WordPress already lets users sign in with the email address associated with their account. They can enter that email and their existing password in the usual login form; there is no core setting or plugin to enable.
Log in with an email address
- Open the site’s usual WordPress login page.
- In the username-or-email field, enter the email address associated with the account.
- Enter the account’s existing password and submit the form.
This uses the email address as a login identifier. It does not change the account’s username, and the user does not need a different password.

If email login does not work
- Check that the email address belongs to the intended account and that you are on the correct site.
- Confirm the password or use the site’s password-reset option if it is not known.
- If the login page redirects unexpectedly or behaves inconsistently, follow the official WordPress login troubleshooting guidance, including its advice on cookies and redirects.
- If the standard form appears to reject an otherwise valid login, check whether a plugin or theme changes the login flow.
When a plugin is relevant
A plugin is not needed for ordinary email login. Consider one only if the site needs a custom login or registration form, redirects, or other account-flow features. The official Clean Login plugin listing documents a plugin-specific “Use Email as Username” option alongside additional login and registration features. That option is not a WordPress core switch; check the listing for current maintenance, compatibility, and feature details before installing it.

WordPress accounts have a username, password, and email address; each account also has a role that determines its capabilities. When creating or managing accounts, assign only the role needed for the person’s work. Email login changes how a user identifies an account at sign-in; it does not grant additional permissions.
