concealment, not forensic redaction: do not assume that it guarantees removal of underlying source data. If sensitive information must never leave your system, capture a safer state or remove the information before sharing.
Crop and resize
Crop away irrelevant browser content after you have preserved any context the recipient needs. Resize only after annotations are positioned, or check the result carefully because small text and thin arrows may become unreadable.
Make the marked screenshot easy to review
- One purpose per image: create separate captures for unrelated bugs or design comments.
- Preserve context: include a page heading, field label, or nearby navigation when it helps identify the target.
- Use consistent colors: for example, one color for the problem and another for the expected location.
- Keep notes factual: state what is visible and, when known, the action that led to it.
- Check legibility at delivery size: a large editor canvas may be reduced in email, issue trackers, or chat.
- Remove secrets: inspect the URL bar, query string, account names, access tokens, personal data, and visible notifications before exporting.
Save or share in the format that fits the job
FireShot’s official feature descriptions list PDF, PNG, GIF, JPEG, and BMP output, as well as clipboard, email, upload, OneNote, and other export routes. Availability can vary by browser and installed edition. Use an image format for issue comments and chat, where inline viewing matters. Use PDF when a long page must remain a document or when the recipient needs a printable record. PNG generally preserves interface text sharply; JPEG can produce smaller files but may introduce compression around small type.

Before sending, open the exported file independently and verify that every annotation is present, text is not clipped, and the selected output did not flatten the image in an unexpected way. Sharing through email, an upload destination, or a note-taking service creates a separate copy outside the local capture process; check that destination’s access controls.
Edition, browser, and privacy limits
FireShot’s browser listings do not describe one identical feature set everywhere. The Chrome Web Store separates basic capture from editing capabilities described with an available upgrade, including text and arrow annotations, blur, and other effects. The Firefox listing describes crop, arrows, text, and export for the extension it lists. Confirm the current marketplace listing and the edition installed before planning a workflow around a particular editing control.
FireShot’s own product material says captures are local and that the tool can work offline; the Chrome listing likewise says screenshots are stored locally. These statements concern capture and storage behavior described by the vendor and listing. They do not mean that a screenshot remains local after you email it, upload it, copy it to a service, or share it through another destination.

Troubleshooting annotated screenshots
The annotation control is missing
Your edition may provide capture without the editing upgrade, or your browser listing may expose a different set of controls. Check the installed extension’s version and marketplace description. If editing is unavailable, save the capture and use an image editor that meets your organization’s privacy requirements.
The full page is incomplete
Confirm that the page finished loading before capture. Content that appears only after scrolling, a login wall, an infinite list, or a page that changes while it is captured can produce an incomplete result. Capture the relevant visible state separately when a full-page result cannot represent it reliably.
Text or arrows are unreadable after export
Return to the editor, enlarge the annotation, increase contrast, or crop away unnecessary space. Avoid resizing until the final dimensions are known, and inspect the exported file rather than only the editor preview.
Private information is visible
Do not rely solely on a blur effect for high-risk secrets. Recapture without the secret, remove it before capture, or apply an approved redaction workflow. Then inspect the complete exported image, including the URL and notification areas.

FAQ
Can I annotate a screenshot of only one element?
Yes. Capture a selected region around the element, then use a shape, arrow, or text note in the editor. Leave enough surrounding context for the recipient to identify the element.
Does a local capture stay private after I share it?
No. Local capture and storage claims do not control what happens after you copy, email, upload, or export the image to another service. Review the destination’s permissions separately.
Should I send PNG, JPEG, or PDF?
Choose PNG for sharp interface text, JPEG when a smaller compressed image is acceptable, and PDF when the result should behave like a printable or multi-page document. Confirm that your installed FireShot edition and browser offer the required format.
